Panelling (or paneling in the U.S.) is a millwork wall covering constructed from rigid or semi-rigid components. These are traditionally interlocking wood, but could be plastic or other materials.
Panelling was developed in antiquity to make rooms in stone buildings more comfortable. The panels served to insulate the room from the cold stone. In more modern buildings, such panelling is often installed for decorative purposes. Panelling, such as wainscoting and boiserie in particular, may be extremely ornate and is particularly associated with seventeenth and eighteenth century interior design, Victorian architecture in Britain, and its international contemporaries.
The term wainscot (UK /ˈweɪnskət/ or US /ˈweɪnskɒt/) originally applied to high quality riven oak boards. The Oxford English Dictionary states that it derives from the medieval German wagenschot as well as wageschot or 'wall-board'. Johnson's Dictionary defined it thus:
Wainscot [wageschot, Dutch], the inner wooden covering of a wall.
In this video we look at how we designed and built the paneling in the dining room. It is a Shaker or Wainscot type style consisting of a raised frame with a trim moulding, skirting and top rail. A very cheap and effective design, this worked out at only £12 per metre plus paint and the skirting/base board. It would be even cheaper if not using moisture resistant MDF. There are many ways of doing this, and much easier ways should you have straight stud walls rather than 100 year old stone to work with! However hopefully this will help anyone looking to do something similar. Here is how we created a tongue and groove effect paneling for the kitchen using a router and straight edge. This proved to be a very cost effective way of doing it and resulted in a far superior finish than what was available to buy pre made. It also allowed us to create our secret door to the cellar in the previous video. We used a combination of regular MDF and also moisture resistant MDF in areas where needed. All the panels will be primed and then finished in an oil based eggshell. Please remember to subscribe to keep up to date with the project!
