In fiction, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character (usually the protagonist) in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character. In some cases, a subplot can be used as a foil to the main plot. This is especially true in the case of metafiction and the "story within a story" motif. The word foil comes from the old practice of backing gems with foil in order to make them shine more brightly. A foil usually either differs drastically or is extremely similar but with a key difference setting them apart. The concept of a foil is also more widely applied to any comparison that is made to contrast a difference between two things. Thomas F. Gieryn places these uses of literary foils into three categories which Tamara Antoine and Pauline Metze explain as: those that emphasize the heightened contrast (this is different because ...), those that operate by exclusion (this is not X because...), and those that assign blame ("due to the slow decision-making procedures of government..."). The Bohemians of the Latin Quarter audiobook Henry MURGER The Bohemians of the Latin Quarter Henry MURGER (1832 - 1861), translated by ANONYMOUS ( - ) As much as any other work of literature, Henri Murger’s 1851 collection of witty sketches Scènes de la vie de bohème shaped the later romanticized image of the bohemian artist: independent, insouciant, exuberantly lustful, devoted to Art for Art’s sake no matter how cold and hungry the artist might be. Four young Parisian artists, Schaunard the composer, Marcel the painter, Rodolphe the poet, and Colline the philosopher, form an informal Bohemian alliance dedicated to Art and the joy of Life. Pretty and faithless young mistresses come and go from their beds, most notably Mimi, Phémie, and Musette, while the young artists do their best to foil their creditors and feed their bellies on the way to artistic glory. Resisting the conforming forces of Success and Society is their greatest challenge, and in the end the question is: Does a time come at last to give up the joys of Bohemia? Youth is Fleeting Henry Murger (1832 - 1861) Louis-Henri Murger, also known as Henri Murger and Henry Murger (27 March 1822 – 28 January 1861) was a French novelist and poet. He is chiefly distinguished as the author of Scènes de la vie de bohème, from his own experiences as a desperately poor writer living in a Parisian attic, and member of a loose club of friends who called themselves "the water drinkers" (because they were too poor to afford wine). In his writing he combines instinct with pathos and humour, sadness his predominant tone. The book is the basis for the operas La bohème (Puccini) and La bohème (Leoncavallo), and, at greater removes, the zarzuela Bohemios (Amadeu Vives), the operetta Das Veilchen vom Montmartre (Kálmán) and the Broadway musical Rent. He wrote lyrics as well as novels and stories, the chief being La Chanson de Musette, "a tear," says Gautier, "which has become a pearl of poetry". henri murger la vie de bohème la bohème puccini vie de bohème puccini la bohème the bohemian life la boheme plot la vie bohème murger boheme bohemian bourgeois henri murger boheme la bohe la boheme de puccini french bohemian murger henri la boheme book henri murger la vie de boheme la vie de la boheme vie la boheme vie bohème bourgeois bohemians une vie de bohème bohemians of the latin quarter the la boheme what is la boheme plot of la boheme la boheme in english bohemian in french bohemia life the bohemians of the latin quarter la vie bohemian la boheme english life boheme bohemian french de boheme boheme la a bohemian life la boheme author plot la boheme bohemia name bohémian a la boheme a bohème la boheme operası lá boheme la vie boheme a la boheme for families what is the bohemian life who were the bohemians la boheme la boheme french bohemia bohemian and bourgeois
This video looks at the idea of making high voltage capacitors using laminated foil sheets. The end goal being a simple, space efficient high voltage capacitor of reasonable farads. For minimal cost. I decided to buy a laminator and go this way after finding these lamination pockets highly tolerant to high voltage while working on my TEA Laser. 2 layers of 80 microns proved to be very hard to destroy. The max spark gap shown in the video works out to be around 15,000 volts. So as is the capacitors have a safe working limit of around 10,000 volts. At a cost of around 25 cents per sheet, its about the cheapest high voltage capacitor you will find. Its also one of the fastest due to the 160 micron dielectric, leading to very low induction.

My ex-husband the atheist has become a character in several of my sermons, serving as a foil to my pious religiosity. But he has railed against religion enough on his Facebook feed that I feel that I must finally respond with this letter.

Wikipedia: "In ancient Greek literature, an EIDOLON is a spirit-image of a living or dead person; a shade or phantom look-alike of the human form." I think this might explain something... but for now, we're playing Eidolon, a minimalist survival exploration game. It's in the same genre of "relax em-up" atmospheric games like Proteus, Mountain, or even Minecraft (the way I play it). The Examiner 2015-04-12In fiction, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character (usually the protagonist) in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character. A foil's complementary role may be emphasized by physical characteristics. A foil usually either differs drastically or is extremely similar but with key difference setting them apart. For example in Cervantes' Don Quixote, the thin, dreamy and impractical Quixote contrasts both in body and personality with his companion, the fat, realistic and practical Sancho Panza. Another popular fictional character, Sherlock Holmes, is tall and lean; his right-hand man Doctor Watson, meanwhile, is often described as "middle-sized, strongly built." Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay from A Tale of Two Cities are also considered classic foils, though ironically they look exactly alike. The "straight man" in a comedy duo is a comic foil. While the straight man portrays a reasonable and serious character, the other portrays a funny, dumb, or simply unorthodox one.
Foil may refer to:
Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic (pronunciation: /ˈjæŋkəvɪk/; born October 23, 1959) is an American singer-songwriter, music producer, accordionist, actor, comedian, writer, satirist, and parodist. Yankovic is known for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and that often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts. Since his first-aired comedy song in 1976, he has sold more than 12 million albums (as of 2007), recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards among nine nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States. Yankovic's first top ten Billboard album (Straight Outta Lynwood) and single ("White & Nerdy") were both released in 2006, nearly three decades into his career.
Yankovic's success comes in part from his effective use of music video to further parody popular culture, the song's original artist, and the original music videos themselves, scene-for-scene in some cases. He directed later videos himself and went on to direct for other artists including Ben Folds, Hanson, Black Crowes, and The Presidents of the United States of America. In addition to recording his albums, Yankovic wrote and starred in the film, UHF, and television show, The Weird Al Show. He has also made guest appearances on many television shows, in addition to starring in Al TV specials on MTV.
