The clash of races and religions, on the Fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth and sixth centuries AD, have been described as a Dark Age. In fact, the West created a truly new dark age in the Near and Middle East in the last 15 years. We also look at a new theory that, two centuries before Christ, the Jews spread their faith west all along the North African coast into Spain; and east through Syria to modern Russia.

The Textus Roffensis is more properly two distinct books, though written at about the same time, and largely by the same scribe, which were only bound together some time after 1300. The first part contains one of the most important of all surviving collections of Anglo-Saxon laws, from the conversion of King Aethelberht of Kent to the coronation charter of King Henry I of 1100.
The second part is the oldest and most precious of the cathedral registers. It can best be described as a memorandum book, created for ease of reference and security. Both parts were compiled in part from individual or single sheet original documents or exemplars, many now lost, in part from the collective memory of the cathedral community.
The compilation represents the first documentary evidence of the compromises made between the new Norman rulers and their indigenous English subjects, hinting at a convergence rather than a collision between the English language and English laws on the one hand and Romance laws and language on the other.
The book contains two foundation charters of Rochester Cathedral and Diocese of 604 (DRc/R1 f.119 recto - f.119 verso and DRc/R1 f.177 recto), two pre-Conquest and pre-Domesday Book lists of Kent parishes and copies of the earliest English law codes to survive (contained in part i of the book, i.e. the first of the two separate books prior to their being bound together).
The compilation dates from the episcopate of Ernulf of Bec (1115-1124) and more specifically from the period 1122-1123 (Hough, 2001) or 1123-1124 (Wormald, 2001). At that time there was little distinction between the possessions of the priory and the bishopric, and the bishop lived in the priory buildings with the monks. Ernulf’s involvement is commemorated on the first folio.
Both parts were written by a single scribe. Flight surmises it was the prior of the day, Ordwine. Wormald suggests he was a trusted servant of Bishop Ernulf (talk transcript, 2004). Whoever he was, he was no ordinary scribe and possessed advanced scholarly and editorial powers and was responsible for seeking out and ordering as well as transcribing the book’s contents.

Don't forget to hit the Like and Subscribe videos to make sure you receive notifications about upcoming Literature, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and World History lessons from MrBrayman.Info.
This video covers the Anglo-Saxon Period of British History as it relates to Old English Literature. It gives students background on the people who produced literature like Beowulf, The Wanderer, and other poems.
Below is the outline of the slides used in the lesson:
The Anglo-Saxon Period449-1066 CE
Created by the English Department, Coronado HS
England before the Anglo-Saxons:The Celts -- 900 BCE
Celtic speakers arrived in England in about 900 BCE
Two Tribes:
The Brythons, inhabited what is now Britain
The Gaels, settled in present day Ireland
The Celts -- 900 BCE
Both Celtic groups spoke languages from the Celtic family which is far different from Germanic languages. (English is considered a Germanic language.)
They lived in closely tied clans and were farmers and hunters for the most part.
The Celts -- 900 BCE
Their leaders were often Druids, who were priests.
The Druids preserved the people's myths and legends by reciting long, heroic poems.
The Romans = 55 BCE -- 407 CE
The next group to invade England was the Romans.
They ruled for some 300 years.
They established roads and towns that served the island for centuries.
The Romans = 55 BCE -- 407 CE
Their rule ended because Italy was under attack from northern invaders. Basically, the troops were called home.
The last troops left in 407, and the stage was set for Anglos and the Saxons.
They brought Christianity to the island.
The Anglo-Saxons = 449 - 1066
They were able to over take the Britons by simply rowing up English rivers.
Three groups: the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes.
The Anglo-Saxons = 449 - 1066
So where did the Britons go? Some went to the edges of the island -- Cornwall and Wales. Others went to Ireland and then later Scotland.
This movement proved to preserve the Celtic languages of Cornish, Welsh, and Irish and Scottish Gaelic. All of which are spoken today.
The Danish (Viking) Invasions
They took place between the 9th and 12th centuries.
English king Alfred the Great was able to resist the first invasion.
The Vikings ended up practicing "hit-and-run" raids, but their influence was not large.
Anglo-Saxon Hierarchy
King = he was expected to be generous to his loyal subjects
Thanes = claimed kinship to founder of tries. They were expected to be LOYAL.
The Mead Hall
The Anglo-Saxons = Religion
They came to Britain with their own pagan beliefs.
They had a firm belief in fate (wyrd).
They worshiped ancient Germanic gods like Tui, god of war and the sky; Woden, chief of the gods; and Fria, Woden's wife and goddess of the home.
The Anglo-Saxons = Religion
Christianity had been introduced by the Romans, and the Celts were converted.
Irish monks helped establish a strong Christian hold on the island.
Scots were converted easily, and many monasteries were built in Scotland.
The Anglo-Saxons = Religion
Roman cleric Saint Augustine arrives in 597.
Saint Augustine was able to convert King Ethelbert of Kent; this led to the kingdom being converted.
The Anglo-Saxons = Religion
The Church promoted peace, and that helped unite the English people.
The Church also brought education and a written literature.
Monks often worked as scribes, recording and duplicating written work by hand.
The Anglo-Saxons = Religion
Venerable Bede (673-735) = "The Father of English History"
He wrote A History of the English Church and People -- the clearest account of early Anglo-Saxon times.
Anglo-Saxon Literature
Spread by scops who recited long epic poems. These poems were either heroic or literary.
The verses were easy to memorize
Preliterate people
Characteristics of Anglo-Saxon Poetry
Caesuras -- pause in a line
Alliteration joins the 2 parts of the line
Kennings -- metaphorical phrases -- This is where they had their "stock epithet," a work of phrase characterizing a person or thing.
Reading Poetry -- Especially Narrative Poetry!!
Don't stop at the end of a line, stop at the punctuation mark.
The end of the line has to do with the "beat" of the line; it has nothing to do with the "meaning" of the line.
The Norman Conquest
By 1042, the Danes were out of power, and Edward the Confessor was on the throne.
Edward was very religious and had studied in Normandy, which is in France.
Edward died in 1066, and that year found the Normans overpower the Anglo-Saxons. This was their last defeat.

10. Barcelona - The city is a pioneer in smart city and low-carbon solutions.
9. Hong Kong - The city has also been a leader in the use and adoption of smart cards, which are already used by millions of residents for services like public transit, library access, building access, shopping, and car parks.
8. Copenhagen - The city has committed to carbon neutrality by 2025 and 40% of its citizens regularly commute via bicycle.
7. Berlin - Berlin is testing out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies in the hopes of creating a virtual power plant from electric vehicles.
6. Tokyo - The city will create a smart town in the suburbs in partnership with major industry. The eco-burb will contain homes that integrate solar panels, storage ba tteries, and energy efficient appliances all connected to a smart grid.
5. London - also scored relatively high across the board. London has been well-recognized for some of its sustainability innovations (i.e. congestion tax) and its robust transit system.
4. New York - New York scored higher than most other cities in the ranking in all of the categories except of quality of life, where it ranked a poor 47th. It has teamed with innovator IBM to help the city prevent fires and protect first responders as well as identify questionable tax refund claims--a move that is expected to save the city about $100 million over a five-year period.
3. Paris - Paris already has a highly successful bike sharing program, Velib, and just last month, its mayor launched a similar model for small EVs called Autolib.
2. Toronto - smartest city in NA, scored well across the board, it is an active member of the Clinton 40 (C40) megacities, which seek to transition to the low-carbon economy. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.
1. The smartest city in the world is Vienna - Vienna was the only city that ranked in the top 10 in every category. It is establishing bold smart-city targets and tracking their progress to reach these goals with programs like Smart Energy Vision 2050, Roadmap 2020, and Action Plan 2012-2015.
A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax, the capital of the province of Nova Scotia forms together with Dartmouth and Bedford a coherent settlement area for well over a quarter million people. Dartmouth and Halifax are separated by the harbor and since the mid 18th century connected by a ferry.
In addition, two major toll bridges span the bay.
Since time immemorial, Halifax is a major port and thus it is not surprising that the largest military installation in Canada, the base of the Atlantic Fleet and the headquarters of the Coast Guard are settled here.
In the center of the harbor front you see the restored brick buildings and warehouses, the so-called Historic Properties. Together with the disused harbor buildings, they serve today as pubs as well as shopping malls, museums and galleries for a solvent customers. The exterior of the whole complex is true to the original. The Historic Properties are a much-visited attraction for tourists. Here one can watch the ships as well as glass blowers at work.
In the shopping arcades, the usual souvenirs are offered to the tourists. Those who seek patiently can find some rarities.
Always present is the emblem of the town, the bell tower set up at the beginning of the 19th century in front of the citadel on behalf of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. It should teach the citizens more punctuality.
The casino with an attached hotel next to the Historic Properties dominates the northern part of the harbor front.
The historic Alexander Keith Brewery, another masterfully restored part of the leisure mile dominates the southern part.
Sometimes you can see the sailing ship Bluenose II in the harbor. In the early 20th century, the original Bluenose held the international fishing trophy as the fastest North American sailing ship in its class for eighteen years. During World War II sailing ships lost their meaning; the Bluenose at first still served as a cargo ship and sank in 1946 in the West Indies. In the 60s, the Bluenose II was rebuilt to the original in Lunenburg and is now immortalized on the Canadian 10 cent coin.
Weather permitting, you can take a city tour with one of the original amphibious vehicles, the Harbour Hopper.
