'Young was born in Chicago on August 8 1900 into a very musical family his father being a member of one Joseph Sheehan’s touring Opera company. The young Victor began playing violin at the age of six and was sent to Poland when he was ten to stay with his grandfather and study at Warsaw Imperial Conservatory (his teacher was Polish composer Roman Statkowski) achieving the Diploma of Merit. He studied the piano with Isidor Philipp of the Paris Conservatory. While still a teenager he embarked on a career as a concert violinist with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Juliusz Wertheim assistant conductor in 1915–16. When he graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory the war prevented him from returning the US; so he remained in Poland which was occupied by the Germans earning his keep by playing with the Philharmonic in a quartet and a quintet and in between he gave lessons. His future wife Rita Kinel who met him in late 1918 used to smuggle food to him for he had neither enough money to buy it or time to eat it.He returned to Chicago in 1920 to join the orchestra at Central Park Casino. He then went to Los Angeles to join his Polish fiancée finding employment first as a fiddler in impresario Sid Grauman''s Million Dollar Theatre Orchestra then going on to be appointed concert-master for Paramount-Publix Theatres. After turning to popular music he worked for a while as violinist-arranger for Ted Fio Rito. In 1930 Chicago bandleader and radio-star Isham Jones commissioned Young to write a ballad instrumental of Hoagy Carmichael''s Stardust which had been played up until then as an up-tempo number. Young slowed it down and played the melody as a gorgeous romantic violin solo which inspired Mitchell Parish to write lyrics for what then became a much performed love song. In the mid-1930s he moved to Hollywood where he concentrated on films recordings of light music and providing backing for popular singers including Bing Crosby. His composer credits include When I Fall in Love Blue Star (The ''Medic'' Theme) Moonlight Serenade (Summer Love) from the motion picture The Star (1952) Sweet Sue Just You Can''t We Talk It Over Street of Dreams Love Letters Around the World My Foolish Heart Golden Earrings Stella by Starlight Delilah Johnny Guitar and I Don''t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You.'

Victor Young
Victor Young (August 8, 1900 – November 10, 1956) was an American composer, arranger, violinist and conductor. He was born in Chicago.
Biography
Young was born in Chicago on August 8, 1900, into a very musical family, his father being a member of one Joseph Sheehan’s touring Opera company. The young Victor began playing violin at the age of six, and was sent to Poland when he was ten to stay with his grandfather and study at Warsaw Imperial Conservatory (his teacher was Polish composer Roman Statkowski), achieving the Diploma of Merit. He studied the piano with Isidor Philipp of the Paris Conservatory. While still a teenager he embarked on a career as a concert violinist with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Juliusz Wertheim, assistant conductor in 1915–16.
Playing before Russian generals and nobles, while in Warsaw, he was later introduced to Czar Nicholas in St. Petersburg, and his playing so impressed the Czar that he presented him with many gifts but the revolution cut short his success in Russia. Having been connected with the court of the Czar, the Bolsheviks deemed it advisable to get rid of him, and it is only by a miracle that he escaped death, for he was already sentenced to die. After a long and tiresome escapade, he succeeded in reaching Warsaw, then Paris, and from there to the United States.

'Young was born in Chicago on August 8 1900 into a very musical family his father being a member of one Joseph Sheehan’s touring Opera company. The young Victor began playing violin at the age of six and was sent to Poland when he was ten to stay with his grandfather and study at Warsaw Imperial Conservatory (his teacher was Polish composer Roman Statkowski) achieving the Diploma of Merit. He studied the piano with Isidor Philipp of the Paris Conservatory. While still a teenager he embarked on a career as a concert violinist with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Juliusz Wertheim assistant conductor in 1915–16. When he graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory the war prevented him from returning the US; so he remained in Poland which was occupied by the Germans earning his keep by playing with t...

He then went to Los Angeles to join his Polish fiancée finding employment first as a fiddler in impresario Sid Grauman''s Million Dollar Theatre Orchestra then going on to be appointed concert-master for Paramount-Publix Theatres. After turning to popular music he worked for a while as violinist-arranger for Ted Fio Rito. In 1930 Chicago bandleader and radio-star Isham Jones commissioned Young to write a ballad instrumental of Hoagy Carmichael''s Stardust which had been played up until then as an up-tempo number. Young slowed it down and played the melody as a gorgeous romantic violin solo which inspired Mitchell Parish to write lyrics for what then became a much performed love song. In the mid-1930s he moved to Hollywood where he concentrated on films recordings of light music and providing backing for popular singers including Bing Crosby. Perez started training as a boxer at age 14 along with his older brother Benjamin "Kid" Perez Perez rose to great fame via the help and guidance of Leon Bellier and had a brief relationship with French-Italian actress Mireille Balin. The 5'1", 110-pound Perez won the International Boxing Union's version of the World Flyweight crown with a 2nd-round knockout of American champion Frankie Genaro, ergo becoming the youngest world champion in boxing history ! Perez was arrested in Paris on September 21, 1943 and detained in the Drancy internment camp France, before being transported to Auschwitz where he was assigned to the Monowitz to serve as a slave laborer Victor Perez arrived at Auschwitz on October 10, 1943, as part of "Transport 60" a group of 1,000. He was held in AuschwitzIII/Monowitz. Whilst there he was forced to participate in boxing matches for the amusement of the Nazis. By 1945. Victor had survived 140 bouts in 15 months and won 139 !! Perez was one of the prisoners on the "Death March that left the camp on January 18, 1945.

I'm on holiday with the family right now (and LOVING it!), but, I really didn't want to skip a week and not send you anything... so, I thought I'd treat you to something I usually keep only for members of the membership here at SBL.

Just over a year ago, Victor Wooten swung by SBL Towers... and obviously we grabbed a camera and filmed an entire interview with him while he was here!
As you'd expect, he dropped some serious knowledge bombs such as;
- How he picked up the bass aged two and was playing live at the ripe
old age of six!
- How he was tutored by his four brothers, particularly his guitar-
playing brother Regi.
- How he learned to tap by listening to Stanley Jordan.
- About his collaboration with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller under

'Young was born in Chicago on August 8 1900 into a very musical family his father being a member of one Joseph Sheehan’s touring Opera company. The young Victor began playing violin at the age of six and was sent to Poland when he was ten to stay with his grandfather and study at Warsaw Imperial Conservatory (his teacher was Polish composer Roman Statkowski) achieving the Diploma of Merit. He studied the piano with Isidor Philipp of the Paris Conservatory. While still a teenager he embarked on a career as a concert violinist with the Warsaw Philharmonic under Juliusz Wertheim assistant conductor in 1915–16. When he graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory the war prevented him from returning the US; so he remained in Poland which was occupied by the Germans earning his keep by playing with t...

He then went to Los Angeles to join his Polish fiancée finding employment first as a fiddler in impresario Sid Grauman''s Million Dollar Theatre Orchestra then going on to be appointed concert-master for Paramount-Publix Theatres. After turning to popular music he worked for a while as violinist-arranger for Ted Fio Rito. In 1930 Chicago bandleader and radio-star Isham Jones commissioned Young to write a ballad instrumental of Hoagy Carmichael''s Stardust which had been played up until then as an up-tempo number. Young slowed it down and played the melody as a gorgeous romantic violin solo which inspired Mitchell Parish to write lyrics for what then became a much performed love song. In the mid-1930s he moved to Hollywood where he concentrated on films recordings of light music and providing backing for popular singers including Bing Crosby. Victor "Young" Perez , tells the astonishing, harrowing and incredible moving story of a Tunisian Jewish boxer, who became the World Flyweight Champion in 1931 and 1932. Perez started training as a boxer at age 14 along with his older brother Benjamin "Kid" Perez Perez rose to great fame via the help and guidance of Leon Bellier and had a brief relationship with French-Italian actress Mireille Balin.
