The Networked Society is a term used to describe a future ecosystem, envisioned by the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) company Ericsson, in which widespread internet connectivity drives change for individuals and communities.
Connectivity means a device can digitally communicate with and transfer data to other systems, through a real-time communication network (typically the internet). It is expected that people living in the Networked Society will be able to use connectivity to improve their lives and businesses. New services in e-health, for example, will be driven by connectivity, mobility and cloud computing in the Networked Society.
The Networked Society was first presented by Ericsson President and CEO Hans Vestberg in a YouTube video on August 26, 2011. The Networked Society concept has been discussed further in other videos, animations, infographics and articles.
On July 16, 2013, The Guardian published a video interview from the Activate London Summit 2013, where Vestberg explained how increasing connectivity will create access to information, services and communication that will transform society, business and the way we live our lives.
A society is a group of people involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.
A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.
Hans Vestberg (born 23 June 1965) is a Swedish businessman and the current CEO of telecommunications company Ericsson.
Vestberg holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Uppsala University.
Vestberg joined Ericsson in 1988. He has broad international experience, having held various management positions for Ericsson in China, Brazil, Mexico and the US. He remains the international adviser to the Governor of Guangdong, China.
In 2011, Vestberg was named the 6th most powerful man in wireless by Fierce Wireless.
He is a leading advocate of the Millennium Development Goals, and for the potential of mobility and broadband to tackle some of the world’s most compelling issues such as poverty, health, education and climate change. He is a founding member of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, where he chairs the task group on the post-2015 development agenda after having chaired the Commission’s climate-change working group. Vestberg is also a member of the Leadership Council of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Every Day - Networked Society Intro Film is a short film about the changes in everyday life. This version is updated with 2016 data.
This video lecture outlines Manuell Castells' theory of the network society.
We are all living through the early stages of an extraordinary revolution. Connecting not just people but communities, systems and intelligence. Enabling us to collaborate, innovate, sustain, learn, care and participate. When one person connects their life changes. With everything connected our world changes. A connected world is just the beginning.
Information technology is unleashing the most radical force of our time, hyperconnectivity, which is reshaping all areas of our technology, economy and social institutions according to a new set of rules. The concept of a network society is used to describe this evolution in the development of social organizations as we move into an information and knowledge economy. Within such a context many people believe that we are on the cusp of a fundamental transformation in our political-economy, in how we choose to organize society in respect to industry, organizations, and communities. This new form of society that is believed to be emerging is variously called the information or the network society. Technologies enable people to interact, innovate and share information in totally new ways. People are empowered, business is liberated and the society is more transparent. But how to take advantage of all this? And what does it take to become a networked society? IP for the Networked Society enables service providers to grow their businesses profitably. It allows them to create and offer differentiating services with agility and efficiency.
Positive change in the world takes a combination of brilliant ideas, good timing, and a lot of hard work. Ericsson’s global network of over 100,000 innovative people work together to help shape the society we live in. In our 140 year history, our change-makers have continuously shaped our society by bringing communications to everyone, everywhere.
Why would an operator want to introduce Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in their networks? Well, because they’re driven by a desire to speed up the introduction of new services; introduce innovative services by exposing their network assets; and improve efficiency and reduce risk in terms of how networks are built and operated. To remain relevant as we move into 5G and the Networked Society, where everyone and everything in society is connected to a network, NFV will enable operators to launch new services and address new segments to meet the rapidly changing requirements. https://www.ericsson.com/networks/

ERIK KRUSE, Ericsson - Networked Society – In a connected world, everything is possible http://imworld.ro
What does Internet of Things mean according to Ericsson? What is 5G going to bring to the table? What will the connected society look like in 2020? These questions and much more are covered in the following keynote by Aniruddho Basu, VP Head of Technology Advisory at Ericsson. Aniruddho goes into Ericsson's vision called The Networked Society. It's an exciting vision that describes how society will look when everything is connected. Ericsson estimates that there will more than 9 billion mobile subscriptions by 2020, compared to 7 billion today. However, mobile data traffic is estimated to increase almost 10 times the amount being distributed today. Smartphone adoption is driving this development, and Ericsson is one of the key drivers globally who are making it possible. Availability of...

Robert Puskaric, President, region Northern Europe and Central Asia, Ericsson. Our world is experiencing a shift that rivals the magnitude of our journey into the industrial society. We are on the brink to the Networked Society. It took 100 years to connect one billion places and 25 years to connect five billion people. The next step is connecting things. Ericsson envisions more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020. Where anything that benefits from a connection will have one, to the advantage of people, business, and society. This is a starting point for new ways of innovating, collaborating, share and get informed.
