A percussion instrument is a musical instrument that is sounded by being struck or scraped by a beater (including attached or enclosed beaters or rattles), or struck, scraped or rubbed by hand, or struck against another similar instrument. The percussion family is believed to include the oldest musical instruments.
The percussion section of an orchestra, however, traditionally contains in addition many instruments that are not, strictly speaking, percussion, such as whistles and sirens. On the other hand, keyboard instruments such as the celesta are not normally part of the percussion section, but keyboard percussion instruments (which do not have keyboards) are included.
Percussion instruments are most commonly divided into two classes: Tuned percussion instruments, which produce notes with an identifiable pitch, and untuned percussion instruments, which produce notes without an identifiable pitch.
Hornbostel–Sachs has no high-level section for percussion. Most percussion instruments (as the term is normally understood) are classified as idiophones and membranophones. However the term percussion is instead used at the lower levels of the Hornbostel–Sachs hierarchy, including to identify instruments struck either with a non-sonorous object (hand, stick, striker) or against a non-sonorous object (human body, the ground) as opposed to concussion which refers to instruments in which two or more complementary sonorous parts are struck against each other, and for other purposes. Kieran Hebden (born 1978, Putney, London) is a post-rock and electronic musician. Hebden first came to prominence as a member of the band Fridge before establishing himself as a solo artist under the moniker of Four Tet.
Hebden's music typically eschews the traditional pop song format in favour of a more abstract approach—his sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation.
Alongside recording his own material, Hebden has also performed remixes for a number of artists including Aphex Twin, Anti-Pop Consortium, Bonobo, Beth Orton, Born Ruffians, Explosions in the Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Matthew Dear, Sia, Nathan Fake, Bloc Party, Andrew Bird, Kings of Convenience, Battles, Juana Molina, Madvillain, The xx, Foals, and Black Sabbath, as well as producing two albums by psychedelic improvisational group Sunburned Hand of the Man. Hebden's recent output includes a number of improvisational works with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid and collaborations with both Burial and Thom Yorke.

Plot: "A movement between the tranquility" The "Wie das Gefäß läuft es aus (It's empty like the vessel)" is a ceremony for meditation to enter into Toa or Nirvana. This film/video was inspired by the 4th chapter - "The Tao is an empty vessel; ..." of Toa Te Ching (by Lau-tzu). In this work, the culture of Eastern Asia will be interpreted newly in multimedia contents and in digital expression through immersed image and sound. Generally, a purpose of vessel put in something and it should be emptied itself. But if it is already fulled by something, it is not worth any more. It should be become every moment newly, otherwise some of the inside of vessel will be spoiled. Also, a man be born again every moment through this ceremony. When he is reached for a tranquil heart through the process, he will be recognized himself and attained Nirvana. The theme is "A movement between the tranquility". The sound expresses the movement between the tranquility. Also, the image shows the tranquility in the movement. Finally, it shows the process of attaining the Toa (Nirvana) through the medium between the sound and image.

A l'occasion du 500e anniversaire de l'éloge de la folie d'Erasme et des 50 ans de la publication de l'Histoire de la folie de Michel Foucault ; la Cie Onstap a décidé d'organiser un évènement plus fou que de raison : un Flash-Mob géant de Step ! Membre de la grande famille des « cultures urbaines », le step, discipl...ine jubilatoire conciliant esthétisme et précision du geste, consiste à utiliser son corps comme instrument de percussion.
Une part de Folie existe en chacun d'entre nous : profitez du Festival d'Avignon pour venir l'exprimer au rythme de votre corps et surprenez la foule présente!
RDV le Dimanche 17 juillet à 17h au Centre de loisirs de la Barthelasse (à coté de la piscine, en face du Pont d'Avignon) pour une répétition générale. La performance aura lieu ailleurs à 19h, dans un lieu que seuls les participants connaitront.

La troupe des Rythmopathes a été créée en 2006, à l'initiative de Fred Dongey et d'une joyeuse bande de passionnés... Danseurs, musiciens, percussionnistes et chanteurs la composent. Les membres de cette compagnie viennent tous d'horizons divers et ont des approches techniques variées. Ils ont pour ambition de former un laboratoire de brassage des différents univers rythmiques connus et en devenir. Leur démarche est motivée par l'envie de créer un spectacle, vivant, vibrant, énergisant et de développer un langage rythmique, tant instrumental, vocal que corporel.
Ce spectacle, décalé, burlesque, est la rencontre entre gumboots, chants, percussions et danses : une fusion entre musiques et chants traditionnels et actuels. Les Rythmopathes vous entraînent dans leur monde, révélé par des chants traditionnels, danses atypiques, percussions colorées, gumboots, personnages clownesques... et vous communiqueront une bonne humeur et une énergie contagieuse !!!

This new composition is written for one marimbist and two percussionists and the duration is around 50 minutes includes nine (9) contrast movements.
The work tries to combine different music styles as well as the composer wants to break through his own compositional technique, bring the audience in a new musical sensation.

Au-delà de la technique, les percussions sont également question de ressenti et de gestion de son corps.
Michaël, « BatMike », began learning music at the age of 6. Volunteer teacher from the early age of 15 and then began playing in various bands in the Nord Pas de Calais region - Rock, Rai, Jazz... After a curriculum in Agostini schools - drum schools, he left school and started practising intensively in live conditions. Members of several bands: Om Mani, Demians and Hacride, with whom he toured across Europe, Asia, Scandinavian countries and Africa. He recorded several albums and was still brushing up his teaching skills. Founder of the « Bat'School », at the same time, he formed "les tambours du fenua", an urban and body percussion ensemble designed to show the rhythms to people by using everyday objects.
The ensemble helps develop all five senses, team spirit while enjoying the surprising world that surrounds us every day. That is the purpose of tambours du fenua.

Cette oeuvre, qui commence par les actes primitifs de la Percussion et du Cri, se poursuit en deuxième partie par la négation de ce même acte. Ici, l'acte de percuter est très limité. Ne pourrait-on percevoir la sérénité de l'Ame dans la vibration continue des instruments ? Le Noir de l'Etoile est dédié à mon fils Raphaël affectueusement et aux Percussions de Strasbourg Lorsqu'en 1985, je rencontrai à Berkeley l'astronome et cosmologiste Jo Silk, il me fit découvrir les sons des pulsars. Je fus séduit par ceux du pulsar de Véla et immédiatement, je me demandai à la manière de Picasso ramassant une vieille selle de bicyclette : « Que pourrais-je bien en faire ? ». About half this video focuses on layering snares and while I wanted to edit some of the "journey" to a good snare for the sake of having a shorter video, I think it's important to show the process of finding good sounds. This wasn't scripted so I apologize in advance for any repetitive and/or odd word choices, you know :)
My sample library was censored on purpose to encourage people to find their own. However, all samples and loops used in this video come from the Vengeance sound library, primarily:

Cette oeuvre, qui commence par les actes primitifs de la Percussion et du Cri, se poursuit en deuxième partie par la négation de ce même acte. Ici, l'acte de percuter est très limité. Ne pourrait-on percevoir la sérénité de l'Ame dans la vibration continue des instruments ?
De loin en loin, on entend à peine les tambours de la fête populaire, comme si les hommes se rejoignaient en frappant eux-mêmes les instruments et réalisaient ainsi le chant du souffle de vie.

Lorsqu'en 1985, je rencontrai à Berkeley l'astronome et cosmologiste Jo Silk, il me fit découvrir les sons des pulsars. Je fus séduit par ceux du pulsar de Véla et immédiatement, je me demandai à la manière de Picasso ramassant une vieille selle de bicyclette : « Que pourrais-je bien en faire ? ».
La réponse vint lentement : les intégrer dans une oeuvre musicale sans les manipuler, les laisser exister simplement comme des points de repère au sein d'une musique qui en serait en quelque sorte l'écrin ou la scène, enfin utiliser leurs fréquences comme tempi et développer les idées de rotation, de périodicité, de ralentissement, d'accélération et de « glitches » que l'étude des pulsars suggère aux astronomes. La percussion s'imposait parce que comme les pulsars, elle est primordiale et implacable, et comme eux cerne et mesure le temps, non sans austérité. Enfin, je décidai de réduire l'instrumentarium aux peaux et métaux à l'exclusion des claviers.
Le Noir de l'Etoile était né ou presque... Il restait à imaginer un complément lumineux de la partition, à élaborer une scénographie, à convaincre la communauté des astronomes de Nançay de transmettre un pulsar dans une salle de concert, enfin à réunir une équipe qui fût autant que moi passionnée par le projet.
Lorsque la musique parvient à conjurer le temps, elle se trouve investie d'un véritable pouvoir chamanique, celui de nous relier aux forces qui nous entourent. Dans les civilisations passées, les rites lunaires ou solaires avaient une fonction de conjuration. Grâce à eux, les saisons pouvaient revenir et le soleil se lever chaque jour. Qu'en est-il de nos pulsars ? Pourquoi les faire venir ici, aujourd'hui à l'heure où leurs passages dans le ciel boréal les rend accessibles ?
Bien sûr, nous savons ou croyons savoir qu'avec ou sans nous, 0359-54 et le pulsar de Véla continueront leurs rondes interminables et, indifférents, balayeront les espaces intersidéraux de leurs faisceaux d'ondes électromagnétiques. Mais n'est-ce pas en les piégeant dans un radiotélescope, puis en les intégrant dans un événement culturel et sophistiqué - le concert - qu'ils nous renvoient alors plus que leurs propres chants ?
En effet, le moment du passage d'un pulsar dans le ciel nous astreint à une date précise et en rivant le concert sur cette horloge lointaine, il devient un événement in situ, plus exactement in tempore donc relié aux rythmes cosmiques. Ainsi, les pulsars détermineront non seulement les différents tempi ou pulsations du Noir de l'Etoile, mais également la date et l'heure précise de son exécution.
Musique avec pulsar obligé !
Que l'on n'en déduise pas cependant que je suis un adepte de la musique des Sphères ! Il n'est d'autre Musique des Sphères que la Musique Intérieure.
Celle-là seule pulse encore plus violemment que nos pulsars et oblige de temps à autre un compositeur à rester à l'écoute.
Et je soulignerai en outre :
L'aspect inouï et irremplaçable de l'arrivée en direct dans le lieu du concert de ces impassibles horloges cosmiques qui ont franchi plusieurs années lumières...
Leur confrontation inattendue à une musique qui non seulement prépare leur « entrée » sur une scène musicale et théâtrale mais dont toute l'organisation temporelle provient de leur vitesse de rotation...
Leur intégration à une musique spatialisée par la position des six percussionnistes et des haut-parleurs autour des spectateurs...
La mise en scène et la mise en lumière de ces étoiles éteintes au moyen de projections et d'éclairages appropriés...

Le Noir de l'Etoile est dédié à mon fils Raphaël affectueusement et aux Percussions de Strasbourg
Lorsqu'en 1985, je rencontrai à Berkeley l'astronome et cosmologiste Jo Silk, il me fit découvrir les sons des pulsars. Je fus séduit par ceux du pulsar de Véla et immédiatement, je me demandai à la manière de Picasso ramassant une vieille selle de bicyclette : « Que pourrais-je bien en faire ? ».
La réponse vint lentement : les intégrer dans une oeuvre musicale sans les manipuler, les laisser exister simplement comme des points de repère au sein d'une musique qui en serait en quelque sorte l'écrin ou la scène, enfin utiliser leurs fréquences comme tempi et développer les idées de rotation, de périodicité, de ralentissement, d'accélération et de « glitches » que l'étude des pulsars suggère aux astronomes. La percussion s'imposait parce que comme les pulsars, elle est primordiale et implacable, et comme eux cerne et mesure le temps, non sans austérité. Enfin, je décidai de réduire l'instrumentarium aux peaux et métaux à l'exclusion des claviers.
Le Noir de l'Etoile était né ou presque... Il restait à imaginer un complément lumineux de la partition, à élaborer une scénographie, à convaincre la communauté des astronomes de Nançay de transmettre un pulsar dans une salle de concert, enfin à réunir une équipe qui fût autant que moi passionnée par le projet.
Lorsque la musique parvient à conjurer le temps, elle se trouve investie d'un véritable pouvoir chamanique, celui de nous relier aux forces qui nous entourent. Dans les civilisations passées, les rites lunaires ou solaires avaient une fonction de conjuration. Grâce à eux, les saisons pouvaient revenir et le soleil se lever chaque jour. Qu'en est-il de nos pulsars ? Pourquoi les faire venir ici, aujourd'hui à l'heure où leurs passages dans le ciel boréal les rend accessibles ?
Bien sûr, nous savons ou croyons savoir qu'avec ou sans nous, 0359-54 et le pulsar de Véla continueront leurs rondes interminables et, indifférents, balayeront les espaces intersidéraux de leurs faisceaux d'ondes électromagnétiques. Mais n'est-ce pas en les piégeant dans un radiotélescope, puis en les intégrant dans un événement culturel et sophistiqué - le concert - qu'ils nous renvoient alors plus que leurs propres chants ?
En effet, le moment du passage d'un pulsar dans le ciel nous astreint à une date précise et en rivant le concert sur cette horloge lointaine, il devient un événement in situ, plus exactement in tempore donc relié aux rythmes cosmiques. Ainsi, les pulsars détermineront non seulement les différents tempi ou pulsations du Noir de l'Etoile, mais également la date et l'heure précise de son exécution.
Musique avec pulsar obligé !
Que l'on n'en déduise pas cependant que je suis un adepte de la musique des Sphères ! Il n'est d'autre Musique des Sphères que la Musique Intérieure.
Celle-là seule pulse encore plus violemment que nos pulsars et oblige de temps à autre un compositeur à rester à l'écoute.
Et je soulignerai en outre :
L'aspect inouï et irremplaçable de l'arrivée en direct dans le lieu du concert de ces impassibles horloges cosmiques qui ont franchi plusieurs années lumières...
Leur confrontation inattendue à une musique qui non seulement prépare leur « entrée » sur une scène musicale et théâtrale mais dont toute l'organisation temporelle provient de leur vitesse de rotation...
Leur intégration à une musique spatialisée par la position des six percussionnistes et des haut-parleurs autour des spectateurs...
La mise en scène et la mise en lumière de ces étoiles éteintes au moyen de projections et d'éclairages appropriés...

Written to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the percussion ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Burning Bright borrows its title from William Blake’s famous poem The Tyger, published in 1794.
This incandescent poem celebrates the collision of opposites which gives the truest representation of the world and is the source of all creative power. The age-old conflict between “innocence” and “experience”, those “two contrary states of the human soul”, courses through all of Blake’s work, lending his poetry both its tragic aspect and its visionary tone. A non-conformist freethinker who was vehemently opposed to all forms of moral, theological or political oppression, Blake supported the French Revolution and denounced the enslavement of African-Americans. Despite his worldly engagements, he did not abandon his mystic quest, which – in the tradition of Dante and Milton – he considered the only feasible way of articulating the splendour of one’s inner illuminations. The wild and eruptive fury of his visions inspires fear and terror. Yet, from the abyss of misery, mankind can perceive the rise of a burning light, which indicates, without any promise, a possible alternative to the savage rule of force.
Composed as one single piece, like an immense adagio in the manner of Bruckner, Burning Bright’s poetic vision breaks with the traditional techniques of demarcation, with all its contours and closures. The music rises in layers, or unfolds in abundant and meandering surges. The varying depths of the timbres, fading towards an indeterminate horizon, create their own resonant space. Sounds – swelling, diffusing, writhing – blend like fluids or gases. Working on timbre is but the art of retouching. The drift of coloured masses replaces the interplay of formal arrangements beloved of the last century. Friction takes over from customary percussion techniques.
Following Blake’s example, Burning Bright rallies elementary energies: a drama with neither narrative nor anecdote, its unity emerges through telluric rumblings. Not unlike the films of Stanley Kubrick, it uncovers a vast space, which could well become, despite the hopes of our times, a space of eternal confinement.

The composition date given in the headnote is slightly misleading: yes, Bartók produced this effort in 1940, but it is an arrangement of the 1937 Sonata for 2 pianos and percussion. While for some time the chamber version may have been the preferred one, especially among critics, the orchestral rendition eventually became the more popular choice in concert halls and the recording studio.
Bartók had originally conceived the work for solo piano and percussion, but felt a second keyboard would supply sufficient sonic heft to provide the proper instrumental balances. Largely because of the work’s success at its debut on 16 January 1938, the composer decided to arrange it for orchestra, changing relatively small portions of the piano and percussion scoring.
- The first movement opens mysteriously (Assai lento), the pianos introducing the cryptic, terse main theme, or motif. As the music builds via intervallic accumulation, there are explosions from the percussion, and after an imaginative march-like episode on the pianos the tempo changes to Allegro molto. The colors brighten here and a brilliant, rhythmic theme, growing from the opening motif, is given by the pianos, later to be played colorfully by the xylophone. A second theme of less-aggressive character appears, and there follows an imaginative and complex development section. In the latter part of the first movement a brilliant fugue is given, wherein the piano writing is quite virtuosic, hands going in opposite directions on the keyboards, notes filling the air with tension and momentum. A dramatic coda, itself roiling in tension, closes the movement with emphatic resolution.
- The second movement is an elegy whose mesmerizing music, marked Lento ma non troppo, recalls the middle movement of the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1 from 1926 (uploaded on this channel), also a percussion-laden affair. The middle section here breaks from the elegiac mood of the opening and closing with agitated music, offering fine contrast to the nostalgic main theme.
- The third movement is a rondo, marked Allegro non troppo, that features two quite memorable themes. The first has an arched contour, rising and descending jovially on the keyboard, while the next one is presented emphatically by the xylophone, sounding humorous and intentionally stiff in its march-like manner. There is a brilliant but terse development of the main theme in a fugato episode, and the work ends with a subdued coda.
This concerto has attained a measure of popularity, but still remains largely on the fringes of the repertory, owing in part to the two-piano scoring. Relatively few virtuosos from any period devote their time to works like this unfortunately; this superlative performance by Freire and Argerich is one of the few.

Two British teenagers accused of battering an alcoholic woman to death in 2014 have been sentenced to life in prison. The two girls, now 15, were convicted of murdering 39-year-old Angela Wrightson on April 5 after an eight-week crown court trail in Leeds, England, the Guardian reported.
