Sensitivity (human)

The sensitivity or insensitivity of a human, often considered with regard to a particular kind of stimulus, is the strength of the feeling it results in, in comparison with the strength of the stimulus. The concept applies to physical as well as emotional feeling. Stimulus may consist of any or all types of stimuli, including political, nationalistic, religious, physical, mental, emotional, etc. In the political sense, perception of and reaction to stimuli is often inculcated by - and for the benefit of - power holders.

The controller parameters are typically matched to the process characteristics and since the process may change, it is important that the controller parameters are chosen in such a way that the closed loop system is not sensitive to variations in process dynamics. One way to characterize sensitivity is through the nominal sensitivity peak :

The sensitivity function , which appears in the above formula also describes the transfer function from measurement noise to process output, where measurement noise is fed into the system through the feedback and the process output is noisy. Hence, lower values of suggest further attenuation of the measurement noise. The sensitivity function also tells us how the disturbances are influenced by feedback. Disturbances with frequencies such that is less than one are reduced by an amount equal to the distance to the critical point and disturbances with frequencies such that is larger than one are amplified by the feedback.

Sensitivity and specificity are statistical measures of the performance of a binary classification test, also known in statistics as classification function:

Thus sensitivity quantifies the avoiding of false negatives, as specificity does for false positives.

For any test, there is usually a trade-off between the measures. For instance, in an airport security setting in which one is testing for potential threats to safety, scanners may be set to trigger on low-risk items like belt buckles and keys (low specificity), in order to reduce the risk of missing objects that do pose a threat to the aircraft and those aboard (high sensitivity). This trade-off can be represented graphically as a receiver operating characteristic curve.

"Sensitivity" is the title of a number-one single by Ralph Tresvant. It was the first single from the self-titled debut album of the New Edition frontman since the split of the group. The hit song spent one week at number one on the US R&B chart. It also reached number four on the US pop chart and number eighteen in the UK.In 2005, British electronic duo Lemon Jelly sampled "Sensitivity" in their track '90 - A Man Like Me. In October 2004 "Sensitivity" appeared in popular videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on R&B/Soul radio station CSR 103.9. The song is also known for being covered by legendary Tejano singer Selena, who performed it with her band Los Dinos on April 7, 1991 in San Antonio, Texas.

Human (Skye Sweetnam song)

"Human" is the fourth single released by Canadian pop rock singer Skye Sweetnam. The song is the lead single released by Sweetnam off of her second album Sound Soldier. The song was produced by production group The Matrix.

Song information

The song was released on her MySpace as a sneak peek, while the full version was leaked to the internet on September 8, 2007. Sweetnam performed the song while she toured across Canada in October and November 2007 as the opening act for Kalan Porter and then on her own tour with Faber Drive. She also performed "Human" as part of her setlist on the 2007 School Rocks Canada tour. The new song was released through EMI, quelling rumors of Sweetnam being dropped from Capitol Records.

Music video

The music video, directed by Sean Wainsteim, was inspired by the film Tank Girl. Sweetnam is in a wasteland where she's surrounded by "junk people" while singing about how "we're only human". She also leads the group of "junkies" in a dance sequence and is followed while driving a bulldozer. The ending of the video has a comic book-style animation sequence. This was drawn by comic book artist Cameron Stewart.

Human (2015 film)

Human is a 2015 documentary by French environmentalist Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The film is almost entirely composed of exclusive aerial footage and first-person stories told into the camera. It was the first movie to premiere in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations, to an audience of 1,000 viewers, including U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The film was financed by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, which gave it rights-free to the GoodPlanet Foundation, responsible for driving the project.

Production

Human was produced over a period of three years, with director Yann Arthus-Bertrand and a team of 20 persons interviewing more than 2000 people in 60 countries. The crew included 5 journalists and cameramen with a "fixer" in each location for organizing things and four people responsible for receiving and sorting the material. The aerial crew had 6 people including Arthus-Bertrand.

Each person interviewed was asked the same set of forty questions and was presented on a plain black background without any musical score or any details about their identity and locale. Arthus-Bertrand hoped that removing personal identifiers would draw focus to our similarities, explaining that they "... wanted to concentrate on what we all share. If you put the name of a person, or what country they’re from, you don’t feel that as strongly".
