Resident Evil is a 2002 horror film written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, and James Purefoy. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil.
Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-Virus at a secret underground facility. The film received many negative reviews from critics but was commercially successful, grossing more than $102 million worldwide.
In Raccoon City, there is a top-secret genetic research facility station manufactured and controlled by the Umbrella Corporation, called The Hive. One day, in The Hive, a thief steals and in an effort to cover their tracks, throws a vial of the T-Virus, a genetically constructed mutating virus, into a lab, causing the vial to break and the virus to spread around the lab and into the air vents. The escape of the virus causes the facility's artificial intelligence, the Red Queen, to seal the Hive and kill everyone inside using the facility's automated systems.
