The Staten Island Wetlands
Wetland systems proved critical in protecting Staten Island communities during 2012’s Hurricane Sandy by providing a natural buffer from the rising waters. The Trust for Public Land is currently working as quickly as possible to identify and acquire more lands in Staten Island in order to expand a network of wetlands which can help absorb the impact of large storms and protect communities.

The Trust for Public Land works to protect the places people care about and to create close-to-home parks, particularly in and near cities, where 80 percent of Americans live. Their goal is to ensure that every child has easy access to a safe place to play in nature. Today, nearly 10 million Americans live within a 10-minute walk of a park or natural area protected by The Trust for Public Land. In Denver's Five Points neighborhood, Mestizo-Curtis Park serves a diverse community. However, challenges common to urban settings have created a sense of unease about this park and kids play in tiny yards while the park sits empty our investment helps to make the change in this neighborhood. Trust for Public Land is a long standing partner in much of the built environment work that Kaiser Permanente does. Kaiser Permanente has funded them in some capacity since 2009 including a study of the economic benefits of Denver’s parks and the evaluation of the New Freedom park renovation. The latest opportunity in Mestizo-Curtis park aligns with Kaiser Permanente's investment in LiveWell Colorado, and investments in Mile High Connects because this park is situated within walking distance to a transit oriented development site going online in 2016.

Our Mission & History
The Trust for Public Land conserves land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, and other natural places, ensuring livable communities for generations to come.
We were founded in 1972 with goals of protecting land in and around cities and pioneering new land conservation techniques. Over the years, our work expanded to include projects from inner city to wilderness, and our broad experience has made us a national leader and innovator in city park creation, state and local conservation funding, and using GIS for conservation planning.
Founded for Innovation
Not long after the first Earth Day, a group of lawyers, real estate professionals, and finance experts founded The Trust for Public Land to bring a modern business approach to conservation. Sophisticated finance and legal techniques have since helped us complete more than 5,200 park and conservation projects nationwide. In the early years, we shared this knowledge with other conservationists and fostered the growth of the local land trust movement to protect open space for communities across the West.
Funds and Visions for Conservation
In the 1990s, responding to an emerging need, we established our Conservation Finance service to help communities organize and pass conservation ballot measures. We also pioneered watershed conservation to protect drinking water and the use of conservation easements to protect working farms and ranches. Most recently, we launched an award-winning, GIS-based Conservation Vision service to help communities identify which lands to protect and where parks are needed most.
Moving Forward
Innovation remains in our DNA, and The Trust for Public Land project managers bring business skills to conservation projects from the canyons of New York City to the canyons of Montana. In cities, we craft strategies for turning vacant lots into community-designed parks and playgrounds. Our Center for City Park Excellence sponsors research and shares best practices for city park systems. And we're addressing the looming climate crisis with a three-pronged climate conservation program to help reduce greenhouse gasses, promote climate adaptation, and create park-rich, climate-smart cities.

ORLANDO, Oct. 1, 2015 /3BL Media/ — WFTV Channel 9 Family Connection and The Trust for Public Land today named Chuck O’Neal as Central Florida’s 2015 Cox Conserves Hero. O’Neal’s nonprofit of choice, League of Women Voters of Florida Education Fund, will receive $10,000 on his behalf. The three finalists were chosen by a judging panel and then competed in an online public vote to be named Central Florida’s Cox Conserves Hero.
Chuck O’Neal has advocated for Florida’s natural resources for more than 15 years. An entrepreneur and lifelong Florida resident, Chuck has volunteered hundreds of hours educating voters and lawmakers on the importance of conserving Florida’s unique ecosystem. He organized “Speak up Wekiva,” which engaged community leaders and the public at large in the need to protect the aquifer and created greater awareness about the ill effects of groundwater pollution on people and wildlife. Chuck also leads advocacy efforts for the protection of the Florida black bear and played a vital role in the passing of the Florida Land and Water Conservation Initiative in 2014.
