Zion National Park is located in the Southwestern United States, near Springdale, Utah. A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile (590 km2) park is Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles (24 km) long and up to half a mile (800 m) deep, cut through the reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone by the North Fork of the Virgin River. The lowest elevation is 3,666 ft (1,117 m) at Coalpits Wash and the highest elevation is 8,726 ft (2,660 m) at Horse Ranch Mountain. Located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert regions, the park's unique geography and variety of life zones allow for unusual plant and animal diversity. Numerous plant species as well as 289 species of birds, 75 mammals (including 19 species of bat), and 32 reptiles inhabit the park's four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland, and coniferous forest. Zion National Park includes mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches.
Zion (Hebrew: צִיּוֹן Ṣiyyôn), also transliterated Sion, Sayon, Syon, Tzion or Tsion, is a place name often used as a synonym for Jerusalem. The word is first found in 2 Samuel 5:7 which dates from c.630–540 BCE according to modern scholarship. It commonly referred to a specific mountain near Jerusalem (Mount Zion), on which stood a Jebusite fortress of the same name that was conquered by David and was named the City of David. The term Tzion came to designate the area of Jerusalem where the fortress stood, and later became a metonym for Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, the city of Jerusalem and "the World to Come", the Jewish understanding of the hereafter.
In Kabbalah the more esoteric reference is made to Tzion being the spiritual point from which reality emerges, located in the Holy of Holies of the First, Second and Third Temple.
The etymology of the word Zion (ṣiyôn) is uncertain. Mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Samuel (2 Samuel 5:7) as the name of the Jebusite fortress conquered by King David, its origin likely predates the Israelites. If Semitic, it may be derived from the Hebrew root ṣiyyôn ("castle") or the Hebrew ṣiyya ("dry land," Jeremiah 51:43). A non-Semitic relationship to the Hurrian word šeya ("river" or "brook") has also been suggested.
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Bring Plenty of water for this trip, you'll need it, good hiking shoes will also help. Riding the bus getting there was half the fun. A mostly paved walkway leads you through a ravine to the base of the megalith where there is a long set of steep switchbacks that guide you up to the first landing Patriarchs Gate. From there you need to ascend up a steep spine guided by chain handrails up slippery steps carved out of the sandstone. I sprinkle in some great tips for visiting Zion National Park during my one day stay at the Zion Lodge.
This beautiful view was just outside the back door of the room we stayed at Springdale, Utah. The Driftwood Lodge has probably the best view of Zion Canyon anywhere in town. It is quiet and you can listen to the meadowlark and the sounds of the Virgin River flowing past. It is an amazing gem in Zion.

The Zion Mt. Carmel Highway (SR-9 or HWY 9), the road in and through Zion National Park is one of the most scenic highways one can drive or (even better) ride on. It is hard to keep your eyes on the road with so much beautiful scenery. The movie takes you through the whole park, entering at the East entrance and exiting at the south entrance. It takes only 22 minutes to ride through this national park. One of the best roads I have ever seen. A one day hike will never justify the beauty of Zion National Park. So, how about 4 days and over 55 miles? In this video, you'll see popular viewpoints such as hiking to the top of Angels Landing. Yet, there are views that you probably won't see anywhere else in one video. This includes: Shelf Canyon, Northern Deertrap Mountain, Southern Deertrap Mountain, Cable Mountain, East Rim Trail, Hidden Canyon, West Rim Trail, Wildcat Trail, NorthGate Peaks, Kolob Terrace, Eastern Zion, Zion Narrows Entrance, and more! So, sit back, relax and enjoy what Zion National Park can offer for those who seek adventure!
We started out the day at 330am from Moab UT and drove to Zion just for Angels Landing and did not get back to Moab till 10pm. Wife and sons friend made it about 1/3 of the way up. Son made it about 2/3 of the way up. I have been talking about doing this for years so I had to finish. And I did! I'm so glad I did because the views were amazing!

My son and I did this awesome 16-mile hike, 12 of which are in the water. We cowboy camped at site #5. The water levels were below average at 32 cfs.
