Every year in North American an estimated 4 billion board feet of usable urban lumber is cut up for firewood, mulched, or taken to the dump. On May 23rd, 2014 as part of the International Living Future green building conference (living-future.org), David Barmon and his business partners, Mark Parisien and Daniel Baca held an urban lumber milling demonstration in Pioneer Square, affectionately known as Portland's living room. With the help of fellow urban lumber enthusiasts, they milled dimensional lumber, slabs, and bowls from urban trees. They also gave away tree seedlings to plant the next generation of urban lumber. David, Mark, and Daniel are working to spark a movement to not only streamline the process to utilize existing urban trees for lumber but also plan for the future with urban lumber in mind. They are advocating the use of market based economics to incentivize the planting of billions of trees to restore the forests of the past while providing people with high quality wood building materials.
