Unless you either suffer from an allergy to politics or live under a rock, you've probably heard all about the Cruz-Trump feud, which came came to boil this week when the National Enquirer alleged that Ted Cruz-- the Bible-quoting, holier-than-thou Republican presidential candidate-- cheated on his wife, Heidi, not once, but multiple times with multiple women.
Cruz, of course, vehemently denied the accusations, and blamed Donald Trump and his staffers for "leaking" the story to the National Enquirer. At a news conference in Wisconsin on Friday, Cruz referred to the GOP front-runner as "Sleazy Donald" and insisted that the infidelity rumors were the brainchild of Trump and his former campaign adviser, Roger Stone.
Cruz then took to Facebook, posting:
I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage. For Donald J. Trump to enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low Donald won’t go. These smears are completely false, they’re offensive to Heidi and me, they’re offensive to our daughters, and they’re offensive to everyone Donald continues to personally attack. Donald Trump’s consistently disgraceful behavior is beneath the office we are seeking and we are not going to follow.
Trump, quite naturally, refuted having any involvement. In a Friday statement, Trump said:
"I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this week’s issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it, and have not, as yet, read it."
Trump's denial hasn't stopped Cruz from slamming "Sleazy Donald", however. Neither has the shocking revelation that the now-infamous National Enquirer story may have actually been leaked by a member of Team Rubio.
Yesterday, Breitbart News confirmed that they had received a video from "a Rubio ally", which showed Cruz routinely leaving a Washington hotel with an unnamed woman on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Breitbart chose not to run the story because the claims of infidelity could not be verified.
On Saturday afternoon, Huffington Post added fuel to the Marco Rubio claim, claiming that Rubio's opposition research team had been sitting on a "bombshell" since the March 15 Florida primary. According to Huffington Post senior media reporter Michael Calderone, Republican strategist and outspoken Rubio supporter Rick Wilson began dropping hints on Twitter, cryptically referring to the bombshell simply as "The Thing".
Wilson indicated that he was referencing a rumor that had been circulating around Washington for at least six months-- that Ted Cruz had an affair with Katrina Pearson, who is a former Cruz adviser and the current national spokesperson for the Trump campaign (Pearson denies the rumor). The Daily Beast also reported recently that no fewer than six Rubio allies were responsible for the smear.
These stories from multiple sources all seem to exonerate Trump, but if you expect Ted Cruz to formally apologize to the real estate mogul, don't hold your breath, since an apology does not appear to be forthcoming. Instead, Cruz has limited his Facebook activity to Easter-themed postings about "the light of Christ" and his memories of Pope John Paul II's first visit to Poland as Pope.
For Ted Cruz to pass judgment on "Sleazy" Donald Trump and then proceed to preach his warped brand of Christianity to his Facebook followers-- while mounting evidence clearly indicates that it was Team Rubio who circulated the adultery rumors-- speaks volumes about the true character (or lack thereof) of the Texas senator.
Like him or hate him, Donald Trump deserves an apology from Ted Cruz, plain and simple.
