WASHINGTON,
D.C. —
Larry Russell Dawson, a 66-year-old church pastor from
Tennessee, was shot by
Capitol police after pulling a gun on authorities while going through security clearance.
The incident took place just after 2:30 p.m. on March 29 at the underground entrance to the
U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. The suspect was in line with other visitors to enter a routine security check
point.
When he passed through the metal detectors, the magnetometers beeped, causing security personnel to approach him. That's when Dawson reportedly pulled out a firearm and aimed it at the officers. A Capitol police officer then shot and disarmed the gunman without fatally wounding him.
Police report no officers were injured in the incident, but an unnamed female bystander was hit by shrapnel and suffered only minor injuries. Dawson had emergency surgery at
MedStar Washington Hospital Center to treat his injuries and remains in police custody.
Dawson was previously arrested in October of last year over an outburst during a congressional session at the
House of Representatives, where he reportedly yelled "I am a prophet of God," leading to his swift removal from the chamber.
