Fort Pierce is a city in and the county seat of St. Lucie County, Florida, United States. It is also known as the Sunrise City, sister to San Francisco, California, the Sunset City. The population was 41,590 at the 2010 census. As of 2012, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 42,645. It is named after the army installation of Fort Pierce built in the area in 1838 during the Second Seminole War.
Fort Pierce was awarded the 2005 City of Excellence Award by the Florida League of Cities for overall excellence in city government and in 2011, Main Street Fort Pierce, Inc. received the Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in downtown.
During the city's centennial celebration, a time capsule was installed in the lobby of the city hall. This time capsule has an attractive sculpture atop of it.
Fort Pierce is located at 27°26′20″N 80°20′8″W / 27.43889°N 80.33556°W / 27.43889; -80.33556 (27.438817, -80.335471).
Fortifications are military constructions or buildings designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and also used to solidify rule in a region during peace time. Humans have constructed defensive works for many thousands of years, in a variety of increasingly complex designs. The term is derived from the Latin fortis ("strong") and facere ("to make").
From very early history to modern times, walls have been a necessity for cities to survive in an ever changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley Civilization were the first small cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae (famous for the huge stone blocks of its 'cyclopean' walls). A Greek Phrourion was a fortified collection of buildings used as a military garrison, and is the equivalent of the Roman castellum or English fortress. These construction mainly served the purpose of a watch tower, to guard certain roads, passes, and lands that might threaten the kingdom. Though smaller than a real fortress, they acted as a border guard rather than a real strongpoint to watch and maintain the border.

This incredible DJI Mavic Pro drone footage shows sharks approaching surfers and paddle boarders near the Fort Pierce Inlet in Fort Pierce, Florida. At one point a big shark nearly attacks a smaller shark right next to a surfer!! We spoke to some of the surfers and they were not even aware that there were sharks right next to them! This is interesting because as we brought the drone closer to the water we would lose sight of the sharks as well due to the glare, etc. Follow Us on Social Media for more shark videos and other great videos: https://www.instagram.com/hydrophilik/ https://twitter.com/Hydrophilik1 https://www.facebook.com/Hydrophilik-1005920486204049/
7/14/12- Ft. Pierce Free Dive Open, at approx. 0645 we had a close encounter with a great white in 130 ft of water, approx. 10-12 miles east of Ft. Pierce inlet. One diver , Eros, was in the water untangling himself from his float line when this 12-14 ft. beast showed up. It circled the boat for 20-30 minutes before we decided to leave and dive closer inshore. We all made it safely back to the ramp, extremities intact, at the end of the day. Divers: Eros, Steve, Jeremy, and Ryan.
Fort Pierce is a favorite among Florida surfers. It's not uncommon to see birdwatchers, beachcombers and anglers here either. By boat, board, bike or foot, there's no wrong way to experience this coastal gem.
