“I always wanted a V8, manual, rear-drive—and then there was Smokey and the Bandit,” says Gregg Hamilton, “When I moved here to America, [I realized] this is the only place in the world where I can really own one.”
Wanting something that’s American, New Zealander Hamilton settled on this Pontiac Trans Am—that is definitely not like any other. Using tricks learned from years of working with some of the best World Rally Championship teams in the world—including Toyota Team Europe and Prodrive—Hamilton’s Firebird has been given handling to match its extensive engine modifications.
“I needed something to do, so we found this car on eBay, and flew to Alabama, picked it up at the airport sight unseen…[and] it sort of just evolved into what it is today.”
From its wider bodywork, to custom engine computer, to fully revised suspension and brakes, it’s “about as quick as a Z06 Corvette,” he says. Sound far-fetched? As someone whose day job is spent building and testing Ken Block’s latest projects, we’d believe him.
“I like the mechanical-ness of it. I like the engine bay…I like that you can see the injectors, and plug for ECU…There’s no wheel arches in there, so you can see the uprights and the roll bar,” says Hamilton.
“It’s not always about the drive for me. It’s about the build of it. It’s about tinkering with it…”

I thought you might like to see the progress Jordan has made on his third gen Trans Am so far. He says he still has a long way to go, but it's getting there. If any of you are new to our channel, this video should get you up to speed on the Trans Am project. As you can see in the video, Jordan is currently on engine number three and probably the fourth version of the exhaust. One thing that is undeniable, is that the performance has increased substantially with each engine swap. As he continues to get the setup fine-tuned, the car will only get faster. We still need to show you all a video of the car running on the bottle and that should be coming soon. I hope you find this interesting, we appreciate you watching!

Burton Milo "Burt" Reynolds, Jr. (born February 11, 1936) is an American actor, director and voice artist. Some of his memorable roles include Bo 'Bandit' Darville in Smokey and the Bandit, Lewis Medlock in Deliverance, Bobby "Gator" McCluskey in White Lightning and sequel Gator, Paul Crewe and Coach Nate Scarborough in The Longest Yard and its 2005 remake respectively, Billy Clyde Puckett in Semi-Tough, J.J. McClure in The Cannonball Run, the voice of Charlie B. Barkin in All Dogs Go to Heaven, and Jack Horner in Boogie Nights.
Reynolds' parents were Burton Milo Reynolds, Sr. (1906–2002), who had Cherokee and Irish ancestry, and his wife, Fern H. (née Miller). Reynolds was born in Lansing, Michigan. He states in his autobiography that his family was living in Lansing, Michigan, when his father was drafted into the United States Army. Reynolds, his mother and his sister joined his father at Fort Leonard Wood, where they lived for two years. When Reynolds's father was sent to Europe, the family returned to Lansing. In 1946, Reynolds moved to Riviera Beach, Florida, with his parents. His father, Burt Sr., later became Chief of Police of Riviera Beach. Riviera Beach is the next town north of West Palm Beach.

I thought you might like to see the progress Jordan has made on his third gen Trans Am so far. He says he still has a long way to go, but it's getting there. If any of you are new to our channel, this video should get you up to speed on the Trans Am project. As you can see in the video, Jordan is currently on engine number three and probably the fourth version of the exhaust. Our 2nd Super Bandit Stage shown in this video was sold but our 3rd Super Bandit has been completed. Our 3rd Super Bandit Stage 2 also has the hand built dyno tuned 468 stroker with cold air induction but with improvements such as a camshaft upgrade to a Comp Cam .520/.540 roller, taller Ferrea valves to match the cam and the carb modified to a 850 cfm Q Jet for increased hp/tq. A similar Butler built engine has 500 hp and 550 tq on their engine dyno. The front and rear bumper covers are upgraded to the new fiberglass type. “I always wanted a V8, manual, rear-drive—and then there was Smokey and the Bandit,” says Gregg Hamilton, “When I moved here to America, [I realized] this is the only place in the world where I can really own one.”
Wanting something that’s American, New Zealander Hamilton settled on this Pontiac Trans Am—that is definitely not like any other. Using tricks learned from years of working with some of the best World Rally Championship teams in the world—including Toyota Team Europe and Prodrive—Hamilton’s Firebird has been given handling to match its extensive engine modifications.
“I needed something to do, so we found this car on eBay, and flew to Alabama, picked it up at the airport sight unseen…[and] it sort of just evolved into what it is today.”
From its wider bodywork, to custom engine computer, to fully revised suspension and brakes, it’s “about as quick as a Z06 Corvette,” he says. Sound far-fetched? As someone whose day job is spent building and testing Ken Block’s latest projects, we’d believe him.
“I like the mechanical-ness of it. I like the engine bay…I like that you can see the injectors, and plug for ECU…There’s no wheel arches in there, so you can see the uprights and the roll bar,” says Hamilton.
“It’s not always about the drive for me. It’s about the build of it. It’s about tinkering with it…”

I thought you might like to see the progress Jordan has made on his third gen Trans Am so far. He says he still has a long way to go, but it's getting there. If any of you are new to our channel, this video should get you up to speed on the Trans Am project. As you can see in the video, Jordan is currently on engine number three and probably the fourth version of the exhaust. One thing that is undeniable, is that the performance has increased substantially with each engine swap. As he continues to get the setup fine-tuned, the car will only get faster. We still need to show you all a video of the car running on the bottle and that should be coming soon. I hope you find this interesting, we appreciate you watching!

The SD-455 was a remarkable engine, a legit race-bred machine among the plummeting compression ratios and horsepower levels of other V8s of the day. This is a great example of a low-mile and correct 1974 SD-455 Trans Am from the Brothers Collection.

Our 3rd Super Bandit Stage 2 also has the hand built dyno tuned 468 stroker with cold air induction but with improvements such as a camshaft upgrade to a Comp Cam .520/.540 roller, taller Ferrea valves to match the cam and the carb modified to a 850 cfm Q Jet for increased hp/tq. A similar Butler built engine has 500 hp and 550 tq on their engine dyno. The front and rear bumper covers are upgraded to the new fiberglass type. The paint is base/clear with all of the decals under 3 coats of clear. Top coat of clear was wet sanded and buffed for that glass smooth shine! Other standard items include a rebuilt 4 speed Borg Warner ST10 manual trans, 3.42 posi rear, brake system was converted to the factory 1979 type 4 wheel disc brakes with upgraded drilled/slotted rotors and ceramic brake pads, Year One 17" snowflake wheels, upgraded instrumentation which includes 8k tachometer and 160 speedometer, upgraded AC system and gold Y 88 T tops. The black and gold SE look is present on the outside and inside. Bottom side of floors cleaned and painted in red primer. All new brake/fuel lines and gas tank. In this episode of Generation Gap the guys compare Firebirds: old vs. new. Davin brought a classic 1968 Pontiac Firebird equipped with a 350-CID V-8 boasting 320 hp. Matt, on the other hand, had a bit of a trick up his sleeve bringing a 2010 Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Trans Am Chevrolet Camaro modified to the nines to look and perform like a modern Firebird. Its 455 CID and 655 hp are some impressive numbers, but how will it be on the road?

In 1969, prior to mass production of the car, two prototypes were created by legendary automotive designer Gene Winfield. Those two prototypes were lost to history shortly after their creation, but some 40 years later, the second and sole remaining prototype was re-discovered by car collector Curt Richards.
The Trans Am Story takes you on the journey from the cars conception in the late 1960's, to its ownership by road racing champion Jerry Titus, to its current day restoration and unveiling. With interviews from Gene Winfield, Rick Titus, and more...
