When I was an art student, I had Charles F. Stuckey's book, 'Monet: Water Lilies', on my coffee table. Twenty years later, I would meet Charles at the New York apartment of his neighbours, Dove Bradshaw and William Anastasi.
The next time I was in New York, I interviewed Charles. I was particularly interested in talking with him about Gustave Caillebotte's painting, 'Paris Street, Rainy Day', 1877, which hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago, where Charles once worked. In this interview, we also talk about writing art theory and criticism, as well as the work of Claude Monet, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.

Discovering a lost 15th-century city
Diana Newall used our amazing map collections to recreate the lost city of Candia, the 15th-century capital of Crete. Diana is an art historian and Associate Lecturer at the University of Kent, focusing on 15th-century travel and Mediterranean studies, and she has published several books. Candia was destroyed in the 20th century, but Diana was able to find images of the city in one of the earliest illustrated travel books, as well as beautiful old maps and panoramas.

Art history has historically been understood as the academic study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts, i.e. genre, design, format, and style. This includes the "major" arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture as well as the "minor" arts of ceramics, furniture, and other decorative objects.
As a term, art history (also history of art) encompasses several methods of studying the visual arts; in common usage referring to works of art and architecture. Aspects of the discipline overlap. As the art historian Ernst Gombrich once observed, "the field of art history [is] much like Caesar's Gaul, divided in three parts inhabited by three different, though not necessarily hostile tribes: (i) the connoisseurs, (ii) the critics, and (iii) the academic art historians".

Plot: From Cape Town with Love reveals the world and nature of the street artist. In the inner city, where gray buildings form part of a bland landscape, a community of graffiti writers and street artists rebel not only against the law and conventions but against dull public spaces and apathy. From Cape Town with Love takes a tour through the streets of Cape Town, introducing street art where it's at, or rather where it has been put. Beautiful and thought provoking images and text are (temporarily) displayed for all to see, designed to enlighten, inspire and contribute to the community... all are punishable by imprisonment and/or heavy fines. Through the different and dangerous processes of creation, the intent behind the 'malicious damage to property' is captured and debated. Artists, Graffiti writers, historians and government officials explain their views and policies. Between the paint and the concrete, there is a hidden world, a world of expression and community. A world that despite its reputation is not ruled by gangsters, hip hop and violence, but that supports, considers and inspires its occupants and outsiders alike. By journeying into this space and the community, through the experience and process of creating a work, the nature and intent of the street artist will emerge. Public space will never be the same again.

Discovering a lost 15th-century city Diana Newall used our amazing map collections to recreate the lost city of Candia, the 15th-century capital of Crete. Diana is an art historian and Associate Lecturer at the University of Kent, focusing on 15th-century travel and Mediterranean studies, and she has published several books. Candia was destroyed in the 20th century, but Diana was able to find images of the city in one of the earliest illustrated travel books, as well as beautiful old maps and panoramas. The Mystery of the Munich Nazi Art Trove
In February 2012, German authorities raided the apartment of 75-year-old collector Cornelius Gurlitt and seized 1,406 works of art, a spectacular trove with a value that has yet to be estimated. It includes works by Liebermann, Marc Chagall, Franz Marc, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Picasso and Henri Matisse, among others. There were also many prints and graphic works, which Gurlitt had kept in a cabinet. At the press conference, it was not clear what exactly the collector was being accused of. For art history majors, this is exciting news. No longer do we have to desperately hope some established curator will die, or, even worse, accept a rich, rewarding career in auto journalism. We can become national security advisors, like the one Ted Cruz has. In February 2012, German authorities raided the apartment of 75-year-old collector Cornelius Gurlitt and seized 1,406 works of art, a spectacular trove with a value that has yet to be estimated. It includes works by Liebermann, Marc Chagall, Franz Marc, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Picasso and Henri Matisse, among others. There were also many prints and graphic works, which Gurlitt had kept in a cabinet.
At the press conference, it was not clear what exactly the collector was being accused of. There is talk of tax evasion and embezzlement, but the legal framework for the authorities’ confiscation of the collection seems murky at best.
Gurlitt has been missing since the raid on his apartment. He inherited the massive, mysterious collection from his father, Hildebrand, an art historian, museum director and art dealer born in 1895. He was one of the men who helped establish modern art in Germany and who collaborated with the Nazis after 1933.
Cornelius was 23 when his father died in 1956. Relatives say the younger Gurlitt has never held a real job. He is a loner, they say, a man with no women in his life, who seeks beauty in art and avoids people. For a time, his only contact with his sister Benita, who died in 2012, was through letters.
Members of the family knew about the pictures he owned, but they saw nothing unusual about the son of a gallery owner inheriting artworks. They saw him occasionally, but not for many years. A relative says that the collection was Cornelius Gurlitt’s lifeblood. “What that little man from Schwabing had in his apartment shouldn’t go to any museum in the world,” the relative explains. They speak of him as if he were a phantom, someone taking revenge on mankind who doesn’t want to share his treasures with others — a man whose spectacular inheritance was both a blessing and a curse.
At the Augsburg press conference, too, Gurlitt remained a phantom. One of the officials said he wasn’t interested in the old man’s whereabouts. At times, it almost seems as if the officials would prefer to see Gurlitt disappear completely. That would make things a lot simpler.

For art history majors, this is exciting news. No longer do we have to desperately hope some established curator will die, or, even worse, accept a rich, rewarding career in auto journalism. We can become national security advisors, like the one Ted Cruz has.
The fellow art historian in question is Dr. Victoria Coates, who, admittedly, does have a PhD in Art History, as Esquire noted, where I only have a bachelor’s degree. Even so, we still have a lot in common: for example, I would have had a minor in Anthropology if only my school actually gave out minors, and she
“missed being a double-major in political science by one class credit.”
Stupid class credits, am I right? Of course I am. I get it.
See, I always felt there was a strong camaraderie among art history students in that almost none of us had a shot in hell of getting a job in the field we studied, which freed us to pursue other passions initially deemed not serious enough to study in school.
For me, that had to do with making art and writing/thinking/driving/obsessing about cars, and for Coates, it seems to have been national security. Either one is a great hobby to turn into a career.

Lars Bang Larsen is a professor at the Haute École d’Art et de Design in Geneva, and a research fellow at the University of Copenhagen, where he also received his PhD in art history. He has curated and co-curated group exhibitions, including A History of Irritated Material (Raven Row, London, 2010) and Believe Not Every Spirit, But Try the Spirits (MUMA, Melbourne, 2015). He is co-curator of the 32nd São Paulo Biennial (2016). Larsen’s books include The Model: Palle Nielsen’s “A Model for a Qualitative Society” (1968) (MACBA, 2010), and Networks (MIT Press, 2014).

Regine Rapp is an art historian and curator working in the fields of image/text theory, artist books, installation and art & science collaborations. Christian de Lutz is a visual artist and curator interested in technology and science. They are the directors of Art Laboratory Berlin which, co-founded in 2006, has produced over 35 exhibitions and numerous conferences, seminars, performances and workshops. Their talk The Biological Sublime in 21st Century Art focused on the fluid boundaries between visual arts, biology and the humanities with specific examples of art/science collaborations and new hybrid forms. artlaboratory-berlin.org
J.J. Hastings’ work focuses upon the intersection and interplay of art and science - from philosophy to praxis - merging scientific and artistic research. She holds advanced degrees in both Biology and Bioinformatics, and an MA Art & Science from Central Saint. Recent residencies include the Khoj Workshops in Delhi, SymbioticA in Perth, the Lumen Residency in Atina, Italy, and Ausstellingsraum Klingental in Basel. J.J. is also co-founder of the bio-creative consultancy The Kitchen with fellow CSM alumna and materials designer Amy Congdon, as well as a member of both the Lumen and London Alternative Photography Collectives. From the studio to the factory to the table top: ceramics in a changing world Making pots in studio was once cast as a form of creative opposition to the ceramic factory. Studio potters sought to restore a varied set of values to ceramic production – from the ‘born not made’ aesthetic of Yanagi Soetsu, Bernard Leach and Katharine Pleydell Bouverie to the sculptural ambitiousness of figures like Peter Voulkos, Viola Frey and Gwynn Hanssen Pigott. By the 1990s, however, the factory became a site of increased attraction to potters. Much industrial ceramic production shifted to the Far East, in itself a kind of homecoming. To represent these dates, they used glyphs and symbols including a dot to stand for the numeral one, a bar to stand for the numeral five, and a shell motif to stand for zero. The first known Mayan zero, carved on a stone stela at Uaxactun, Mexico, dates to AD 357. Why Maya scribes recorded these dates and how they visualized and used the zero have been the focus of Anna Blume's archaeological and ethnohistorical research for the past eight years.
This event is paired with a lecture by artist Josiah McElheny presented on November 16, 2010.
Anna Blume has taught at a number of art colleges in New York, including The Cooper Union, Parsons The New School for School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts. She is currently an associate professor of the history of art at the State University of New York (FIT). Her research ranges from sixth-century sandstone carved temples in western India to ninth-century Maya numerical notations carved into limestone stelae. Blume received her PhD in the History of Art from Yale University in 1997. Supported by the Ford Foundation, the State University of New York, and the American Philosophical Society, her research on Mayan concepts of zero is forthcoming in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society.

A journey through the dramatic and destructive years of the French Revolution, telling its history in a way not seen before - through the extraordinary story of its art. Our guide through this turbulent decade is the constantly surprising Dr Richard Clay, an art historian who has spent his life decoding the symbols of power and authority.
Dr Clay has always been fascinated by vandalism and iconoclasm, and believes much of the untold story of the French Revolution can be discovered through the stories of great moments of destruction. Who were the stone masons in the crowd outside Notre Dame that pulled down the statues of kings? Why do the churches of Paris still carry all the coded signs of anti-Christian state legislation? What does it mean, and who was carrying this out?

Making pots in studio was once cast as a form of creative opposition to the ceramic factory. Studio potters sought to restore a varied set of values to ceramic production – from the ‘born not made’ aesthetic of Yanagi Soetsu, Bernard Leach and Katharine Pleydell Bouverie to the sculptural ambitiousness of figures like Peter Voulkos, Viola Frey and Gwynn Hanssen Pigott. By the 1990s, however, the factory became a site of increased attraction to potters. Much industrial ceramic production shifted to the Far East, in itself a kind of homecoming. Perhaps that is why the factory is currently an exotic place of wonder and experimentation for studio ceramicists. Meanwhile, within the art world clay is recognised as a medium in which to celebrate the handmade at its most immediate and inchoate. In a world of expensive, contested and often poisonous materials, ceramic production has retained a kind of primordial innocence where ideas about utopian creativity can be investigated.
Stepping Up, running in Canberra from 9 to 12 July 2015, is an internationally renowned arts event, bringing together some of the best speakers, demonstrators and delegates from ceramics and craft communities around the world.

A detachment of US Marines has been dispatched to Iraq to join the ground fight against ISIS. The Marines sent are from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), an air-ground fighting force of 2,200 soldiers. However, it is not clear how many of these soldiers will actually be deployed to Iraq. There are around 3,600 US army personnel already stationed in Iraq ...
