Encyclopedia Hermetica: A Big History (Part 20) with Dan Attrell
Topic: Achaemenid Religion, Zoroastrianism, Zurvanism, Dualism
In this lecture series presented by The Modern Hermeticist, historian Dan Attrell cruises through the centuries and millennia, starting around the year 5000 BC and working his way down to our times, to provide listeners with a 'big picture' of history. The 'exoteric' portions of the Encyclopedia Hermetica cover major events and trends in politics, art, philosophy, religion, science, and more, in order to provide listeners with a more 'traditional' historical framework.
This romp through the ages, however, serves a dual-function as a vehicle for imparting teachings vis-a-vis the 'esoteric' dimensions of history which one cannot learn in school. The discussions are punctuated by an honest and 'alternative', no-holds barred commentary that delves off into subjects such as the occult, mysticism, and mind control, and how these topics stand in connection with the way the past has unfurled, and the way we continue to interpret those events to this day. This is done to provide listeners not only with a basic chronology of events in the history of Hermeticism, but with a veritable 'cosmology' in the spirit of a liberal education...

Kartir ...(Karder or Kerdir) was a highly influential Zoroastrian high-priest of the late 3rd century CE who served as advisor to at least three Sassanid emperors.
Kartir was probably instrumental in promoting the cause of Mazdaism (as opposed to Zurvanism, the other - now extinct - branch of Zoroastrianism, for in his inscription at Naqsh-e Rajab, Kartir makes plain that he has "decided" that "there is a heaven and there is a hell", thus putting himself at odds with the principles of (fatalistic) Zurvanism.....Nonetheless, it was during the reign of Shapur I (r. 241-272) - to whom Kartir was first appointed advisor - that Zurvanism appears to have developed as a cult, and this contradiction remains an issue of scholastic dispute. Some scholars therefore conclude, at odds with what has been stated above, that Kartir "himself held Zurvanite beliefs".
Simultaneously, Kartir was also a significant force in an iconoclastic movement that would result in the loss of favour of the shrine cults, a religious tradition alien to Indo-Iranian forms of worship that was inherited instead from the Babylonians; shrine cults had been instituted six centuries earlier by Artaxerxes II and employed as an instrument for tax collection. It was during Kartir's time as high priest that the shrines were - by law - stripped of their statues, and then either abandoned or converted into fire temples (see Atar).
According to his own inscriptions, Kartir rose to power during the reign of Shapur I (r. 240-270), to whom he served as advisor and accompanied on travels. Shapur's son Hormizd I (r. 270-271) appointed Kartir Moabadan-Moabad, 'priest of priests', a position Kartir ruthlessly used to promote his own position and to punish lower-ranking priests whose opinions he considered contrary to his own. Under subsequent kings, Kartir called for the persecution of adherents of other religions, in particular Manichaeans, whose prophet Mani was sentenced to death by Bahram I (r. 271--274), very likely on the instigation of Kartir and even though Shapur I had previously been a patron of the prophet. The persecution ceased during the reign of Narseh (r. 293--303), probably after the death of the high-priest.
Kartir's inscriptions are on the Ka'ba-i Zartosht (at Naqsh-e Rustam) and at Naqsh-e Rajab.

Here is a case when I need a crytozoologist. There is a mythological Persian God named Zurvan
that was depicted to have a Lion Head and the Lion face I videotaped is similiar to a sculpture of one found in a mithraeum cave.
Videotaped in front of Home Depo Garden Center. Oakland Park Florida. On Cinco de Mayo. The Air and Sea Show was going on that weekend. Time of videotape approx 10:30 am.

The Entire plot of the final game in Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia trilogy. (Ok so it's now a quadrology but I'm not going to be including The Forgotten Sands for sanity's sake [though I am playing it]) All the cut-scenes and insane dialogue/monologues along with all the boss fights, Dark Prince sequences and chariot rides.

Illusions -
These beings are the result of the various thieves of Babylon being tainted by the Sands of Time. They now have the power to dart quickly around, and harass the Prince by throwing daggers at him from a distance. Speed Kills are of no use against these foes, as they only appear when the Prince reaches a specific spot. Though fast, they are also weak, and once "caught", they can be killed from only a few simple strikes.
There's a similar enemy in Warrior Within known as a Silhouette. However, unlike a Silhouette, which can tease the Prince, the Illusions can only make screech-like roars.
Thralls -
These Sand monsters are encountered later in the Prince's quest, and replace the Sand Guards for the most part. They appear as tall men, covered in thick spiky armor, and with a deadly mace or a powerful sword as their weapon. They only attack the Prince if they see him, patrol certain areas, and can deliver major damage if hit by any of their strikes. It is best to dispatch Thralls with a Speed Kill (which takes an amazing amount of moves), but if that becomes out of the question, do combos, and they will die soon. Block when needed. If possible, it is best to throw them off a ledge.
They come in two versions, one carrying a sword wearing armour and one brandishing a mace, bare chested. There are no Thrall archers.
Zurvan -
Zurvanism is a now-extinct branch of Zoroastrianism that had the divinity Zurvan as its First Principle (primordial creator deity). Zurvanism is also known as Zurvanite Zoroastrianism.
In Zurvanism, Zurvan is the hypostasis of Time (and Space). The Middle Persian name derives from Avestan zruvan-, "time" or "old age".
Unlike Mazdean Zoroastrianism, Zurvanism considered Ahura Mazda not the transcendental Creator, but one of two equal-but-opposite divinities under the supremacy of Zurvan. The central Zurvanite belief made Ahura Mazda (Ohrmuzd) and Angra Mainyu (Ahriman) twin brothers.

In Zurvanism, Zurvan is the god of infinite time (and space) and is aka (“one", "alone”) deity of matter. Zurvan is the parent of the two opposites representing the good god Ahura Mazda and the evil Angra Mainyu. Zurvan is regarded as a neutral god; being without gender (neuter), passion, one whom there is no distinction between good or evil. Zurvan is also the god of destiny, light and darkness. Zurvan is a normalized rendition of the word, which in Middle Persian appears as either Zurvān, Zruvān or Zarvān. The Middle Persian name derives from Avestan zruvan-, "time" or "old age".
Zurvanites considered Ahura Mazda and Spenta Mainyu one of two equal-but-separate divinities under the primacy of Zurvan. The central Zurvanite belief made Ahura Mazda the middle god and Angra Mainyu the fallen twin brother.
Mazdeans consider the divinity of Ahura Mazda the transcendental creator. Their central belief makes Ahura Mazda the supreme god and Spenta Mainyu and Angra Mainyu twin brothers.

Under subsequent kings, Kartir called for the persecution of adherents of other religions, in particular Manichaeans, whose prophet Mani was sentenced to death by Bahram I (r. 271--274), very likely on the instigation of Kartir and even though Shapur I had previously been a patron of the prophet. The persecution ceased during the reign of Narseh (r. 293--303), probably after the death of the high-priest. Kartir's inscriptions are on the Ka'ba-i Zartosht (at Naqsh-e Rustam) and at Naqsh-e Rajab. Shared by Annah Heeta -

The Entire plot of the final game in Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia trilogy. (Ok so it's now a quadrology but I'm not going to be including The Forgotten Sands for sanity's sake [though I am playing it]) All the cut-scenes and insane dialogue/monologues along with all the boss fights, Dark Prince sequences and chariot rides. 4:02 The Vizier has started calling himself Zurvan, God of Time. For a description of the origins of the name (ripped off Wikipedia) see below. 6:33 This is actually the route to another health upgrade, to carry on correctly don't swing to the hole behind the curtain, climb to the pole above. 10:22 The Dark Prince can be such a back seat driver. 10:37 Farah displaying some amazing spider-man like skills. Illusions - These beings are the result of the various thieves of Babylon being tainted by the Sands of Time. They now have the power to dart quickly around, and harass the Prince by throwing daggers at him from a distance. Speed Kills are of no use against these foes, as they only appear when the Prince reaches a specific spot. Though fast, they are also weak, and once "caught", they can be killed from only a few simple strikes. There's a similar enemy in Warrior Within known as a Silhouette. However, unlike a Silhouette, which can tease the Prince, the Illusions can only make screech-like roars. Thralls - These Sand monsters are encountered later in the Prince's quest, and replace the Sand Guards for the most part. They appear as tall men, covered in thick spiky armor, and with a deadly mace or a powerful sword as their weapon. They only attack the Prince if they see him, patrol certain areas, and can deliver major damage if hit by any of their strikes. It is best to dispatch Thralls with a Speed Kill (which takes an amazing amount of moves), but if that becomes out of the question, do combos, and they will die soon. Block when needed. If possible, it is best to throw them off a ledge. They come in two versions, one carrying a sword wearing armour and one brandishing a mace, bare chested. There are no Thrall archers. Zurvan - Zurvanism is a now-extinct branch of Zoroastrianism that had the divinity Zurvan as its First Principle (primordial creator deity). Zurvanism is also known as Zurvanite Zoroastrianism. In Zurvanism, Zurvan is the hypostasis of Time (and Space). The Middle Persian name derives from Avestan zruvan-, "time" or "old age". Unlike Mazdean Zoroastrianism, Zurvanism considered Ahura Mazda not the transcendental Creator, but one of two equal-but-opposite divinities under the supremacy of Zurvan. The central Zurvanite belief made Ahura Mazda (Ohrmuzd) and Angra Mainyu (Ahriman) twin brothers.

Kartir (293 AD)
Kartir ...(Karder or Kerdir) was a highly influential Zoroastrian high-priest of the late 3rd century CE who served as advisor to at least three Sassanid emperors. Kartir was probably instrumental in promoting the cause of Mazdaism (as opposed to Zurvanism, the other - now extinct - branch of Zoroastrianism, for in his inscription at Naqsh-e Rajab, Kartir makes plain that he has "decided" that "there is a heaven and there is a hell", thus putting himself at odds with the principles of (fatalistic) Zurvanism.....Nonetheless, it was during the reign of Shapur I (r. 241-272) - to whom Kartir was first appointed advisor - that Zurvanism appears to have developed as a cult, and this contradiction remains an issue of scholastic dispute. Kartir ...(Karder or Kerdir) was a highly influential Zoroastrian high-priest of the late 3rd century CE who served as advisor to at least three Sassanid emperors.
Kartir was probably instrumental in promoting the cause of Mazdaism (as opposed to Zurvanism, the other - now extinct - branch of Zoroastrianism, for in his inscription at Naqsh-e Rajab, Kartir makes plain that he has "decided" that "there is a heaven and there is a hell", thus putting himself at odds with the principles of (fatalistic) Zurvanism.....Nonetheless, it was during the reign of Shapur I (r. 241-272) - to whom Kartir was first appointed advisor - that Zurvanism appears to have developed as a cult, and this contradiction remains an issue of scholastic dispute. Some scholars therefore conclude, at odds with what has been stated above, that Kartir "himself held Zurvanite beliefs".
Simultaneously, Kartir was also a significant force in an iconoclastic movement that would result in the loss of favour of the shrine cults, a religious tradition alien to Indo-Iranian forms of worship that was inherited instead from the Babylonians; shrine cults had been instituted six centuries earlier by Artaxerxes II and employed as an instrument for tax collection. It was during Kartir's time as high priest that the shrines were - by law - stripped of their statues, and then either abandoned or converted into fire temples (see Atar).
According to his own inscriptions, Kartir rose to power during the reign of Shapur I (r. 240-270), to whom he served as advisor and accompanied on travels. Shapur's son Hormizd I (r. 270-271) appointed Kartir Moabadan-Moabad, 'priest of priests', a position Kartir ruthlessly used to promote his own position and to punish lower-ranking priests whose opinions he considered contrary to his own. Under subsequent kings, Kartir called for the persecution of adherents of other religions, in particular Manichaeans, whose prophet Mani was sentenced to death by Bahram I (r. 271--274), very likely on the instigation of Kartir and even though Shapur I had previously been a patron of the prophet. The persecution ceased during the reign of Narseh (r. 293--303), probably after the death of the high-priest.
Kartir's inscriptions are on the Ka'ba-i Zartosht (at Naqsh-e Rustam) and at Naqsh-e Rajab.

Here is a case when I need a crytozoologist. There is a mythological Persian God named Zurvan
that was depicted to have a Lion Head and the Lion face I videotaped is similiar to a sculpture of one found in a mithraeum cave.
Videotaped in front of Home Depo Garden Center. Oakland Park Florida. On Cinco de Mayo. The Air and Sea Show was going on that weekend. Time of videotape approx 10:30 am.

Here is a case when I need a crytozoologist. There is a mythological Persian God named Zurvan
that was depicted to have a Lion Head and the Lion face I videotaped is similiar to a sculpture of one found in a mithraeum cave.
Videotaped in front of Home Depo Garden Center. Oakland Park Florida. On Cinco de Mayo. The Air and Sea Show was going on that weekend. Time of videotape approx 10:30 am.

The Entire plot of the final game in Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia trilogy. (Ok so it's now a quadrology but I'm not going to be including The Forgotten Sands for sanity's sake [though I am playing it]) All the cut-scenes and insane dialogue/monologues along with all the boss fights, Dark Prince sequences and chariot rides.
4:02 The Vizier has started calling himself Zurvan, God of Time. For a description of the origins of the name (ripped off Wikipedia) see below.
6:33 This is actually the route to another health upgrade, to carry on correctly don't swing to the hole behind the curtain, climb to the pole above.
10:22 The Dark Prince can be such a back seat driver.
10:37 Farah displaying some amazing spider-man like skills.
Illusions -
These beings are the result of the various thieves of Babylon being tainted by the Sands of Time. They now have the power to dart quickly around, and harass the Prince by throwing daggers at him from a distance. Speed Kills are of no use against these foes, as they only appear when the Prince reaches a specific spot. Though fast, they are also weak, and once "caught", they can be killed from only a few simple strikes.
There's a similar enemy in Warrior Within known as a Silhouette. However, unlike a Silhouette, which can tease the Prince, the Illusions can only make screech-like roars.
Thralls -
These Sand monsters are encountered later in the Prince's quest, and replace the Sand Guards for the most part. They appear as tall men, covered in thick spiky armor, and with a deadly mace or a powerful sword as their weapon. They only attack the Prince if they see him, patrol certain areas, and can deliver major damage if hit by any of their strikes. It is best to dispatch Thralls with a Speed Kill (which takes an amazing amount of moves), but if that becomes out of the question, do combos, and they will die soon. Block when needed. If possible, it is best to throw them off a ledge.
They come in two versions, one carrying a sword wearing armour and one brandishing a mace, bare chested. There are no Thrall archers.

Zurvanism is a now-extinct branch of Zoroastrianism that had the divinity Zurvan as its First Principle (primordial creator deity). Zurvanism is also known as Zurvanite Zoroastrianism.
In Zurvanism, Zurvan is the hypostasis of Time (and Space). The Middle Persian name derives from Avestan zruvan-, "time" or "old age".
Unlike Mazdean Zoroastrianism, Zurvanism considered Ahura Mazda not the transcendental Creator, but one of two equal-but-opposite divinities under the supremacy of Zurvan. The central Zurvanite belief made Ahura Mazda (Ohrmuzd) and Angra Mainyu (Ahriman) twin brothers.
