Service robots assist human beings, typically by performing a job that is dirty, dull, distant, dangerous or repetitive, including household chores. They typically are autonomous and/or operated by a built-in control system, with manual override options. The term "service robot" does not have a strict technical definition. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) has proposed a tentative definition: "A service robot is a robot which operates semi- or fully autonomously to perform services useful to the well-being of humans and equipment, excluding manufacturing operations."
The possible applications of robots to assist in human chores is widespread. At present there are a few main categories that these robots fall into.
Industrial service robots can be used to carry out simple tasks, such as examining welding, as well as more complex, harsh-environment tasks, such as aiding in the dismantling of nuclear power stations. Industrial robots have been defined by the International Federation of Robotics as "an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications".

Service robots on the rise
I ordered a snack from the front desk at my hotel in Silicon Valley only to have it delivered by this cute little autonomous hotel robot. The future of snacking is now! Service robotics is in demand. In contrast to "classical" industrial robotics, the emphasis is on applications for the service sector: walking aids for patients, self-propelled cleaning machines, aids for agriculture, in the air, undewater or even in outerspace - service robotics is now in practical use everywhere.
(29 Dec 2016) Meet Pepper -- a friendly humanoid robot that could be coming to a shopping center near you. Pepper looks like another expensive toy in the San Francisco mall where it delights crowds as it dances, plays games, poses for selfies and chats in a child-like voice. But it would be a mistake to dismiss the 4-foot-tall android as mere child's play. Imported by Japan, Pepper is part of an ambitious push to put personable robots in malls, airports and other businesses around the world. Tokyo-based SoftBank Robotics is placing Pepper robots in Westfield Corp.'s malls in San Francisco and Santa Clara, California for a three-month test run to learn how it can engage shoppers in its first extended appearance in the U.S. If all goes well, Westfield plans to spice up its New York mal...
What was dismissed as science fiction not long ago now finds its way into our lives. Service robots will unburden and support people with everyday things. At AUTOMATICA 2014 in Munich professional service robotics is a new exhibition focus. The platform for automated production processes is exhibiting not only innovations in robotics, assembly and handling technology as well as industrial image processing, but also the latest mobile and autonomous robots that in the future will lend people go a hand - in industrial processes as well as in daily use.
Restaurant robot delivers the future of food service. Although slow and still in need of human assistance, the restaurant robot does add a sufficient amount of futurism to an otherwise pedestrian dining experience. I saw this robot at the "Supreme Tastes Jiang Cuisine" Restaurant at Marina Square in Singapore. Supreme Tastes Jiang Nan Cuisine is specialized in Jiang Nan cuisine as the name suggests, as well as Lanzhou Ramen (hand-pulled noodles). It is also the first and only Chinese restaurant that offers healthy multi-grain food in Singapore. The interior design of the restaurant is Jiang Nan style with an open kitchen, where guests could see how the Ramen and the Shanshui beancurd are made in house. Supreme Tastes believes in serving guests with heartily delicious food and heartily si...

Service robotics in Europe has evolved from prototypes to commercially viable products. Thus, more and more professional service robots enter the market. Due to this positive market development, professional service robotics will be emphasized as a central theme at the AUTOMATICA 2014. The service robotics industry will present itself with great confidence and visibility at a separate exhibition sector.

EE380: Computer Systems Colloquium Seminar Service Robots Are Here II Speaker: Steve Cousins, Savioke After 20 years of predictions that robots will work among us soon, the predictions are finally starting to come true. Investment in robotics is up, enabling start-ups to explore a range of use cases. Decreasing component costs will make it easier to make real business cases for the technology. Mobile robots are beginning to transform the way we serve people in hotels, elder care facilities, hospitals, restaurants, and throughout the service industry, and this trend is accelerating. This talk is a sequel to my January 2015 talk. I'll discuss what has happened in the Service Robot field over the last two years. About the Speaker: Steve Cousins is passionate about building and deploying ...

***** SEASON 01 STARTS APRIL 2017******* “Rostered On" is an independent Australian comedy show based around the day to day struggles of working for a faceless retail corporation known as “Electroworld”. Shaun (Paul Moore, Winners and Losers, 7 network) hasn’t quite figured out what he wants to do in life. Instead, he has found himself on the wrong side of 30, working in a job he hates, dealing with painful customers, cliché co-workers, and taking orders from the ignorant. Shot over two days, on a shoe string budget, this truly was a labor of love for the cast and crew, and we look forward to announcing details about the first season as it develops. Stay tuned! Humanoid robots are increasingly being used in the tourism industry. Very promising results have been reported in regards to these robots providing services to international tourists in destinations. Where can robots be used particularly well and what are some of the things robots will still not be able to do in the future? The service robot Pepper demonstrates his skills live on stage. When asked the question how they think of robots western people are rather reluctant, even a little scared. In Japan it’s completely the opposite, the Japanese love robots. In Japan, all objects – robots as well – have a ‘soul’. This means that there itelligent robots will be accepted much easier than in the West. In this VPRO Backlight story director Rob van Hattum investigates the frameworks that determine the boundaries of how we see smart and social robots. American philosopher Daniel Dennett is convinced humans themselves are robots made from robots, made from robots, made from robots. Human cells and parts of the cells can be seen as robot systems. He says our brain is a hardware robot platform that is being filled with the software of our culture and that is what makes us intellige...
