Agnes Martin’s restrained yet evocative paintings came from her belief that spiritual inspiration rather than intellect created great work.
In this film, which includes rare archive footage of the artist in her studio in New Mexico, her art dealer and confidant Arne Glimcher remembers Martin’s philosophical ideas about her work and her rigorous process in developing her paintings.
Tate curator Frances Morris also reveals the mathematical precision behind Martin’s abstract masterpieces, and the intense experimentation which led to her signature grids.

On Wednesday 15th July 2015, Nancy Princenthal discussed Martin’s formative experiences, the development of her work, and the range of lively non-mainstream art communities in which she lived.
Renowned for her remarkable discipline and solitude, Agnes Martin led an extraordinary life. Born on a Canadian homestead in 1912, she didn’t settle in New York until 1957. Soon hailed as a leading Minimalist—despite insisting on a deeper connection with Abstract Expressionism—Martin left New York abruptly in 1967, roaming the Pacific Northwest in a camper. Her travels brought her back to New Mexico, where she remained until her death in 2004. Painting, as she said, with her “back to the world,” and managing mental illness that afflicted her throughout her adult life, she sustained a unique and subtly powerful vocabulary that drew international acclaim.
Nancy Princenthal, author of Agnes Martin: Her Art and Life (Thames & Hudson), is a New York-based critic and former Senior Editor of Art in America. Her writing has also appeared in Artforum, Parkett, and the New York Times, and in monographs on Hannah Wilke, Doris Salcedo and Robert Mangold.

In der ersten Retrospektive nach dem Tod der amerikanischen Malerin Agnes Martin (1912 – 2004) ist deren außergewöhnliches Schaffen in all seinen Facetten wieder und neu zu entdecken. Es ist ein der Abstraktion verpflichtetes Werk der leisen Töne, das sich im Umfeld des Abstrakten Expressionismus und der minimalistischen Tendenzen entwickelte.
Die Ausstellung ist organisiert von Tate Modern in Kooperation mit der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, dem Los Angeles County Museum of Art, und dem Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Agnes Martin is recognised for her evocative paintings and restrained style, which was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art.
For this film we invited producer Actress (aka Darren J Cunningham) to compose an original score inspired by Martin's artwork and journey across the US.
In 1967, just as her art was gaining acclaim, Martin abandoned the artistic community in New York City and went in search of solitude and silence. For almost two years she traveled across the US and Canada before finally settling in New Mexico.
From there within tightly prescribed limits she imposed on her own practice Martin was able to continue to make extraordinary, visionary paintings, for over three decades until her death in 2004.

In anticipation of the Agnes Martin traveling retrospective, scholars will discuss their research projects, many of which are in progress. Special attention will be given to challenges of (re)constructing an artist's legacy, given that much information about Martin (1912-2004) has not been in circulation, and publications are few. Presented by the School of Art and Design History and Theory (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/art-design-history-theory-school-adht/) and the School of Art, Media, and Technology (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/art-media-technology-school-amt/), both part of Parsons The New School for Design (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons).
Panel participants include:
• Tiffany Bell (editor at Artifex Press, and co-curator of the Agnes Martin retrospective), who will speak about her work as editor of Martin's digital catalogue raisonné
• Roger Cook (Royal Academy Schools,London), who will speak on his article theorizing Martin's sexuality in relation to her artwork, "Doorknob in the Desert: Agnes Martin's Queer Becoming"
• Suzanne Hudson (University of Southern California), who will speak about her book on Martin's painting Night Sea, which is part of the MIT Press series of books on one work of art
• Nancy Princenthal (School of Visual Arts, former senior editor for Art in America), who will speak about her forthcoming book, Agnes Martin: Her Life and Art, the first Agnes Martin biography/monograph
The conversation will be moderated by artist Karen Schiff, who has reviewed books on Agnes Martin for Art Journal and Art in America. Her "Agnes Martin Obituary Project" has been exhibited in New York and in Marfa, Texas, and is online at Art Journal.

BETWEEN THE LINES is a film about the Canadian-American painter Agnes Martin. The core of the material was produced in fall 2002 in Taos (New Mexico), Agnes Martin’s final place of residence. It consists of interviews and shots at work in her Taos Studio, complemented by images of selected paintings, archival footage, quotes from Agnes Martin’s writings, and meditative sequences of the sea she loved so much.
The interviews center around Agnes Martin’s deep insight to fundamental human experiences such as Love, Religion and Spirituality, Happiness, Friendship, Innocence and Death as well as various aspects of her life and art resp. the creative process.
BETWEEN THE LINES is, just as Agnes Martin’s art, a deep journey ‘towards the within’ and unfolds the unique path she has chosen in her life and art. It allows its audience to embark on a contemplative encounter with an exraordinary artist and human being.
AGNES MARTIN (1912 - 2004) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. She considered herself an abstract expressionist. Those who met her often used terms like inner silence, non-attachment and peace to describe her extraordinary presence. Hence, she was often called a mystic and a sage. Agnes Martin however rejected this kind of designation, she simply regarded her life as a quest for truth and her work as its expression through art.
Agnes Martin’s paintings, emerged from deep states of contemplation, are “concrete representations of abstract emotions” as she expressed it with the profound simplicity that was characteristic both for her way of life and her artistic vocabulary. From the early 1960s, the latter was limited to square canvases inscribed with lines or grids, using subtle colors that can appear almost immaterial. The paintings that Agnes Martin created this way are recognized as masterpieces of pure abstraction and timeless beauty.

Agnes Bernice Martin (March 22, 1912 – December 16, 2004) was a Canadian-born American abstract painter, often referred to as a minimalist; Martin considered herself an abstract expressionist. She won a National Medal of Arts from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1998.
Agnes Bernice Martin was born in Macklin, Saskatchewan, grew up in Vancouver, and moved to the United States in 1931, becoming a citizen in 1950. Martin studied at Western Washington University College of Education, Bellingham, WA, prior to receiving her B.A. (1942) from Teachers College, Columbia University. After hearing lectures by the Zen Buddhist scholar D. T. Suzuki at Columbia, she became interested in Asian thought, not as a religious discipline, but as a code of ethics, a practical how-to for getting through life. A few years following graduation, Martin matriculated at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, where she also taught art courses before returning to Columbia University to earn her M.A. (1952).

Charles Thomas "Chuck" Close (born July 5, 1940) is an American painter and photographer who achieved fame as a photorealist, through his massive-scale portraits. Though a catastrophic spinal artery collapse in 1988 left him severely paralyzed, he has continued to paint and produce work that remains sought after by museums and collectors.
Close was born in Monroe, Washington. His father died when he was eleven years old. Most of his early works are very large portraits based on photographs (Photorealism or Hyperrealism technique) of family and friends, often other artists. In an interview with Phong Bui in The Brooklyn Rail, Close describes an early encounter with a Jackson Pollock painting at the Seattle Art Museum: "I went to the Seattle Art Museum with my mother for the first time when I was 11. I saw this Jackson Pollock drip painting with aluminum paint, tar, gravel and all that stuff. I was absolutely outraged, disturbed. It was so far removed from what I thought art was. However, within 2 or 3 days, I was dripping paint all over my old paintings. In a way I’ve been chasing that experience ever since."

Agnes Martin is recognised for her evocative paintings and restrained style, which was underpinned by her deep conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. For this film we invited producer Actress (aka Darren J Cunningham) to compose an original score inspired by Martin's artwork and journey across the US. In 1967, just as her art was gaining acclaim, Martin abandoned the artistic community in New York City and went in search of solitude and silence. For almost two years she traveled across the US and Canada before finally settling in New Mexico. From there within tightly prescribed limits she imposed on her own practice Martin was able to continue to make extraordinary, visionary paintings, for over three decades until her death in 2004. AGNES MARTIN (1912 - 2004) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. She considered herself an abstract expressionist. Those who met her often used terms like inner silence, non-attachment and peace to describe her extraordinary presence. Hence, she was often called a mystic and a sage. Agnes Martin however rejected this kind of designation, she simply regarded her life as a quest for truth and her work as its expression through art.
Agnes Martin’s paintings, emerged from deep states of contemplation, are “concrete representations of abstract emotions” as she expressed it with the profound simplicity that was characteristic both for her way of life and her artistic vocabulary. From the early 1960s, the latter was limited to square canvases inscribed with lines or grids, using subtle colors that can appear almost immaterial. The paintings that Agnes Martin created this way are recognized as masterpieces of pure abstraction and timeless beauty.

Those who met her often used terms like inner silence, non-attachment and peace to describe her extraordinary presence. Hence, she was often called a mystic and a sage. Agnes Martin however rejected this kind of designation, she simply regarded her life as a quest for truth and her work as its expression through art.
Agnes Martin’s paintings, emerged from deep states of contemplation, are “concrete representations of abstract emotions” as she expressed it with the profound simplicity that was characteristic both for her way of life and her artistic vocabulary. From the early 1960s, the latter was limited to square canvases inscribed with lines or grids, using subtle colors that can appear almost immaterial. The paintings that Agnes Martin created this way are recognized as masterpieces of pure abstraction and timeless beauty.

In case you're not aware, the Fisher collection is lent, not given, to the museum ... The sculpture by Martin Puryear (one of the few artists of color in the museum) is one of the best works in the museum, far more interesting that the huge Serra rusted whale in the entrance way ... The only woman in the bunch, Agnes Martin, is represented by seven of her subtly Zen-like paintings of wheat and pink lines....
