Sweet and sour is a generic term that encompasses many styles of sauce, cuisine and cooking methods. It is commonly used in China, but has been used in England since the Middle Ages and remains popular in Europe and America.
Some authors say that the original sweet and sour sauce (simplified Chinese: 糖醋酱; traditional Chinese: 糖醋醬; pinyin: tángcùjiàng; Jyutping: tong4 cou3 zoeng3) came from the Chinese province of Hunan, but the sauce in this area is a weak vinegar and sugar mixture not resembling what most people, including the Chinese, would call sweet and sour. Many places in China use a sweet and sour sauce as a dipping sauce for fish and meat, rather than in cooking as is commonly found in westernized Chinese cuisine.
This style of using sauces is popular amongst Chinese who tie certain sauces to particular meats such as chili and soy for shrimp and vinegar and garlic for goose. There are, however, some dishes, such as the Cantonese sweet and sour pork or Loong har kow (sweet and sour lobster balls), in which the meat is cooked and a sauce added to the wok before serving.

Sweet and Sour
Sweet one I don’t understand
When was it that we got this way
And it happened quickly
We had nothing left to say
Our romance gone sour
Long before the final hour
Don’t ask why (you never did before)
How am I supposed to know (just face it)
Let’s just say goodbye
Let’s just let it go
Sweet one now so far away
Already with some other man
And it happened quickly
As if to show me that you can
Life on the road won’t change
But life at home is not the same
Don’t ask why (you never trusted me)
How am I supposed to know (I never trusted you)
Hard to say goodbye
Hard to to let it go
Sweet and Sour
Sweet and Sour
Sweet and Sour
Sweet and Sour
Honey we had something special
Funny how we let it slip away
All the sweet love I rememeber
Seems to taste so bittersweet today
And it took a long time
For the damage to accumulate
And it’s such a thin line
Lyin’ in between our love and hate
Sweet and Sour
