Herewith, a second prediction. Republican wailing over his prospective nomination aside, Donald Trump could beat Hillary Clinton like a drum in November.

Today, as not just Irish-Americans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland itself is pluralist in religion, multicultural in urban areas, and has ceded its sovereignty to the European Union. It is unrecognizable from the country it was 50 years ago. The Catholic Ireland of saints and scholars is a thing of the past. What caused this dramatic change?

The influence of the Catholic Church on the Irish psyche cannot be overstated. The changes in every facet of Irish life are inextricably bound up with the declining role of the Church. As an indication of the Church’s former prominence in Irish society, the influential Archbishop John Charles McQuaid featured in the opening broadcast of the national television station, RTÉ, in 1961. Ironically, this station would become one of the most significant players in bringing about substantial change in Ireland.

Long before the sexual abuse scandals of the 1990s, the church’s influence had already begun to wane. Irish society was greatly affected by the major changes that took place in Catholic teaching as a result of the Second Vatican Council. Though the faithful were assured by Archbishop McQuaid that “No change will worry the tranquility of your Christian lives,” the liberalizing changes slowly but surely undermined the faithful’s allegiance to the Church. Post-Vatican II doctrine became so watered down at parish level that the Church lost its grip on the outlook of the believers.

I'd like to wish a Happy St. Patrick's Day to our Irish-American readers and friends, our Irish readers in Ireland itself, and to legal Irish immigrants. ( Illegal Irish immigrants are advised to get a cheap flight from New York to Shannon before President Trump catches you. )

One of the earliest things I wrote for the site was a piece called The Camp Of St. Patrick, [March 17, 2001] pointing out how much like the  "Camp Of The Saints" the Famine Irish exodus was for the receiving countries in North America.

There are memorials in various places (like Grosse Île, Quebec) to the dead, who didn't die of famine, but of cholera, which they brought with them. Wikipedia's article on cholera outbreaks and pandemics says

Cholera hit Ireland in 1849 and killed many of the Irish Famine survivors, already weakened by starvation and fever.^[12] In 1849, cholera claimed 5,308 lives in the major port city of Liverpool, England, an embarkation point for immigrants to North America, and 1,834 in Hull, England.^[6]

An outbreak in North America took the life of former U.S. President James K. Polk. Cholera, believed spread from Irish immigrant ship(s) from England, spread throughout the Mississippi river system, killing over 4,500 in St. Louis^[6] and over 3,000 in New Orleans.^[6] Thousands died in New York, a major destination for Irish immigrants.^[6]

However, the survivors became part of America's white majority. In Alien Nation, Peter Brimelow mentioned 19th century anti-cheap labor activist Denis Kearney (right) who fought Chinese immigration.

Brimelow wrote “[A]n Irish immigrant, Dennis Kearney, was a leader of the agitation that halted Chinese immigration into California. (His—probably mythical—slogan: `Americay for Americans, Begorrah!`)”

So in spite of our site's Anglo-Saxon bias, we wish the Irish well, and some of them even wish us well.

To the extent it's still standing after yesterday, the Stop Trump movement is comforting itself with the world's biggest lie: that John Kasich is the embodiment of the Republican Party, while Donald Trump is the bastard stepchild.

It's exactly the opposite.

It is no longer a question of what the party wants. The voters—remember them?—keep showering Trump and Cruz with Ceausescu-like percentages. The combined vote for Trump and Cruz is a ringing chorus of what this party wants: a wall, deportation, less immigration and no job-killing trade deals.

In other words, what the party wants is the diametric opposite of what the donor and consultant class wants. One would have to search the history books to find a party establishment so emphatically rejected by the voters as today's Republican Party has been.

Trump and Cruz don't agree on everything—Cruz is more interventionist on foreign policy, and Trump is more aggressive on bringing manufacturing home. But there's not much daylight between them on the crucial issue of whether to dissolve America's borders. By now, they both say build a wall, reduce immigration and protect American jobs.

In other words, Trump and Cruz have totally rejected the Bush/Ryan/Rubio/Fox News/WSJ/RNC establishment position on immigration.

It’s no secret the Obama Regime has been waging war immigration law enforcement. But in recent weeks, this war is becoming less of a metaphor and more of a brutal reality for the men and women of the Border Patrol. And as in any war, the casualties are piling up.

Just as police have been told to stand down in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, Border Patrol agents are being told to surrender to surging illegal immigration.
