The name Hans Hofmann is synonymous with the style of painting known as "The New York School". Beginning during a teaching trip to California in the early 1930s, Hofmann was forced to remain in the United States to evaded the Nazi forces taking over his homeland. By 1933 he found himself in New York City. Needing to earn a livelihood he reestablished his school of fine arts in Greenwich Village. Over the next twenty-five years he influenced and introduced his hundreds of students to the ideas of European Modernism, and established a reputation for himself as an essential member of the Abstract Expressionists. This exhibition feature works, mostly from the 1940s.

Hans Hofmann (March 21, 1880 – February 17, 1966) was a German-born American abstract expressionist painter.
Hofmann was born in Weißenburg, Bavaria on March 21, 1880, the son of Theodor and Franziska Hofmann. When he was six he moved with his family to Munich. Here his father took a job with the government.
Starting at a young age, Hofmann gravitated towards science and mathematics. At age sixteen, he started work with the Bavarian government as assistant to the director of Public Works where he was able to increase his knowledge of mathematics. He went on to develop and patent such devices as the electromagnetic comptometer, a radar device for ships at sea, a sensitized light bulb, and a portable freezer unit for military use. Even with such great abilities in science and mathematics, Hofmann became interested in creative studies, beginning educational art training after the death of his father.
In 1932 he immigrated to the United States, where he resided until the end of his life.
Hofmann's art work is distinguished by a rigorous concern with pictorial structure, spatial illusion, and color relationships.

Roger Huntington Sessions (28 December 1896 – 16 March 1985) was an American composer, critic, and teacher of music.
Sessions was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a family that could trace its roots back to the American revolution. His mother, Ruth Huntington Sessions, was a direct descendent of Samuel Huntington, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Roger studied music at Harvard University from the age of 14. There he wrote for and subsequently edited the Harvard Musical Review. Graduating at age 18, he went on to study at Yale University under Horatio Parker and Ernest Bloch before teaching at Smith College. His first major compositions came while he was travelling Europe with his wife in his mid-twenties and early thirties.[citation needed]
Returning to the United States in 1933, he taught first at Princeton University (from 1936), moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught from 1945 to 1953, and then returned to Princeton until retiring in 1965. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1961. He was appointed Bloch Professor at Berkeley (1966–67), and gave the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University in 1968–69. He continued to teach on a part-time basis at the Juilliard School from 1966 until 1983.

Over the next twenty-five years he influenced and introduced his hundreds of students to the ideas of European Modernism, and established a reputation for himself as an essential member of the Abstract Expressionists. The centerpiece of Walls of Color: The Murals of Hans Hofmann are nine oil studies by Hofmann, each seven feet tall, for the redesign of the Peruvian city of Chimbote. This was Hofmann’s extraordinary collaboration, in 1950, with Catalan architect José Luis Sert – the man who designed the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris World’s Fair in 1937, for which Picasso’s great mural Guernica was conceived. Although never realized, this visionary project was to include a huge mosaic wall – a freestanding campanile without a bell in the town center – designed by Hofmann, which would incorporate not only his own highly evolved notions of Abstract Expressionist visual dynamics, but also forms symbolic of traditional Peruvian culture, religion and history.
Now nearly forgotten, Hofmann nonetheless went on to create two huge glass-mosaic murals in Manhattan. In 1956, for the developer William Kaufman, and in collaboration with the noted pioneer modernist architect William Lescaze, Hofmann created an astonishing, brilliantly colored mosaic mural, wrapped around the elevator bank in the main entrance hall of the office building at 711 Third Avenue. Two years later, in 1958, commissioned by the New York City Board of Education, Hofmann created a 64-foot long and 11-foot tall mosaic-tile mural for the High School of Printing (now the High School of Graphic Arts Communication) on West 49th Street.

This film profiles American artist Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) in the context of Modernism and reviews the past fifty years of his creative life. Am 16.01.2015 wurde Louis Hofmann für seine Rolle als Wolfgang in FREISTATT mit dem Bayerischen Filmpreis Nachwuchspreis 2014 ausgezeichnet. Begründung der Jury: Deutschland Ende der 60er Jahre – die Zeit, in der Kinder und Jugendliche in Heimen oftmals schutzlos brutalen Erziehungsmethoden ausgeliefert sind. Just in time for Basel's important Baselworld fair, the new hall complex of Messe Basel was inaugurated. Designed by the Basel-based architects Herzog & de Meuron, the new hall building changes the character of Basel's exhibition site considerably. The exhibition square is now clearly delineated towards the city. The key architectural and urban-planning feature of Herzog & de Meuron's new hall complex is the so-called City Lounge. This is a covered-over public space that is intended to revitalize the exhibition square. Anne (Lea van Acken), ihr Vater Otto (Ulrich Noethen), Mutter Edith (Martina Gedeck) und Schwester Margot (Stella Kunkat) versuchen, hier ein ganz normales Leben zu führen – bis die Deutschen die Niederlande besetzen und sich auch in Amsterdam die Situation für die Juden täglich verschlechtert. Als Margot einen Aufruf ins Arbeitslager erhält, beschließt Otto Frank, mit der Familie das lange geplante Versteck aufzusuchen und unterzutauchen. Mit Hilfe seiner Sekretärin Miep Gies (Gerti Drassl) und anderen Mitarbeitern hat er hierfür schon seit Wochen das Hinterhaus seines Firmensitzes in der Prinsengracht 263 als Versteck vorbereitet: Knapp mehr als 50m2, die von nun an das Zuhause der Familie Frank und, kurze Zeit später, auch von Hans (André Jung), Petronella (Margarita Broich) und Peter van Daan (Leonard Carow) sowie Albert Dussel (Arthur Klemt) werden. Die Hinterhausbewohner dürfen sich tagsüber kaum bewegen, erleben Bombennächte und sind in ständiger Angst, entdeckt zu werden. Ihre einzige Verbindung zur Außenwelt sind das Radio, Miep Gies und die anderen Helfer. Und dennoch finden sie auch im Hinterhaus zum Alltag: Es wird gelacht, geweint, gestritten und sich versöhnt. Und Anne Frank, die Jüngste unter ihnen, entdeckt neugierig, was es bedeutet, erwachsen zu werden. Im Licht der Ereignisse ihrer Zeit beobachtet und kommentiert sie all das sehr eindringlich: in ihrem Tagebuch, das sie zum 13. Geburtstag von ihrem Vater geschenkt bekommt.

Am 16.01.2015 wurde Louis Hofmann für seine Rolle als Wolfgang in FREISTATT mit dem Bayerischen Filmpreis Nachwuchspreis 2014 ausgezeichnet.
Begründung der Jury:
Deutschland Ende der 60er Jahre – die Zeit, in der Kinder und Jugendliche in Heimen oftmals schutzlos brutalen Erziehungsmethoden ausgeliefert sind. Jugendliche wie der in dem Film «Freistatt» von Louis Hofmann dargestellte Wolfgang, die im Gegenteil Unterstützung und Zuneigung bräuchten. Louis Hofmann spielt mit packender Eindringlichkeit und Überzeugungskraft Wolfgangs Suche nach Liebe und Menschlichkeit, seinen unbeugsamen Widerstand gegen Erniedrigung und Gewalt in dem Heim und schließlich die eigene Verrohung. Sowohl in einer in allen Facetten feinfühligen Darstellung als auch in erschütternder Realitätsnähe zeigt der junge Louis Hofmann eine durchgehend ausgereifte und großartige schauspielerische Leistung.

Just in time for Basel's important Baselworld fair, the new hall complex of Messe Basel was inaugurated. Designed by the Basel-based architects Herzog & de Meuron, the new hall building changes the character of Basel's exhibition site considerably. The exhibition square is now clearly delineated towards the city. The key architectural and urban-planning feature of Herzog & de Meuron's new hall complex is the so-called City Lounge. This is a covered-over public space that is intended to revitalize the exhibition square. Referencing Messe Basel's iconic "Rundhofhalle" (Hall 2, designed in the 1950s by Swiss architect Hans Hofmann), the City Lounge's most striking feature is a huge hole that breaks through the new hall 1 and brings light to the space below. As always with Herzog & de Meuron's designs, the facade is an essential element of the design. This time, it's a facade of articulated twisting bands (aluminum). The two exhibition floors are also offset from each other, to avoid the "big box" effect.
