Horseshoe Crab Documentary
During my first year of grad school I conducted a jailbreak-- a fellow grad student and I snuck into the
Invertebrate Zoology lab and freed all the horseshoe crabs. I wish we'd know then that we dropped about $50,000 back into the sea. Of course, horseshoe crabs aren't that expensive, but their blood is. One quart of horseshoe crab blood costs around fifteen thousand dollars [1]. And why would anyone pay for that? Well, in addition to coming in a shade of oh-so-chic blue, it also saves human lives.

They complete most of their life steps during night.
But they are also seen roaming in daytime.
Crabs have 10 legs.
While moving, most species of Crabs go sideward instead of frontward.
Crab's one pair of legs are heavier and stronger than other legs.
That pair of legs contains claws.
Those claws are mainly used to hold things during feeding.
Crabs also use those claws against enemies.
Crabs are omnivorous.
They usually roam in groups, but can also be seen roaming alone.
Red Crabs are seen roaming in our coastal region and beaches.
They are wonderful red creature.
They live in holes of beach dune.
Red Crabs usually roam in group.
Group of thousands of Red Crabs look like
Red Carpet from distant.
Sea beaches become colorful with their presence.
The slightest sound of enemy makes them run swiftly.
The antenna on their head and other sensitive body parts help them to locate enemies.
And they avoid predation by quickly hiding inside holes.
Flower Crabs are bluish colored.
They are also known as
Fresh Blue Crab.
They look wonderful with the blue color.
Though most of the time they remain inside holes, but sometimes come out for various reasons.
Apart from Sundarbans, there are also some Mangrove forests in our coastal region.
The muddy soil of
Mangrove forest is home to
Fiddler Crabs.
They are also known as Mangrove Crab.
This small crab roam in group.
One of the claws of male
Fiddler Crab grows much larger.
They use that claw to attract females in breeding time.
Horseshoe Crab is a different kind of creature among Arthropoda phylum.
Despite being known as Crab, they are actually not Crab.
They are called
Horseshoe because of their body shape.
The entire body of this Crab-shaped living fossil is protected by a hard carapace.
They usually live in shallow portions of Sea.
Sometime they come to the shore.
Mudcrabs are the most known and biggest among Crabs of Bangladesh.
They are mostly seen in our coastal area.
A mature Mudcrab can be 15 centimeter in length and 300-600 gram in weight.
They can be blackish-green or deep brown.
Apart from Bangladesh, these crabs are also found in the
Islands of
Indian Ocean,
Pacific Ocean and
Atlantic Ocean.
In Bangladesh, Mudcrabs are being cultured within enclosure as an alternative to
Shrimps.
These enclosures are protected with net or bamboo fence.
Crab farmers collect Crabs' larvae from nature to commercially culture those in enclosure.
Mudcrab culture has now become popular, for its potentiality to earn foreign currencies.
Maryland Blue Crabs are also seen in our country.
They live in saltwater.
But during breeding season, they roam in Islands of estuary.
Various species of Crabs are also found in hilly fountains.
Crabs are keeping aquatic ecosystems pollution free by feeding on dead fishes, bacteria, fungi etc.
But the number of Crabs is decreasing as the juvenile Crabs are being harvested from nature.
Moreover, since Crabs with eggs are more expensive, people are harvesting large number of Crabs in breeding season.
Hence, many Crab species are now endangered.
If it continues like this, other dependent organisms will also become endangered.
The whole ecosystem will become unbalanced.
Accordingly, it is important to ban arbitrary harvesting of Crabs from nature.
Beside artificially producing larvae and earning money by exporting Crabs, we have to conserver these colorful Crabs in nature.

Thanks Grandpa, your words of wisdom rang true.
I tried a large 4in crab on a bigger hook to see what'll hit. All day long my other rod with smaller crabs were hitting but not the bigger one. Then late in the afternoon it took off. I was rewarded with a
12 pounder! Ok, smaller crabs for smaller fish, bigger crabs for bigger fish. Kinda made sense.
The bottom of this area is mud with seaweed & sponges with loose rocks, no coral reef. So i streamlined my baitcasting style rigs by beefing-up my whipping rigs with stronger line, bigger hooks, and larger lead eggs. I use this to whip my crabs out. No 3-way swivels or tear drop weights.
Don't need them for this type of locality.
Streamline means greater casting distance. Never been hung-up yet. This system i made up for myself, but this day i brought my friend Alric Kutara. He likes it and now uses it there. 2
Weeks ago i brought my buddy
Wayne Choy who also commented on my "out of the box" unique style of doing things. But they both agree this type of system does work here.
My nature is to do things "innovatively", when i find something that works i don't keep it to myself. I share. From double beading to grubless hook whipping to using a u/v light on grubs at night & whipping with squid flashers i love being the weird guy.
Last week a
DLNR officer came up to me and asked what i was using. He examined my setup and baits and was kinda intrigued.
I was glad that everyone i showed this to wants to either try it or incorporate it. A study that was recently completed shows this area to be free of
Ciguatera poisoning. No reef means no ciguatoxin dinoflagellates that cause ciguatera. So the
Jack Trevally &
Barracuda are free of cig here. I wouldn't eat the shellfish though.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my videos. It takes me a long time to put a storyboard of pictures & videos together in the field.
Then the editing on my mac gives me a headache. Then the time to format & upload. Joe Olivas of
Kauai is correct, you do this to share & educate, not to make money because that would be a waste of valuable time for the small return that'll take years to mature.
Really hope everyone can make use of any information that i'm sharing.

Wherever i fish i remember what my grandpa told me. To always walk around, survey the area.
Ask others what works. Be observant to the natural foods that are abundant. Ok, this area has quite of few crabbers around & anglers whipping for papio. So on my first day i started whipping but only caught 6 papio between 9-11in so threw them all back. The next day caught a lizardfish with a large papio behind it trying to tear my fish off. So i whipped the whole whipping rig back into the water as a dunking rig.
Boom!
Caught a 17-1/2in
White Trevally Papio. Hmm. I gave the fish to my friend who said the lizardfish wasn't inside it but it was full of crabs. Ok, next day i rigged live crabs & was catching large papios & releasing
Eagle Rays all day.

Horseshoe crab's superpower blue blood is a bacteria fighting machine, and scientists are literally borrowing this trick to help test medical injections for contamination. When a horseshoe crab is cut, the wound is immediately slathered in bacteria from its murky surroundings. To prevent a potentially lethal infection, certain blood cells carry compounds that cause the blood to clot up when exposed to bacteria fragments. Cut.
Clot. Cut. Clot. The horseshoe crab is quickly sealed back up and ready to go. There it is, our horseshoe crab wallowing in a muddy pit, fighting infection and being awesome.
Now cut scene from our warm, cozy shoal to a cold, sterile lab. A scientist is cradling his head in distress. Even after sterilization, one of his vaccine batches is making people sick, causing serious complications.
Little does he know that, thanks to molecules in the bacterial outer layer, these suckers can remain toxic even after death. The only way to test for the presence of bacteria pieces is to inject some adorable fluffy bunny with the vaccine and see if it gets sick.
At least, that was the only way.
Bunny testing was the main way various injectables and implants were tested for contamination. Until folks realized that not only could you test with horseshoe crab blood and get near instant results, you didn't even have to kill the crabs. Round 'em up, wash 'em off, give 'em a good clean, and then extract about ⅓ of their blood.
The crabs are then returned to the wild. The blood, on the other hand, is shipped off for processing, and the clotting factors isolated. If a vaccine is contaminated with bacteria, adding a bit of horseshoe crab powder will turn the solution into a gooey mess, if it's safe, it remains liquid [2].
Do the crabs mind? A bit.
Horseshoe crabs are roughly 10% more likely to kick the bucket in the year following bleeding, compared to their un-stuck comrades [3]. But this, scientists suggest, isn't really a big threat to crab populations when stacked against all the other things they have to deal with- like being used for bait [3]. In fact, some of the same crabs may be collected for blood extraction year after year after year.
As for our escaped inmates? When we freed our Invertebrate Zoology horseshoe crabs, we thought for sure they'd return to their friends and tell them all about their terrible abduction to an alien lab. They would be shunned, the laughing stock of the horseshoe crab community. Clearly, we underestimated just how often horseshoe crabs visit our world
