Parasitism

In biology/ecology, parasitism is a non-mutual symbiotic relationship between species, where one species, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the other, the host. Traditionally parasite (in biological usage) referred primarily to organisms visible to the naked eye, or macroparasites (such as helminths). Parasite can include microparasites, which are typically smaller, such as protozoa,viruses, and bacteria. Examples of parasites include the plants mistletoe and cuscuta, and animals such as hookworms.

Unlike predators, parasites typically do not kill their host, are generally much smaller than their host, and will often live in or on their host for an extended period. Both are special cases of consumer-resource interactions. Parasites show a high degree of specialization, and reproduce at a faster rate than their hosts. Classic examples of parasitism include interactions between vertebrate hosts and tapeworms, flukes, the Plasmodium species, and fleas. Parasitism differs from the parasitoid relationship in that parasitoids generally kill their hosts.

Loa loa filariasis

Loa loa filariasis (also known as loiasis, loaiasis, Calabar swellings, fugitive swelling, tropical swelling and African eyeworm) is a skin and eye disease caused by the nematode worm Loa loa. Humans contract this disease through the bite of a deer fly or mango fly (Chrysops spp), the vectors for Loa loa. The adult Loa loa filarial worm migrates throughout the subcutaneous tissues of humans, occasionally crossing into subconjunctival tissues of the eye where it can be easily observed. Loa loa does not normally affect one's vision but can be painful when moving about the eyeball or across the bridge of the nose. The disease can cause red itchy swellings below the skin called "Calabar swellings". The disease is treated with the drug diethylcarbamazine (DEC), and when appropriate, surgical methods may be employed to remove adult worms from the conjunctiva.

As the interview begins in his limousine, Andre recalls his lowest point, when he was in Houston in 2003 and met Jazzy Dee, who supplied him with drugs, alcohol and women. Yet after Jazzy refused to pay the women, they contended they were raped, leading to Andre's arrest.

Scientists believe this parasite is comprised of anywhere between 350 to 2,000 different subspecies. While horsehair worms do not pose any direct threat to humans, they do pose an interestingly unique & specific danger towards crickets. They hatch as larvae at the bottom of a creek, stream, or puddle, then wait to be eaten by a cricket. Once consumed, the horsehair worm will navigate its way into the cricket's body cavity, where it absorbs nutrients from the cricket. As soon as this parasite breaks free, it coaxes the cricket into drowning itself so the horsehair worm can fully emerge. After leaving the dead cricket, it then finds a mate, who helps it reproduce by laying eggs. The male worm dies & the deadly cycle continues. 8: Roundworms Roundworms are parasites responsible for causing a disease in humans known as filariasis. Carried by flies & mosquitos, they infect one's bloodstream with the potential to reach the lymphatic system, causing the body parts (such as your limbs & genitals) to swell up well beyond their normal size. The skin will also become thick & painful as a result of infection. Roundworm-induced filariasis affects close to 1 billion people in 80 countries throughout the world. Fortunately, this condition is treatable through the use of oral drugs such as Diethylcarbamazine, which kills off the infection & prevents further transmission to other people. 7: The Tsetse Fly Found in Africa, the tsetse fly is one of the main causes of trypanosomiasis, or African sleeping sickness. This parasitic disease affects roughly 10 million people & is most common in more rural areas. Symptoms include headaches, fever, joint pain, poor coordination, confusion, muscle weakness, paralysis of the limbs, & trouble sleeping. It can eventually prove fatal if treatment is not sought, causing death due to eventual organ failure. While the disease has been present in Africa for thousands of years, the death rate has decreased in recent years due to advances in modern medicine. In 1990, for example, about 34,000 people died from African sleeping sickness, which is close to four times higher than its current death rate of 9,000 people per year. 6: The Emerald Jewel Wasp Also known as the “emerald cockroach,” the emerald jewel is known for paralyzing cockroaches in order to use them for their larvae. They're native to South Asia as well as parts of Africa & the Pacific islands, where they paralyze cockroaches with their sting then lead them to their nest trap in a burrow. Here, the emerald jewel proceeds to lay its eggs inside the roach's abdomen. Over a period of about 10 days, the wasp controls the amount of venom injected into its victim in order to keep it alive, all the while allowing its larvae to feed off the roach's organs. Controlling the venom is important as too much venom will kill the cockroach while too little will allow it to make a full recovery. Wasps keep the roaches alive in order to feast off their bodies & harvest their own eggs. A cocoon is then formed here, where eventually, a full-grown wasp is born. It is at this point that the cockroach finally dies. 5: The Loa Loa Commonly referred to as the “eye worm,” the loa loa is one of the main causes of a condition known as loa loa filariasis, which is both a skin & eye disease. This creature has a clever strategy: It lays its eggs in mosquitoes and ticks, which feed on human blood. When these bloodsuckers feed, they leave an itch along with a mass of tiny larvae that dig a hole into the host’s skin. The larvae then incubate for 10 weeks and breathe through a hole tunnelled through the host’s skin. If the larvae reach maturation, they eventually exit the body. If not infections can form requiring surgery to remove the larvae. #6 … The Guinea Worm -- This parasite is contracted by drinking dirty water infected by fleas containing the worm’s larvae. The parasites may produce no symptoms for up to a year, but during that time it’s actually mating and reproducing inside the host’s stomach. As a blister forms, the host experiences burning pain, rashes and fever; symptoms that the worm is migrating. Once a blister pops, the female Guinea Worm will try and release her larvae through the break in the skin. Many people have been infected with more than one worm at a time, and the only way to remove it is by winding it around a stick. If the worm dies in the host’s body, arthritis, or even paralysis may occur. #5 … Filarial (fill-arr-ee-ul) Worm -- This parasite is spread by bites from black flies or mosquitoes. It causes Filariasis (fil-ar-I-as-is) which is actually a collection of diseases all of which have serious complications. Living inside the human body, these worms produce infections that can cause river blindness and elephantiasis (elephant-I-as-is). Elephantiasis can cause painful, extreme swelling and thickening of the skin, often in the arms and legs. This disease accounts for almost 40 million disfigurements around the world and can arguably be called an epidemic. #4 … Ascarid (Ass-car-id) Worms -- This parasite can affect humans after consuming food or water that’s been contaminated with fecal matter. From the stomach, the worms chew their way from the intestines to the lungs, causing pneumonia which can be fatal to some hosts. Most people will be affected with a nagging cough, which can produce phlegm with the worms inside. If the host spits out the infected phlegm the creatures will simply die. If the host swallows the infected phlegm, the now-mature worms will travel back to the stomach, which is where they started. Why the worms follow this route is still one of nature’s mysteries. FYI: One in four humans are infected with these worms. Thought you’d like to know. #3 … Loa Loa -- As you can see from the disturbing photo, the Loa Loa is a worm that you can feel squirming around your eyeball. The bite of certain types of flies is how this parasite is usually received. It can leave skin ulcers as it migrates from place to place on the body, but it always heads for the eyes … as they say, the eyes have it! This worm can live up to 17 years in a human body, if untreated. But as horrible as the Loa Loa looks and sounds, minor surgery or antibiotics provides an easy cure for the infection. #2 … Vampire Fish -- It’s known as a vampire fish, for good reason. This is a tiny catfish that latches onto larger fish to drink their blood. This creature is attracted by ammonia. And guess what humans release when urinating? Ammonia. This parasite can follow the scent of ammonia right into the human urethra where it attaches its razor-sharp spine and start drinking blood. This has happened while humans were attempting to use the Amazon River as a urinal. It’s as painful as it sounds and the surgery required to remove it is a humbling experience to say the least. #1 … Brain-Eating Parasite/Naegleria Fowleri (Nigh-ag-la-ree-a- Foul-a-ree) -- Although it’s a relative newcomer, this parasite has quickly made a name for itself as one of the deadliest parasites in the world. It is literally a brain-eating amoeba! This creature inhabits water, and will enter the body through the nose. It starts eating brain tissue within a week of entering the host. Symptoms include vomiting, fever and hallucinations, which quickly lead to respiratory failures, seizures and death. This parasite has killed people all over the world with a mortality rate of 95%
