David Gamrekeli (Georgian: დავით გამრეკელი, 27 July 1911 – 29 November 1977) was a Georgian baritone opera singer.
Gamrekeli was born in Chiatura, Western Georgia. In 1935, he graduated from the Tbilisi State Conservatory, studying under Professor Vronsky. That year, the young baritone sang at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre the role of Prince Yeletsky from Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades. In 1937 in Moscow, Georgian Literature and the Arts of the decade, he performed Kiazo's role from Paliashvili's opera Daisi (Sunset). One year later he became laureate of the First All-Union Competition of Vocalists.
He sang the leading roles from Georgian and foreign operas at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1943, he was awarded the title People's Artist. Gamrekeli performed as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre from 1944 to 1952.
Gamrekeli's opera repertoire included thirty opera roles, including Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Verdi's Rigoletto, the roles of Renato and Germont, Escamillo from Bizet's Carmen and others.
The Toreli (Georgian: თორელი), earlier known as the Gamrekeli (გამრეკელი), were a noble family in medieval Georgia, known from the 10th century and prominent into the 14th. The dynastic name "Toreli" is derived from the territorial epithet, literally meaning "of Tori", a historic district and the family's original fiefdom in south-central Georgia.
The Toreli rose to particular prominence during the Georgian Golden Age under Queen Tamar (r. 1178/1184–1213) and her immediate successors, George IV (r. 1213–1223) and Rusudan (r. 1223–1246). They held fiefs in south and central Georgia and, at times, governed the newly conquered north Armenian districts on behalf of the crown. Several members of the family – one of the most important princely houses at that time – occupied important posts in the administration and army, including the dignity of amirspasalar. A senior branch held the hereditary office of eristavi ("duke") of Akhalkalaki, and a junior branch – Akhaltsikheli – that of Akhaltsikhe. At one point in the 12th century, the former was briefly surpassed by the latter, whose influence quickly waned after the death of Shalva and Ivane Akhaltsikheli during the Khwarezmian invasion in 1225.
Zacharia Petres dze Paliashvili (Georgian: ზაქარია ფალიაშვილი), also known as Zachary Petrovich Paliashvili (Russian: Захарий Петрович Палиашви́ли), (1871–1933) was a Georgian composer. Regarded as one of the founders of the Georgian classical music, his work is known for its eclectic fusion of folk songs and stories with 19th century Romantic classical themes. He was the founder of the Georgian Philharmonic Society and later, the head of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire. The Georgian National Opera and Ballet Theater of Tbilisi was named in his honor in 1937. Notably, Paliashvili's music serves as the basis of the National Anthem of Georgia.
Although Paliashvili has composed works for symphony orchestra (e.g., Georgian Suite on Folk Themes), he is probably best known for his vocal music, which includes operas Abesalom da Eteri (based on a folk tale "Eteriani"), Daisi (Twilight), and Latavra.
Paliashvili was born on 16 August 1871 in Kutaisi in the family of Petre Ivanes dze Paliashvili (1838–1913), an elder at the Kutaisi Georgian Catholic Church, who was said to be a model father and husband. Zacharia's mother was Maria Pavles asuli Mesarkishvili (1851–1916). Zacharia was the third child in a family of eighteen children (thirteen sons and five daughters). Seven children died in infancy. Although Zacharia's parents were not professional musicians, their children remembered their mother's singing.
