Here are some tips from Mary DeWalt:
What I would like to talk about is what makes for successful décor? This room, this whole home, actually, the color scheme is gray (the backgrounds are all gray) with white and bright yellow to kind of ignite the room. The important thing when you have rich wall color like we have here, which is a nice warm gray (almost taupe) is contrast. You have to bring it to life with some other contrasting color and in this case it is white. We have done a very affordable wainscoting treatment with a chair rail and applied molding and flat stock and below that we have drywall and the drywall is left smooth and the whole element is painted with latex enamel to match the trim so it actually looks like a full wainscot but for half the price. This is a very nice contrast. It brings a lot of drama to the two colors.
Reflective surfaces are also important to bringing a room to life
. As you can see, we, of course, have the mirror over our sideboard. The mirror has a reflective, metallic, wonderful beefy frame to it. We always like to use white lampshades whenever possible in a room because the white lampshades also provide contrast and they are brighter, and also just give off a nicer light. These lamps have crystal accents on them and they are silver, so again, it's very reflective. Since our scheme is yellow, white, and gray we chose orchids which are white with yellow on the inside.
Our formal dining room table is formal, but not too formal and we brought it to life as well. We have the dark table, so we used light placemats with yellow stitching to contrast to the dark table. Then we have layers of plates with one bright yellow plate below the bowls in the center to bring a smile to your face! It kind of lightens everything up! Then to top it all off we have the silver candelabras in the center. Very elegant! Then one last thing is the silver inserts in the sideboard. Very, very elegant, but at the same time, a friendly, warm environment for a formal dinner party!
