(29 Dec 2016) Meet Pepper -- a friendly humanoid robot that could be coming to a shopping center near you.
Pepper looks like another expensive toy in the San Francisco mall where it delights crowds as it dances, plays games, poses for selfies and chats in a child-like voice.
But it would be a mistake to dismiss the 4-foot-tall android as mere child's play.
Imported by Japan, Pepper is part of an ambitious push to put personable robots in malls, airports and other businesses around the world.
Tokyo-based SoftBank Robotics is placing Pepper robots in Westfield Corp.'s malls in San Francisco and Santa Clara, California for a three-month test run to learn how it can engage shoppers in its first extended appearance in the U.S.
If all goes well, Westfield plans to spice up its New York mall at the World Trade Center and Garden State mall in Paramus, New Jersey, with Pepper too.
Pepper is already being used in grocery stores, coffee shops, cruise ships and homes across Japan and Europe.
If the technology advances as Softbank Robotics hopes, Pepper could become a playmate, companion and concierge that responds to voice commands to retrieve vital information, make reservations and control home appliances.
Customer-service robots could also be coming to your local airport.
Mineta San Jose International Airport recently introduced three robots to entertain and guide travelers arriving in and departing from Silicon Valley.
The robots - named Amelia, Norma, and Piper - are believed to be the first robots deployed at a U.S. airport. Similar machines are already working in airports in Japan, Canada and Europe.
Designed by South Korea's Future Robots, the airport bots can dance, play music, take photos and provide information about shopping, dinning and restrooms on a large touchscreen - in six languages. It's topped with a head-shaped screen showing a young woman's face.
Home-improvement retailer Lowe's recently introduced "Lowe-Bot" at its San Jose store and plans to roll them out at 10 other stores in the San Francisco Bay area in early 2017.
The NAVii retail robot, designed by Mountain View, Calif.-based Fellow Robots, can help shoppers find merchandise in its sprawling stores. It was first introduced at Lowe's OSH hardware stores two years ago as "OSHBot."
Lowe's machine has a detailed database of the store's inventory, enabling it to quickly determine if something is in stock and then guide shoppers to the aisle where the requested item is located.

Restaurant robot delivers the future of food service. Although slow and still in need of human assistance, the restaurant robot does add a sufficient amount of futurism to an otherwise pedestrian dining experience. I saw this robot at the "Supreme Tastes Jiang Cuisine" Restaurant at Marina Square in Singapore.
Supreme Tastes Jiang Nan Cuisine is specialized in Jiang Nan cuisine as the name suggests, as well as Lanzhou Ramen (hand-pulled noodles). It is also the first and only Chinese restaurant that offers healthy multi-grain food in Singapore. The interior design of the restaurant is Jiang Nan style with an open kitchen, where guests could see how the Ramen and the Shanshui beancurd are made in house. Supreme Tastes believes in serving guests with heartily delicious food and heartily sincere service, in the hope to bring a green and healthy dining experience to all diners.

Service robot
Service robots assist human beings, typically by performing a job that is dirty, dull, distant, dangerous or repetitive, including household chores. They typically are autonomous and/or operated by a built-in control system, with manual override options. The term "service robot" does not have a strict technical definition. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) has proposed a tentative definition: "A service robot is a robot which operates semi- or fully autonomously to perform services useful to the well-being of humans and equipment, excluding manufacturing operations."
Types
The possible applications of robots to assist in human chores is widespread. At present there are a few main categories that these robots fall into.
Industrial
Industrial service robots can be used to carry out simple tasks, such as examining welding, as well as more complex, harsh-environment tasks, such as aiding in the dismantling of nuclear power stations. Industrial robots have been defined by the International Federation of Robotics as "an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications".

(29 Dec 2016) Meet Pepper -- a friendly humanoid robot that could be coming to a shopping center near you.
Pepper looks like another expensive toy in the San Francisco mall where it delights crowds as it dances, plays games, poses for selfies and chats in a child-like voice.
But it would be a mistake to dismiss the 4-foot-tall android as mere child's play.
Imported by Japan, Pepper is part of an ambitious push to put personable robots in malls, airports and other businesses around the world.
Tokyo-based SoftBank Robotics is placing Pepper robots in Westfield Corp.'s malls in San Francisco and Santa Clara, California for a three-month test run to learn how it can engage shoppers in its first extended appearance in the U.S.
If all goes well, Westfield plans to spice up its New York mall at the World Trade Center and Garden State mall in Paramus, New Jersey, with Pepper too.

Steve serves on the boards of the Open Source Robotics Foundation and the Open Perception Foundation, and is an active participant in the Robots for Humanity project. Steve has been a senior manager at IBM's Almaden Research Center, and a member of the senior staff at Xerox PARC. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, and BS and MS degrees in computer science from Washington University.

Shaun (Paul Moore, Winners and Losers, 7 network) hasn’t quite figured out what he wants to do in life. Instead, he has found himself on the wrong side of 30, working in a job he hates, dealing with painful customers, cliché co-workers, and taking orders from the ignorant.

When asked the question how they think of robots western people are rather reluctant, even a little scared. In Japan it’s completely the opposite, the Japanese love robots. In Japan, all objects – robots as well – have a ‘soul’. This means that there itelligent robots will be accepted much easier than in the West. In this VPRO Backlight story director Rob van Hattum investigates the frameworks that determine the boundaries of how we see smart and social robots.
American philosopher Daniel Dennett is convinced humans themselves are robots made from robots, made from robots, made from robots. Human cells and parts of the cells can be seen as robot systems. He says our brain is a hardware robot platform that is being filled with the software of our culture and that is what makes us intelligent. Dutch social robotics professor Vanessa Evers is building social robots that approach you with understanding, that really understand what you mean. These robots can help you with a museum tour or point the way in an airport.
