LEAD IN :
One of the world's most unusual pieces of real estate, the fortress known as
Dracula's castle, complete with 800 years of history, has officially been put up for sale in
Transylvania, Romania.
The 13th century fortress called
Bran castle is more commonly known as "
Castle Dracula."
New York architect Archduke Dominic
Habsburg last year offered to sell the castle to the local authorities for
US$80 million, but that offer was rejected.
On Monday (2 July), he formally listed the castle for sale to the right purchaser.
He predicted the castle would sell for more than US$135 million.
STORYLINE:
This imposing castle that dominates the surrounding countryside in
Transylvania is for sale.
Some have claimed the castle once belonged to Vlad the Impaler, who is thought to have been the inspiration for
Bram Stoker's vampire character, Dracula.
Vlad III was a prince of
Wallachia, now part of Romania, who lived from 1431 - 1476.
He is said to have punished criminals by impaling them on stakes, thus earning the nickname 'impaler'
His surname
Draculea (sic), is a diminutive derived from his father's title Dracul, which means dragon or demon in old Romanian.
However, there is no evidence that
Vlad ever lived at Bran castle.
Some legends maintain that Vlad was briefly a prisoner at the fortress.
It is estimated that more than 400,
000 visitors a year, over half of them foreign, visit the castle.
