Jonathan Michael Richman (born May 16, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. In 1970 he founded the Modern Lovers, an influential proto-punk band. Since the mid-1970s, Richman has worked either solo or with low-key, generally acoustic, backing. He is known for his wide-eyed, unaffected and childlike outlook, and music that, while rooted in rock and roll, is influenced by music from around the world.
Born in Natick, Massachusetts, into a Jewish family, Richman began playing music and writing his own songs in the mid-1960s. He became infatuated with the Velvet Underground, and in 1969 he moved to New York City, lived on the couch of their manager, Steve Sesnick, worked odd jobs and tried to break in as a professional musician. Failing at this, he returned to Boston.
While in Boston, Richman formed the Modern Lovers, a proto-punk garage rock band. Other notable members of the group were keyboard player Jerry Harrison and drummer David Robinson, who later joined Talking Heads and the Cars, respectively.
The Modern Lovers were an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 1970s and 1980s. The original band existed from 1970 to 1974 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later. It featured Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David Robinson (later of the Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads). The sound of the band owed a great deal to the influence of the Velvet Underground, and is now sometimes classed as "protopunk". It pointed the way towards much of the punk rock, new wave, alternative and indie rock music of later decades. Their only album, the eponymous The Modern Lovers, contained idiosyncratic songs about dating awkwardness, growing up in Massachusetts, and love of life and the USA.
Later, between 1976 and 1988, Richman used the name Modern Lovers for a variety of backing bands, always billed as "Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers". These bands were quieter and featured more low-key, often near-childlike songs as Richman drew on folk-rock and other genres. Out of Richman's original bandmates, only Robinson was part of any of the other Modern Lovers incarnations.

This recording surfaced as an acetate which are generally produced in very low quantity and often had hand written labels. It may have been made possibly for a promo or Jonathan was using this format much like recording to a cassette tape recorder. The intimacy of this recording makes it very charming and his loose performance is reminiscent to a practice in a bedroom or living room, hence these recordings became known as the Living Room Demos. There's an audience of two or three friends tops, Jonathan wanders from guitar to tambourine to acapella, repeating songs, extolling the virtues of playing solo and, at one point, asking someone take a telephone message for him. The music fills the gap between Richman's break-up from the Modern Lovers and post-76, the new version of the Modern Lover...
This is a home recording from Jonathan, circa 1974, that is essentially an audio love letter to a girl named, Laura. "This guy one time sent a mail in which he was explaining that he was a Jonathan fan and that it just happened that he was playing a Jonathan record when his girlfriend Laura said "Oh this sounds like Jonathan". And he said sure it is him and Laura told him she had never been aware he was a known singer. Because 25 years earlier he had been more or less dating her and had sent her at one point a cassette on which he was singing "singing in the rain".Being a true fan, he asked if she still had the tape and yes she did and brought it to him. Having discovered this treasure, he informed the jojo list. Someone immediately urged him to send her a copy of the tape, as she would t...

Interview and performance from Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers while appearing on The Cutting Edge.
Things were slow, a little slow
And I was at the kind of party
Where I said I wouldn't go
But in the mood, I stay
And then I didn't blush at all
At the scene I made.
Well, they're [Gm] all in my trance
When I dance
The way I move myself around
And they're all in my [Fm] trance
When I dance.
I'm not a pro, I'm not a pro
In fact I barely move at all
Compared to certain guys you know
But if you look and see
You'll see they won't watch them
The same way they watch me
And they're all in my trance
When I dance
The way I move myself around
And they're all in my trance
When I dance.
Well, when I dance that's passion
And when I dance that's love
And there's times I cause that attraction
Well then I don't try to start
I just don't try to stop
And I don't blush cause I like it like that
Things were slow, a little slow
And when they put on a record I didn't want to know
But soon I stood against my will
I heard an old time song and I could not sit still
And they're all in my trance
When I dance
The way I move myself around
And they're all in my trance
