Black and white, often abbreviated B/W or B&W, and hyphenated black-and-white when used as an adjective, is any of several monochrome forms in visual arts.
Black-and-white images are not usually starkly contrasted black and white. They combine black and white in a continuum producing a range of shades of gray. Further, many monochrome prints in still photography, especially those produced earlier in its development, were in sepia (mainly for archival stability), which yielded richer, subtler shading than reproductions in plain black-and-white.
Some popular black-and-white media of the past include:
Black and white is a form of visual representation that does not use color.
Black and white may also refer to:
White is an achromatic color, literally a "color without hue", that is a mixture of the frequencies of all the colors of the visible spectrum. It is one of the most common colors in nature, the color of sunlight, snow, milk, chalk, limestone and other common minerals. In many cultures white represents or signifies purity, innocence, and light, and is the symbolic opposite of black, or darkness. According to surveys in Europe and the United States, white is the color most often associated with perfection, the good, honesty, cleanliness, the beginning, the new, neutrality, and exactitude.
In ancient Egypt and ancient Rome, priestesses wore white as a symbol of purity, and Romans wore a white toga as a symbol of citizenship. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance a white unicorn symbolized chastity, and a white lamb sacrifice and purity; the widows of kings dressed in white rather than black as the color of mourning. It sometimes symbolizes royalty; it was the color of the French kings (black being the color of the queens) and of the monarchist movement after the French Revolution as well as of the movement called the White Russians (not to be confounded with Belarus, literally "White Russia") who fought the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Greek and Roman temples were faced with white marble, and beginning in the 18th century, with the advent of neoclassical architecture, white became the most common color of new churches, capitols and other government buildings, especially in the United States of America. It was also widely used in 20th century modern architecture as a symbol of modernity, simplicity and strength.
Black is the darkest color, the result of the absence of or complete absorption of light. It is the opposite of white (the combined spectrum of color or light). It is an achromatic color, literally a color without color or hue. It is one of the four primary colors in the CMYK color model, along with cyan, yellow, and magenta, used in color printing to produce all the other colors.
Black was one of the first colors used by artists in neolithic cave paintings. In the 14th century, it began to be worn by royalty, the clergy, judges and government officials in much of Europe. It became the color worn by English romantic poets, businessmen and statesmen in the 19th century, and a high fashion color in the 20th century.
In the Roman Empire, it became the color of mourning, and over the centuries it was frequently associated with death, evil, witches and magic. According to surveys in Europe and North America, it is the color most commonly associated with mourning, the end, secrets, magic, force, violence, evil, and elegance.
The National Gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, in Central London. Founded in 1824, it houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. The Gallery is an exempt charity, and a non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Its collection belongs to the public of the United Kingdom and entry to the main collection is free of charge. It is among the most visited art museums in the world, after the Musée du Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Unlike comparable museums in continental Europe, the National Gallery was not formed by nationalising an existing royal or princely art collection. It came into being when the British government bought 38 paintings from the heirs of John Julius Angerstein, an insurance broker and patron of the arts, in 1824. After that initial purchase the Gallery was shaped mainly by its early directors, notably Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, and by private donations, which comprise two-thirds of the collection. The resulting collection is small in size, compared with many European national galleries, but encyclopaedic in scope; most major developments in Western painting "from Giotto to Cézanne" are represented with important works. It used to be claimed that this was one of the few national galleries that had all its works on permanent exhibition, but this is no longer the case.
Black & White Gallery was founded in New York in 2002. From the start, the Gallery has been committed to cultivating promising artists in the initial and more advanced phases of their careers exploring contemporary themes and concepts through multiple mediums. The Gallery's original location was a unique industrial indoor/outdoor ground floor space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn - the breeding ground of emerging talent at that time. From 2006 to 2010 Black & White Gallery operated from two locations - Williamsburg and Chelsea. In 2010 the Chelsea location was closed and not-for-profit Black & White Project Space was established. From 2010 to 2012 both the Gallery and Project Space operated side by side presenting simultaneous exhibition programs out of the Gallery's original indoor/outdoor locat...

James Kalm drops into Black and White and views the Project "This is What I Remember" by Isidro Blasco. After studying architecture, Blasco concentrated his efforts on becoming an artist and using his technical training to investigate society's assumptions about fabricated space. Given several weeks to create a bare bones architectural labyrinth in the sculpture garden at this Williamsburg gallery, viewers can wander through the structure and experience Blasco's whimsical distortion of inhabitable space.

New York premiere of The World As Of Yesterday by the Swedish artist Anastasia Ax / two-act performance and site-responsive installation. Acting as an archeologist who collects, catalogues and evaluates debris and relics in her own destructive fury, Swedish artist Anastasia Ax not only challenges the notion of artistic, social and cultural values but also inspects people's reactions and initiates their transformation from observers to co-formers of her pieces. The audience is invited to emphasize the experience of her artistic views by participating and altering the work by leaving marks and traces. The World As Of Yesterday received the 2015 Faber-Castell Award Prize and has been performed in 2015 at Neues Museum, Nuremberg, Germany, in 2014 at Skovsnogen Art Space, Denmark and Stockho...

In this video I'm going to talk about the work of Ansel Adams. Ansel is one of the most successful photographers of all time. He is largely responsible for starting the "California School" of photographers along with Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston. Their Group f/64 rejected the Pictorialism styles of the day in favor of "pure" or "straight photography" His most notable subjects were landscapes, particularly those of Yosemite National Park. Ansel developed printing techniques that yielded beautiful prints with an emphasis on tonality and sharpness. Along with Fred Archer, the two developed what we know today as the Zone System. The Zone System is a formalized process for black and white printing. It divides the picture into measured zone densities allowing the photographer to contro...

Sun Xun is one of China’s most talented and ambitious young artists. He experiments with drawings, traditional ink paintings and woodcuts, and then uses new technologies to transform them into his artistic trademark – black and white animations. Born in 1980 in Fuxin, his works often explore and question what is known about Chinese history. In 2006 he founded his own animation studio called Pi and produces large amounts of work each year. In just under 10 years, Sun Xun has held over 30 solo exhibitions, most notably at the Hayward Gallery in London, and at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
