Here it is. Interstate 5 in Southern California, going up and then down the Grapevine. Simply put, this is one of THE MOST dramatic grades along the entire Interstate Highway System.
This video starts exactly where my Portland video of I-5 ended. In this video, we take a ride out of the downtown area of Portland, Oregon and head north and eventually cross the Columbia River via the Interstate Bridge into Washington State! The video starts at mile marker 304 in Oregon and ends at Washington mile marker 11. We pass thru the major suburb of Vancouver, WA in the video as we make our way thru the northern suburbs of the Portland Metropolitan area. Note: I said that Vancouver, WA is named after Vancouver BC, which is untrue, they are both named after George Vancouver, and the american city is actually older. My mistake. Enjoy the ride!

I-5 in Portland is known for heavy traffic congestion and I was luckily filming this on a Sunday afternoon with no issues. BMW 325Ci E46 driving from San Diego to Los Angeles on the interstate 5 and 405 filmed with a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition in 720p and using 60 fps with pro tune and camera raw on color corrected in Fina Cut Pro. we start right on top of the 76 by Camp Pendleton. I use the 5 until the 5/405 split and continue driving all the way to where they both merge again, hence the u turn. afterwards we head back to UCLA our main destination.

Interstate 5 (I-5) is the main Interstate Highway on the West Coast of the United States, running largely parallel to the Pacific Ocean coastline from Canada to Mexico (Washington to southernmost California). It serves some of the largest cities on the U.S. West Coast, including Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego, and also links the capital cities of Washington (Olympia), Oregon (Salem), and California (Sacramento) together. The highway's southern terminus is the Mexico – United States border and its northern terminus is the Canada – United States border; it is the only Interstate highway to touch the U.S. borders with both Canada and Mexico. Upon crossing the Mexican border at its southern terminus, Interstate 5 continues to Tijuana, Baja California as Mexico Federal Highway 1. Upon crossing the Canadian border at its northern terminus, it continues to Vancouver, British Columbia as British Columbia Highway 99.
Interstate 5 links to control cities in California (San Diego, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Redding, Mount Shasta, Weed, and Yreka), Oregon (Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Roseburg, Eugene, Salem, and Portland), and Washington (Tacoma, Seattle, Everett, Mount Vernon, and Bellingham). Vancouver, British Columbia becomes the highway's control city north of Bellingham; it is signed as "Vancouver B.C." in order to avoid confusion with Vancouver, Washington.

I use the 5 until the 5/405 split and continue driving all the way to where they both merge again, hence the u turn. afterwards we head back to UCLA our main destination.

OSP Trooper struck by distracted motorist
Deputies Investigating After Oregon State Trooper Struck by Inattentive Motorist Today at 2:30 p.m., Marion County Deputies were asked to investigate a crash on Interstate 5 involving an Oregon State Trooper and another motorist. Deputies were on scene for approximately one hour and one south bound lane of traffic was affected during the investigation. Deputies concluded that Trenton Simon, age 25, of Scio was traveling south on Interstate 5 near the D Street overpass. Mr. Simon was in the fast lane when he took his eye off of the roadway, when Mr. Simon looked back up at the roadway, traffic had slowed and he swerved onto the left shoulder to avoid a collision. When Mr. Simon swerved he struck an Oregon State Trooper's vehicle that was parked and conducting speed enforcement on that ... -

Motorcycle Crash in Gold Hill Oregon
Caught this on video today driving through the Gold Hill Oregon area on my way to Medford Oregon. Jackson County, Ore. – A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he crashed his motorcycle into a semi-truck on Interstate 5 between Central Point and Gold Hill. Oregon State Police said the crash happened around 1:30 Thursday afternoon near milepost 33. According to OSP, a man driving a motorcycle rear-ended a semi-truck on southbound I-5. Police believe speed was a factor. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the driver of the semi-truck was uninjured. -

Deputies Investigating After Oregon State Trooper Struck by Inattentive Motorist
Today at 2:30 p.m., Marion County Deputies were asked to investigate a crash on Interstate 5 involving an Oregon State Trooper and another motorist. Deputies were on scene for approximately one hour and one south bound lane of traffic was affected during the investigation.
Deputies concluded that Trenton Simon, age 25, of Scio was traveling south on Interstate 5 near the D Street overpass. Mr. Simon was in the fast lane when he took his eye off of the roadway, when Mr. Simon looked back up at the roadway, traffic had slowed and he swerved onto the left shoulder to avoid a collision.
When Mr. Simon swerved he struck an Oregon State Trooper's vehicle that was parked and conducting speed enforcement on that section of the interstate. Trooper Jason Davis was leaning out of the driver's side door using his Lidar and the resulting impact ejected him away from the vehicle and onto the shoulder. Mr. Simons Volkswagen Jetta rolled over and came to rest in one of the southbound lanes.
Luckily neither the Trooper nor Mr. Simon were seriously injured in the collision, both are being evaluated at Salem Hospital. Mr. Simon has been issued a citation for Careless Driving and both cars had to be towed from the scene. The Sheriff's Office does not anticipate any further release of information regarding this incident.

Jackson County, Ore. – A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after he crashed his motorcycle into a semi-truck on Interstate 5 between Central Point and Gold Hill.
Oregon State Police said the crash happened around 1:30 Thursday afternoon near milepost 33.
According to OSP, a man driving a motorcycle rear-ended a semi-truck on southbound I-5. Police believe speed was a factor. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.
