In this lecture, we begin to study one of Soren Kierkegaard's most important works: Fear and Trembling. This lecture provides an overview of the text as a whole, and then examines all of the sections, except for the three problemata at the center of the book (covered in the second lecture). We discuss in particular the relationship between faith, religion, theology, reason, philosophy -- and lived experience. We also focus on Kierkegaard's treatment of Abraham and how he transcends the category of the Tragic Hero.

This lecture was delivered in 2006 by Professor Hubert Dreyfus of Berkeley University in California. I consider it a good introduction to where Kierkegaard is coming from. Dreyfus thinks the church, through St Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas introduced Greek concepts into Christianity. He traces this development through various philosophers to the time of Soren Kierkegaard as a way to introduce his 1843 book Fear and Trembling. Here is a quote from the beginning of Kierkegaard's book.
"Preface: Every speculative monitor who conscientiously signals the important trends in modern philosophy, every assistant professor, tutor, and student, every rural outsider and tenant incumbent in philosophy is unwilling to stop with doubting everything but goes further. Perhaps it would be premature and untimely to ask them where they really are going, but in all politeness and modesty it can probably be taken for granted that they have doubted everything, since otherwise it certainly would be odd to speak of their having gone further. They have all made this preliminary movement and presumably so easily that they find it unnecessary to say a word about how, for not even the person who in apprehension and concern sought a little enlightenment found any, not one suggestive hint or one little dietetic prescription with respect to how a person is to act in carrying out this enormous task. "But did not Descartes do it?" Descartes, a venerable, humble, honest thinker, whose writings no one can read without being profoundly affected-he did what he said and said what he did. Alas! Alas! Søren Aabye Kierkegaard (/ˈsɔrən ˈkɪərkəɡɑrd/ or /ˈkɪərkəɡɔr/; Danish: [ˈsɶːɐn ˈkiɐ̯ɡəɡɒːˀ] (
listen)) (5 May 1813 – 11 November 1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian and religious author. He was a critic of idealist intellectuals and philosophers of his time, such as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel. He was also critical of the state and practice of Christianity, primarily that of the Church of Denmark. He is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher.
Much of his philosophical work deals with the issues of how one lives as a "single individual", giving priority to concrete human reality over abstract thinking, and highlighting the importance of personal choice and commitment.
His theological work focuses on Christian ethics, on the institution of the Church, and on the differences between purely objective proofs of Christianity. He wrote of the individual's subjective relationship to Jesus Christ, the God-Man, which came through faith. Much of his work deals with the art of Christian love.

This lecture was delivered in 2006 by Professor Hubert Dreyfus of Berkeley University in California. I consider it a good introduction to where Kierkegaard is coming from. Dreyfus thinks the church, through St Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas introduced Greek concepts into Christianity. Der dänische Theologe und religiöse Schriftsteller Sören Kierkegaard gilt als früher Wegbereiter der Existenzphilosophie. Er lebte von 1813 bis 1855. Sein Denken war geprägt von der Maxime, dass die Wahrheit nicht in Sätzen gelehrt werden könne, sondern eine Bewegung des Menschen in der Zeit sei. In seinem Essay "Ich tanze nicht" versucht Peter Bürger, sich dem Denken von Kierkegaard zu nähern. Der Autor lehrte an der Universität Bremen Literaturwissenschaften. This lecture was delivered in 2006 by Professor Hubert Dreyfus of Berkeley University in California. I consider it a good introduction to where Kierkegaard is coming from. Dreyfus thinks the church, through St Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas introduced Greek concepts into Christianity. He traces this development through various philosophers to the time of Soren Kierkegaard as a way to introduce his 1843 book Fear and Trembling. Here is a quote from the beginning of Kierkegaard's book.
"Preface: Every speculative monitor who conscientiously signals the important trends in modern philosophy, every assistant professor, tutor, and student, every rural outsider and tenant incumbent in philosophy is unwilling to stop with doubting everything but goes further. Perhaps it would be premature and untimely to ask them where they really are going, but in all politeness and modesty it can probably be taken for granted that they have doubted everything, since otherwise it certainly would be odd to speak of their having gone further. They have all made this preliminary movement and presumably so easily that they find it unnecessary to say a word about how, for not even the person who in apprehension and concern sought a little enlightenment found any, not one suggestive hint or one little dietetic prescription with respect to how a person is to act in carrying out this enormous task. "But did not Descartes do it?" Descartes, a venerable, humble, honest thinker, whose writings no one can read without being profoundly affected-he did what he said and said what he did. Alas! Alas! Alas! That is a great rarity in our day! As Descartes himself so frequently said, he did not doubt with respect to faith." Soren Kierkegaard, Fear and Trembling, Hong p. 5

His peculiar authorship comprises a baffling array of different narrative points of view and disciplinary subject matter, including aesthetic novels, works of psychology and Christian dogmatics, satirical prefaces, philosophical "scraps" and "postscripts," literary reviews, edifying discourses, Christian polemics, and retrospective self-interpretations. His arsenal of rhetoric includes irony, satire, parody, humor, polemic and a dialectical method of "indirect communication" -- all designed to deepen the reader's subjective passionate engagement with ultimate existential issues. Like his role models Socrates and Christ, Kierkegaard takes how one lives one's life to be the prime criterion of being in the truth. Kierkegaard's closest literary and philosophical models are Plato, J.G. Hamann, G.E. Lessing, and his teacher of philosophy at the University of Copenhagen Poul Martin Møller, although Goethe, the German Romantics, Hegel, Kant and the logic of Adolf Trendelenburg are also important influences. His prime theological influence is Martin Luther, although his reactions to his Danish contemporaries N.F.S. Grundtvig and H.L. Martensen are also crucial. In addition to being dubbed "the father of existentialism," Kierkegaard is best known as a trenchant critic of Hegel and Hegelianism and for his invention or elaboration of a host of philosophical, psychological, literary and theological categories, including: anxiety, despair, melancholy, repetition, inwardness, irony, existential stages, inherited sin, teleological suspension of the ethical, Christian paradox, the absurd, reduplication, universal/exception, sacrifice, love as a duty, seduction, the demonic, and indirect communication.

Søren Kierkegaard is an outsider in the history of philosophy. His peculiar authorship comprises a baffling array of different narrative points of view and disciplinary subject matter, including aesthetic novels, works of psychology and Christian dogmatics, satirical prefaces, philosophical "scraps" and "postscripts," literary reviews, edifying discourses, Christian polemics, and retrospective self-interpretations. His arsenal of rhetoric includes irony, satire, parody, humor, polemic and a dialectical method of "indirect communication" -- all designed to deepen the reader's subjective passionate engagement with ultimate existential issues. Like his role models Socrates and Christ, Kierkegaard takes how one lives one's life to be the prime criterion of being in the truth. Kierkegaard's closest literary and philosophical models are Plato, J.G. Hamann, G.E. Lessing, and his teacher of philosophy at the University of Copenhagen Poul Martin Møller, although Goethe, the German Romantics, Hegel, Kant and the logic of Adolf Trendelenburg are also important influences. His prime theological influence is Martin Luther, although his reactions to his Danish contemporaries N.F.S. Grundtvig and H.L. Martensen are also crucial. In addition to being dubbed "the father of existentialism," Kierkegaard is best known as a trenchant critic of Hegel and Hegelianism and for his invention or elaboration of a host of philosophical, psychological, literary and theological categories, including: anxiety, despair, melancholy, repetition, inwardness, irony, existential stages, inherited sin, teleological suspension of the ethical, Christian paradox, the absurd, reduplication, universal/exception, sacrifice, love as a duty, seduction, the demonic, and indirect communication.

In seinem Essay "Ich tanze nicht" versucht Peter Bürger, sich dem Denken von Kierkegaard zu nähern. Der Autor lehrte an der Universität Bremen Literaturwissenschaften. Sein Hauptwerk über die "Theorie der Avantgarde" wurde in fast alle Sprachen übersetzt.

Kierkegaard: Christian Philosopher - Dr. R.C. Sproul
Danish philosopher and author Søren Kierkegaard was born on May 5, 1813 in Copenhagen. He was the youngest child of seven, born to parents of Jutlandish descent. He sometimes called himself a child of old age because his mother was 45 and his father 56 when he was born. Kierkegaard was influenced early in life by the devoutly religious teachings of his father which concentrated on Christ's suffering. In 1830 Kierkegaard went to study theology, philosophy and literature at the University of Copenhagen. Kierkegaard's final years were taken up with a sustained, outright attack on the Church of Denmark. His lectures are available in audio at Archive.org Kierkegaard had to resign himself to giving up his love for Regine, his fiance, because he felt a "calling" to serve God. He cared so much for Regine that he tried to get her to be resigned to giving up her plan to marry Kierkegaard. Danish philosopher and author Søren Kierkegaard was born on May 5, 1813 in Copenhagen. He was the youngest child of seven, born to parents of Jutlandish descent. He sometimes called himself a child of old age because his mother was 45 and his father 56 when he was born. Kierkegaard was influenced early in life by the devoutly religious teachings of his father which concentrated on Christ's suffering. In 1830 Kierkegaard went to study theology, philosophy and literature at the University of Copenhagen.
Kierkegaard's final years were taken up with a sustained, outright attack on the Church of Denmark. He hoped to anger his contemporary Christians enough to inspire in them a stronger relationship to their faith. In 1850 he published Practice in Christianity, under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus. He felt this to be his most important book, and saw it as a reintroduction of Christianity. He felt that the removal of the offense of Christianity by the state church of Denmark made light of the message of Christianity. He also wrote articles for a journal called The Fatherland criticizing the state Lutheran church for claiming that all people born in Denmark are automatically Christian. These articles are compiled under the title Attack Upon "Christendom," While he was writing these articles , Kierkegaard was stricken with a spinal disease. He died within a month of his diagnosis on November 11, 1855.

SEDUCER'S DIARY
Based on the famous novel by Søren Kierkegaard about a Scandinavian-style Don Juan.
Johannes (30) - or Jo, as he calls himself - lives a secret double life. In the daytime he works as a locksmith. In the nighttime he locks himself into the homes of his costumers while they're away and "borrows" their identity for an evening. He never steals anything and always cleans up after himself making sure that the residents never discover anything. But his "guests", they experience a little adventure.
Jo's "guests" are the women that he invites for dinner as he plays the role of the resident of the different homes. Little by little his charming skills has improved to a level where the women never find out who he is in reality – especially ensured by the first and most important of his "safety rules"; To never see the same guest twice. Jo calls it "crashing" and it has become a deep addiction to him.
One day Jo is discovered by Cordelia (17), who lives in a villa that he is crashing. Without him knowing it, Cordelia has witnessed one of Jo’s seductions playing the role of her stepfather, who is out of town for a few days. But instead of calling the police, Cordelia has filmed Jo and now uses her recording as blackmail. She's deeply fascinated by his strange project and sees it as a way out of her spoiled boredom - she wants to join him on his next crash!
This sets off a journey into a dangerous game of identity, sexuality and deceit, which gradually uncovers the dark secrets behind Jo and Cordelia's escape from their everyday lives. A journey where they at last - in surrendering to the love that grows between them - finds out who they really are, behind the roles they play.
”Seducer's Diary” is a love drama with thriller elements. The references are films like "The Talented Mr. Ripley", "Sex, Lies and Videotape" and "Shame". The story is a modern adaptation of the world famous classic by Søren Kierkegaard (1843) with Berlinale Silver Bear Winner Mikkel Boe Følsgaard confirmed as the male lead Jo (”A Royal Affair”, ”Land of Mine”) and upcoming actress Frederikke Dahl Hansen as Cordelia (”You & Me Forever”, ”Copenhagen”). The film is written and directed by Student Oscar-winning Laurits Munch-Petersen ("Shadow of a Hero", "Ambulance", "Between Us") and produced by Morten Kjems Hytten Juhl (Sundance-winner 2012 "Teddy Bear", "Ækte Vare") and Astrid Kjems Hytten ("Rosa Morena").

UC Berkeley professor Hubert Dreyfus discussing Soren Kierkegaard's The Sickness Unto Death (TSUD), taken from an undergraduate class on Existentialism in Literature and Film.
