Teaching appreciation and understanding for Native American music and culture with Lyz Jaakola
Minnesota is unique in the
United States for having a state learning standard specifically focused on the indelible musical contributions of its region’s own native cultures and peoples: “Describe the cultural and historical traditions of music, including the contributions of Minnesota
American Indian tribes and communities.”
Because of its cultural specificity and schools’ understandable concerns about misrepresenting those communities, it is a challenging standard for many music educators to teach.
As a composer, singer, instrumentalist, and leader, Lyz Jaakola is an extraordinary ambassador for Anishinaabe-Ojibwe music and culture. In this
Class Notes video, she offers an overview of
Ojibwe (also known as
Chippewa) identity—which comprises part of the larger group of peoples know

International Festival Aug. 10 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota
The dulcet strains of the balalaika opened the
Fifth International Festival in
Eden Prairie Aug. 10, 2008.
The stringed instrument is popular in
Russian folk music (think "
Dr. Zhivago") and sounds somewhat like a mandolin or a banjo. A balalaika orchestra from
St. Mary's Orthodox Church in
Minneapolis was the first of eight musical groups to perform at the event at
Starling Lake Park.
Billed as "a celebration of culture, art and food," the event featured entertainment, exhibits, games, music, dance and cuisine from many of the cultures represented in Eden Prairie, according to organizer
Sandy Wert of the Eden Prairie
Parks and Recreation Department. The first
International Festival was held in the summer of 2004. It was an outgrowth of discussion at two gatherings for immigrants that the

India/Indonesia blending music, connecting cultures
Kabir Bhajan in
Raga Bhupal Todi. This is a Nirguni Bhajan (a devotional piece that extols a formless or abstract entity). The lyrics, by the great poet saint Kabir, are very simple but deeply philosophical, contemplating on the many mysteries of life and expounding life's profound truths. The 8-beat rhythm cycle, is commonly found in folk music across
India. The emotional appeal of Raga Bhupal Todi is one of mysticism, contemplation and devotion. The musical composition is by Dr.
Pooja Pavan and her father, Pandit
Surendra Goswami. The tonal structure corresponds to
Indonesian Pelog Pathet Barang. The gamelan patterns here relate to Indonesian dhangdut style.

Cantus: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Is there some kind of weird vocal vortex in
Minnesota?
The state turns out so many excellent choral groups — at the school, church and professional levels — that it can arguably be dubbed the choral center of the
U.S.
The members of the male vocal ensemble called
Cantus, who huddled around
Bob Boilen's desk to sing for us, hail from that vortex — specifically
Minneapolis-St. Paul.
A quick note on the group's name, because it's more appropriate than you might think. "Cantus" means "singing" in
Latin, but it also refers to an old
European tradition. A student group who gathered to sing traditional songs and drink beer was once called a "cantus." And this modern-day group of Minnesotans indeed got its start in
1995 as a student singing group at
St. Olaf College in
Northfield, Minn. They did

In this
Class Notes video, she offers an overview of
Ojibwe (also known as
Chippewa) identity—which comprises part of the larger group of peoples known as
Anishinaabe. She takes us through different kinds of
Ojibwe musical expression, offering insight into Ojibwe history and tradition along the way.

International Festival Aug. 10 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota
The dulcet strains of the balalaika opened the
Fifth International Festival in
Eden Prairie Aug. 10, 2008.
The stringed instrument is popular in
Russian folk music (think "
Dr. Zhivago") and sounds somewhat like a mandolin or a banjo. A balalaika orchestra from
St. Mary's Orthodox Church in
Minneapolis was the first of eight musical groups to perform at the event at
Starling Lake Park.
Billed as "a celebration of culture, art and food," the event featured entertainment, exhibits, games, music, dance and cuisine from many of the cultures represented in Eden Prairie, according to organizer
Sandy Wert of the Eden Prairie
Parks and Recreation Department. The first
International Festival was held in the summer of 2004. It was an outgrowth of discussion at two gatherings for immigrants that the city's
Human Rights and
Diversity Commission hosted in
2003 to discuss issues related to Eden Prairie's growing diversity.
Featured performances highlighted cultures ranging from
Latin American folk music to
Somali poetry to
Japanese Kimono dressing. Eden Prairie's
Mingzhou Huaxia Chinese School presented dance performances and a TaiJi marshal arts presentation.
The school is a nonprofit organization that teaches children
Chinese, promotes
Chinese culture and community service. It is housed at
Central Middle School.
The Twin Cities-based Sansei Yonsei Kai Japanese
Dance Group demonstrated the nearly lost art of kitsuke - kimono dressing.
Other activities included cultural displays from such countries as
Brazil,
Pakistan and Somalia, body art by henna artist
Farida Kathawalla, multi-cultural crafts and face-painting. The festival was sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Eden Prairie Human Rights and Diversity Commission, the
International School of
Minnesota, the
American Muslim Community Center,
Morning Rotary Club of Eden Prairie and
Shakopee Total Rental.

They didn't tell us much about the beer, though.
Cantus went professional in
2000 and has cut 15 albums on its own label. Unlike some choral groups who specialize in one style of music, Cantus prides itself on diversity. Just take a look at the three songs its members chose for this concert.
"Wanting
Memories" is a song steeped in
African-American culture, written by
Ysaye Barnwell from
Sweet Honey in the Rock. "Zikr," composed by
A.R. Rahman — the same guy who scored the hit movie
Slumdog Millionaire — has roots in the
Sufi tradition, where deep chords and repeated phrases signal a slow burn toward religious ecstasy. And the group closes with
German composer
Franz Biebl's gorgeous "
Ave Maria," a signature piece for the group that blends traditional plainsong (or chant) with delicate melody and voluptuous harmonies that ascend heavenward.
Listening to Cantus, you understand that there's something about a group of people singing that touches listeners on a very human level.
Perhaps it explains why so many of us sing — and not just in the shower.
Chorus America estimates that 42.6 million
American adults and children sing in choirs. (A lot of them live in Minnesota!)
For the rest of us, whose pipes aren't quite that golden? We've always got excellent groups like Cantus to do the singing for us.
Set List

Unique talents of the five members of northern
Minnesota’s The WoodPicks have helped them forge a unique blend of instrumental dexterity and vocal presence. Their enjoyable stage show incorporates strong harmonies and musical style that features their own arrangements of original music and old favorites.
The group came together in
2005 when the band started playing northern Minnesota venues. Their acoustic mix includes
Gospel,
Bluegrass,
Country and
Americana music. One of their original arrangements, “Barn
Again!” was included in a collection of rural
Americana for the
Smithsonian Institute. They perform at county fairs, bluegrass festivals, urban and rural venues, and corporate events.

Program
"Gammelgården" means Old Farm in Swedish.
Visitors can step back in history and experience the lives of early Swedish immigrants in the only open air museum devoted to Swedish immigration in the
United States.
Visit the many buildings on Gammelgården Museum's 11 acres site. Your tour guide will give a lots of information about the Välkommen Hus, Präst Hus, Gammel Kyrkan, Ladugård, Immigrant Hus and Swedish Stuga. Visitors can get a glimpse of the daily lives of these immigrants and participate in events and classes to learn more about the culture and times of the immigrants.
As evidenced by the town's name, Scandia http://www.ci.scandia.mn.us/ has a rich Scandinavian heritage. Scandia was the site of what is believed to have been the first Swedish immigrant settlement in the
State of Minnesota. http://www.wchsmn.org/scandia/ In 1850, the first log cabin was built on the shores of Hay
Lake. The first sanctuary of
Elim Lutheran Church was built in 1856 on a site near Hay Lake. http://www.chisagocityheritage.org/simple-swedish-ring-map
.pdf
Gammelgarden Museum is owned by Elim Lutheran Church and since
1972 has preserved, presented, and promoted Swedish immigrant heritage and history, with events such as Spelmansstämma, "Midsommarafton", and "Dalapalooza". The latter is a reference to the
Dalecarlian horses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalecarlian_horse the city has erected to welcome visitors, in much the same way
Saint Paul, Minnesota uses
Peanuts characters.
Visitor comments
The Gammelgarden Museum has a main building with
Swedish art, furniture, etc., which was free to browse. I think some of the displays change from time to time. There was a special display of Swedish copper works. Also, in the main building is a gift shop with lots of Swedish items and foods at reasonable prices. The main attraction is the collection of farm buildings, a church and a house for a preacher. You can walk around and look in the windows, but don't expect to see much. We went back the next day to get the tour and it was well worth the cost. The tour guide knew his stuff. He made it fun and interesting and was able to answer all of our questions. This was my favorite place to visit in the
Chisago Lakes area.
We love visiting the Gammelgarden on days when there are people dressed up and giving tours. It is a very fun and educational living history museum.
Great for all ages.
