When the Cocos Islands voted to become part of Australia in 1984, its residents were promised control of their land. Nearly 30 years on, locals say they're now being denied a future on their own islands.
"I want our youth to be able to stand on their own two feet and take responsibility in the Cocos Islands,", explains island elder Cree Bin Haig. "If this doesn't happen, it's as if we have gone back to being under colonial rule." 28 years ago, Malay elders negotiated the islands' integration with Australia based on promises that they would take ownership of their land and have their customs respected. Today, the islands remain blighted by external influence and many feel short-changed. "This is the homeland of the Cocos Islanders, not the homeland of the whites," declares former government adviser Dick Whittington. "But the whites have the power here. It's not right. It's not fair."
The Cocos Islands - also known as the Keeling Islands - are an atoll of 27 islands midway between Australia and Sri Lanka, and are home to around 600 people.
The islands are a territory of Australia, and the official language is English, but most residents speak a dialect of Malay and are Sunni Muslims. SBS reporter Brian Thomson sent this report.

The fascinating underwater world that surrounds the legendary Cocos Island is a unique treasure. Its biodiversity and vast populations of marine life have turned it into a paradise for both divers and marine biologists alike. From the small harbour of Puntarenas the journey of the Undersea Hunter and its experienced crew travels more than five hundred kilometres in a southwesterly direction, far away from the economic problems of Costa Rica to an unspoiled and natural world, once the haunt of pirates. The journey from the mainland to the isolated and remote Cocos Island takes a little over thirty hours. In the underwater caves, rocky alcoves and ocean bed around Cocos Island there are huge numbers of Whitetip Sharks. Scientists and marine biologists such as Frenchman, Jacques Cousteau, and Austrian, Hans Hass, developed much interest in the island and travelled to this remote location in the South Pacific to document the beauty of this special place. The plant life beneath the water is like that of an enchanting garden. Both the surroundings of Cocos Island and its marine flora are protected as they form the basis of a unique habitat. Here it is rare to spot only a single fish, so diverse and full of life is the ocean close to the island that began to rise from the bottom of the Pacific around two and a half million years ago as a result of volcanic activity. Due to this exceptional habitat and its fantastic biodiversity it is no wonder that the waters of Cocos Island attract divers from all over the world. Nevertheless, the island and the sea creatures that inhabit its coastal waters have been spared mass tourism. Even though no one has discovered buried treasure each member of the expedition has been made richer by their many wonderful impressions of this wonderful island.

Cocos Island (Spanish: Isla del Coco) is an uninhabited island (except for a permanent ranger station) located off the shore of Costa Rica (to be distinguished from Cocos Island, Isla de Cocos, Panama in the Pearl Islands). It constitutes the 11th district (one of 13) of Puntarenas Canton of the province of Puntarenas. It is one of the National Parks of Costa Rica. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 550 km (340 mi) from the Pacific shore of Costa Rica, at 05°31′08″N 087°04′18″W / 5.51889°N 87.07167°W / 5.51889; -87.07167Coordinates: 05°31′08″N 087°04′18″W / 5.51889°N 87.07167°W / 5.51889; -87.07167. With an area of approximately 23.85 km² (9.2 mi²), about 8×3 km (5×1.9 mi) and a perimeter of around 23.3 km, this island is more or less rectangular in shape.
Surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, Cocos Island is admired by scuba divers for its populations of Hammerhead sharks, rays, dolphins and other large marine species. The extremely wet climate and oceanic character give Cocos an ecological character that is not shared with either the Galapagos Archipelago or any of the other islands (e.g., Malpelo or Coiba) in this region of the world.

The journey from the mainland to the isolated and remote Cocos Island takes a little over thirty hours. In the underwater caves, rocky alcoves and ocean bed around Cocos Island there are huge numbers of Whitetip Sharks. The plant life beneath the water is like that of an enchanting garden. Both the surroundings of Cocos Island and its marine flora are protected as they form the basis of a unique habitat. Here it is rare to spot only a single fish, so diverse and full of life is the ocean close to the island that began to rise from the bottom of the Pacific around two and a half million years ago as a result of volcanic activity. Due to this exceptional habitat and its fantastic biodiversity it is no wonder that the waters of Cocos Island attract divers from all over the world. Nevertheless, the island and the sea creatures that inhabit its coastal waters have been spared mass tourism. Even though no one has discovered buried treasure each member of the expedition has been made richer by their many wonderful impressions of this wonderful island.

Sadly, the damage some fisheries have been doing to the sea life has been out of control, and while his work has been instrumental in passing laws to help protect marine life including stopping shark fining, enforcement has been more difficult. This is where drones come in, and Todd will tell us more about this. -

Vor der Küste Costa Ricas liegt die Kinderstube vieler Haiarten. Gleichzeitig wird dort eine intensive Fischerei betrieben. Viele Haie sterben als Beifang oder werden intensiv gejagt, um ihre Flossen nach Asien zu verkaufen.
Haie gelten in den Weltmeeren als eine Art Signalfische. Seit mehreren Millionen Jahren säubern sie die Ozeane von alten und kranken Fischen und bewahren so das natürliche Gleichgewicht. Doch diese Ordnung ist ins Wanken geraten, seit gezielt Jagd auf die Tiere gemacht wird. Die vom asiatischen Markt ausgehende Nachfrage nach ihren Flossen hat viele Arten bereits an den Rand der Ausrottung gebracht. Allein Costa Rica exportiert wöchentlich eine Tonne der begehrten Ware, schätzungsweise 4.000 Tiere müssen dafür ihr Leben lassen.
Der ehemalige Kapitän William Flores hat sich zum Haischützer gewandelt und versucht, illegale Händler aufzudecken. Die Biologen Ilena Zanella und Andrès Lopez wiederum haben die Naturschutzorganisation Misión Tiburón, zu deutsch "Mission Hai", gegründet, mit der sie die Routen der Haie erkunden. Die dadurch gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sollen helfen, Schutzzonen einzurichten und bestehende Schutzgebiete zu erweitern.
Eine dieser Schutzzonen wurde um die Insel Isla del Coco eingerichtet, 500 Kilometer vor der Küste Costa Ricas. Sie gilt als wahres Paradies für Haie. Bereits mehrmals haben die Biologen dort verschiedene Haiarten mit Sendern versehen, um die Wege der Tiere nachverfolgen zu können. Nun wollen die Wissenschaftler zurückkehren, um die Sender auszutauschen und neue Tiere damit zu bestücken.
