Dedicated to his mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar-winner examines the mythic violence of the Western, taking on the ghosts of his own star past. Disgusted by Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett's decree that several ponies make up for a cowhand's slashing a whore's face, Big Whiskey prostitutes, led by fierce Strawberry Alice (Frances Fisher), take justice into their own hands and put a $1000 bounty on the lives of the perpetrators. Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like "justice." "I don't deserve this," pleads Little Bill. "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," growls Munny, simultaneously summing up the insanity of western violence and the legacy of Eastwood's Man With No Name.

Here's something to do. Re-watch the 1992 Academy Award Best Picture, Unforgiven, thinking about Afghanistan. I realize it was released a good ten years before we invaded, but still ...
I remember thinking at the time a bunch of stupid ideas about William Munny as an avenging fury ... some type of return of the repressed, the town's savagery and violence visited on it like a Nemesis out of Greek tragedy...
But what's really amazing to me is that somehow I didn't experience the ending as insane. William Munny rides into towns, kills a bunch of people, leaves and issues this warning on his way out of town:
You better bury Ned right!
You better not cut up nor otherwise harm no whores!
Or I'll come back and kill every one of you sons of bitches.
(Note the American flag behind him during this speech ... and the adoring look on the face of Delilah, the "cut whore" whose assault Munny was in town to avenge.)
And then we see him back on his pig farm in Kansas and then we learn he ends up selling dry goods in San Francisco.
Here's my memory of how I experienced the ending: I felt like the town had been chastened or taught a lesson or at least purged of some of those violent elements -- that they'd learn that if you sow seeds of violence, you reap a whirlwind and they'd be less inclined to casual violence in the future ...
But, of course, that's crazy. You can't roll into town, kill a bunch of people, issue a warning, then disappear and figure you've improved things. All that does is ratchet up the general level of chaos and violence. (Probably any solution that begins with "First, roll into town and kill a bunch of people ..." is probably doomed to failure from the get go.)
The weird thing is that I think that back in the 90's, we experienced it as ... I dunno ... a Robert Kaplan whack fantasy about how sometimes violence demands a violent response, savagery has to be countered with savagery. It's the same old story: that violence is purgative or redemptive, that society can be renewed by a bout of savage violence. And when I saw the movie back in 1992, that seemed like a sober truth, and not an insane and tired fantasy

Unforgiven is a 1992 American Western film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood with a screenplay written by David Webb Peoples. The film tells the story of William Munny, an aging outlaw and killer who takes on one more job years after he had hung up his guns and turned to farming. A dark Western that deals frankly with the uglier aspects of violence and the myth of the Old West, it stars Eastwood in the lead role, with Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris.
Eastwood dedicated the movie to deceased directors and mentors Don Siegel and Sergio Leone. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman), and Best Film Editing. Eastwood himself was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance, but he lost to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman. In 2004, Unforgiven was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The film was only the third western to win the Oscar for Best Picture following Cimarron (1931) and Dances With Wolves (1990).

Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like "justice." Here's something to do. Re-watch the 1992 Academy Award Best Picture, Unforgiven, thinking about Afghanistan. I realize it was released a good ten years before we invaded, but still ... I remember thinking at the time a bunch of stupid ideas about William Munny as an avenging fury ... some type of return of the repressed, the town's savagery and violence visited on it like a Nemesis out of Greek tragedy... But what's really amazing to me is that somehow I didn't experience the ending as insane. William Munny rides into towns, kills a bunch of people, leaves and issues this warning on his way out of town: You better bury Ned right! You better not cut up nor otherwise harm no whores! Or I'll come back and kill every one of you sons of bitches. (Note the American flag behind him during this speech ... and the adoring look on the face of Delilah, the "cut whore" whose assault Munny was in town to avenge.) And then we see him back on his pig farm in Kansas and then we learn he ends up selling dry goods in San Francisco. Here's my memory of how I experienced the ending: I felt like the town had been chastened or taught a lesson or at least purged of some of those violent elements -- that they'd learn that if you sow seeds of violence, you reap a whirlwind and they'd be less inclined to casual violence in the future ... But, of course, that's crazy. You can't roll into town, kill a bunch of people, issue a warning, then disappear and figure you've improved things. All that does is ratchet up the general level of chaos and violence. (Probably any solution that begins with "First, roll into town and kill a bunch of people ..." is probably doomed to failure from the get go.) The weird thing is that I think that back in the 90's, we experienced it as ... I dunno ... a Robert Kaplan whack fantasy about how sometimes violence demands a violent response, savagery has to be countered with savagery. It's the same old story: that violence is purgative or redemptive, that society can be renewed by a bout of savage violence. And when I saw the movie back in 1992, that seemed like a sober truth, and not an insane and tired fantasy -

Here's something to do. Re-watch the 1992 Academy Award Best Picture, Unforgiven, thinking about Afghanistan. I realize it was released a good ten years before we invaded, but still ... I remember thinking at the time a bunch of stupid ideas about William Munny as an avenging fury ... some type of return of the repressed, the town's savagery and violence visited on it like a Nemesis out of Greek tragedy... But what's really amazing to me is that somehow I didn't experience the ending as insane. Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like "justice." "I don't deserve this," pleads Little Bill. "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," growls Munny, simultaneously summing up the insanity of western violence and the legacy of Eastwood's Man With No Name.

Here's something to do. Re-watch the 1992 Academy Award Best Picture, Unforgiven, thinking about Afghanistan. I realize it was released a good ten years before we invaded, but still ...
I remember thinking at the time a bunch of stupid ideas about William Munny as an avenging fury ... some type of return of the repressed, the town's savagery and violence visited on it like a Nemesis out of Greek tragedy...
But what's really amazing to me is that somehow I didn't experience the ending as insane. William Munny rides into towns, kills a bunch of people, leaves and issues this warning on his way out of town:
You better bury Ned right!
You better not cut up nor otherwise harm no whores!
Or I'll come back and kill every one of you sons of bitches.
(Note the American flag behind him during this speech ... and the adoring look on the face of Delilah, the "cut whore" whose assault Munny was in town to avenge.)
And then we see him back on his pig farm in Kansas and then we learn he ends up selling dry goods in San Francisco.
Here's my memory of how I experienced the ending: I felt like the town had been chastened or taught a lesson or at least purged of some of those violent elements -- that they'd learn that if you sow seeds of violence, you reap a whirlwind and they'd be less inclined to casual violence in the future ...
But, of course, that's crazy. You can't roll into town, kill a bunch of people, issue a warning, then disappear and figure you've improved things. All that does is ratchet up the general level of chaos and violence. (Probably any solution that begins with "First, roll into town and kill a bunch of people ..." is probably doomed to failure from the get go.)
The weird thing is that I think that back in the 90's, we experienced it as ... I dunno ... a Robert Kaplan whack fantasy about how sometimes violence demands a violent response, savagery has to be countered with savagery. It's the same old story: that violence is purgative or redemptive, that society can be renewed by a bout of savage violence. And when I saw the movie back in 1992, that seemed like a sober truth, and not an insane and tired fantasy

Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like "justice." "I don't deserve this," pleads Little Bill. "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," growls Munny, simultaneously summing up the insanity of western violence and the legacy of Eastwood's Man With No Name.

‘Deadpool’ is the savior of superhero movies

It’s pretty appropriate that the final “Batman v Superman. Dawn of Justice” trailer hit the web the same day “Deadpool” snuck into theaters, before officially opening tomorrow ... Even the creative opening credits are likely to draw chuckles ... Westerns continued to be made, of course, but the most successful were those that put a different spin on the old formula, such as “Young Guns,” “City Slickers” and the Oscar-winning “Unforgiven.” ... ....
