It can be agreed on that we as a society put way too much trust into the media. From news, television shows, documentaries, and more, we assume that what we watch and read nowadays is true. Because critical thinking seems to be a dying art, more and more people are becoming easily fooled and proving to be gullible when it comes to information being presented to us. Only a hand full of people today actually investigate and research the facts anymore, while the vast majority of the population will take everything as truth and turn off the television.
Since the inception of the internet, it is easier than ever to spread false information, especially if it seems to come from a legitimate news source. Anyone who doesn’t know any better and know what websites to avoid if you want factual information can fall victim to believe false information. What’s worse than merely believing the stories is spreading them around and unknowingly planting the seeds of deception to a wider audience. Thanks to viral marketing, the media can do a decent amount of work to troll the world and cause us all to believe in the wrong information. The ultimate cost of these actions is leading people into mass hysteria and frenzy, thus causing chaos and the unraveling of society as we know it.
So, how much faith should we put into the media nowadays? That can be hard to tell, because sometimes the most accurate media outlets are not the most popular. These days, the media can be easily bought out by major corporations and politicians and can easily sway people into the appropriate direction that they want. One media outlet that regularly gets accused of misleading people on purpose is Fox News, given how conservative and right wing the station is.
This video contains ten times that that media has trolled us. We will primarily mention the incidents where people were fooled into believing false information that was presented as true. Even if the “truth” was in the fine print, it was subtle enough to be missed on purpose. You can say that the 1938 radio drama of “War of the Worlds” was what exposed the fact that the public audience is gullible. Despite announcements at the beginning of the show that stated that the broadcast was a drama, most people tuned in too late and missed the announcement. Thinking that the earth was being invaded by aliens, people were sent into chaos. What many people saw as chaos and disruption, the media saw it as an opportunity to commit some class A trolling on the public.
Hollywood can also make us believe things that don’t actually exist, like mermaids. The docufiction film, “Mermaids” cause thousands to believe that mermaids were actually real. The documentary was so well done, with actors playing researchers and scientists, plus airing on Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel, there are people who now use the documentary to defend the fact that mermaids are real.
So check out the rest of the times that the media has trolled us, and be sure to read those disclaimers in the future.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. TEDxYouth@Manchester is proud to present its 6th TEDxYouth conference on Wednesday 5th November 2014. Our event is presented to 450 post 16 students from The Fallibroome Academy in Macclesfield, UK and to over 150 invited students from local schools. We live stream our conference around the world and our theme is ‘Reset’ and the exciting programme includes brilliant speakers, and stunning student performances. Holly Baxter is the 25 year old co-founder and editor of The Vagenda, an online media satire magazine for women, as well as author of the Vagenda book, which came out earlier this year. She is also a columnist for the Guardian and a freelance journalist for a number of other national publications. She is the previous resident of an airing cupboard. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. It can be agreed on that we as a society put way too much trust into the media. From news, television shows, documentaries, and more, we assume that what we watch and read nowadays is true. Because critical thinking seems to be a dying art, more and more people are becoming easily fooled and proving to be gullible when it comes to information being presented to us. Only a hand full of people today actually investigate and research the facts anymore, while the vast majority of the population will take everything as truth and turn off the television.
Since the inception of the internet, it is easier than ever to spread false information, especially if it seems to come from a legitimate news source. Anyone who doesn’t know any better and know what websites to avoid if you want factual information can fall victim to believe false information. What’s worse than merely believing the stories is spreading them around and unknowingly planting the seeds of deception to a wider audience. Thanks to viral marketing, the media can do a decent amount of work to troll the world and cause us all to believe in the wrong information. The ultimate cost of these actions is leading people into mass hysteria and frenzy, thus causing chaos and the unraveling of society as we know it.
So, how much faith should we put into the media nowadays? That can be hard to tell, because sometimes the most accurate media outlets are not the most popular. These days, the media can be easily bought out by major corporations and politicians and can easily sway people into the appropriate direction that they want. One media outlet that regularly gets accused of misleading people on purpose is Fox News, given how conservative and right wing the station is.
This video contains ten times that that media has trolled us. We will primarily mention the incidents where people were fooled into believing false information that was presented as true. Even if the “truth” was in the fine print, it was subtle enough to be missed on purpose. You can say that the 1938 radio drama of “War of the Worlds” was what exposed the fact that the public audience is gullible. Despite announcements at the beginning of the show that stated that the broadcast was a drama, most people tuned in too late and missed the announcement. Thinking that the earth was being invaded by aliens, people were sent into chaos. What many people saw as chaos and disruption, the media saw it as an opportunity to commit some class A trolling on the public.
Hollywood can also make us believe things that don’t actually exist, like mermaids. The docufiction film, “Mermaids” cause thousands to believe that mermaids were actually real. The documentary was so well done, with actors playing researchers and scientists, plus airing on Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel, there are people who now use the documentary to defend the fact that mermaids are real.

Why does the media cover Donald Trump so much? It's a question I've been asked a lot over the course of the primary season. The answer is, in part, that it's increasingly likely he'll be the Republican Party nominee for president and so he surely deserves a lot of coverage. But many people feel like the media's Trump obsession is the cause of his rise, making this illegitimate as an explanation. So here's another view: The media covers Trump a lot because Trump's campaign is fascinating and people are interested in it. Here at Vox, for example, 13 percent of the stories we published in February mentioned Trump, which is a lot. But that 13 percent generated 26 percent of our total readership. And to state the obvious, this wasn't a big, deliberate strategy of ours from the beginning or anything. When we were doling out assignments last summer for which writers were going to sum up which candidates' positions on the issues, the Trump write-up went to one of our interns, Tez Clark.
Tez was a stellar intern, but that's also a clear reminder that we were not initially thinking Trump would be the frontrunner or the subject of a ton of coverage.
And all that's to say nothing of a Trump video we made that got 32 million views.
This basic dynamic is one reason I'm skeptical that Trump's magic will transfer to a general election.

A technique used to avoid bias is the "point/counterpoint" or "round table", an adversarial format in which representatives of opposing views comment on an issue. This approach theoretically allows diverse views to appear in the media. However, the person organizing the report still has the responsibility to choose people who really represent the breadth of opinion, to ask them non-prejudicial questions, and to edit or arbitrate their comments fairly. When done carelessly, a point/counterpoint can be as unfair as a simple biased report, by suggesting that the "losing" side lost on its merits.
Using this format can also lead to accusations that the reporter has created a misleading appearance that viewpoints have equal validity (sometimes called "false balance"). This may happen when a taboo exists around one of the viewpoints, or when one of the representatives habitually makes claims that are easily shown to be inaccurate.
One such allegation of misleading balance came from Mark Halperin, political director of ABC News. He stated in an internal e-mail message that reporters should not "artificially hold George W. Bush and John Kerry 'equally' accountable" to the public interest, and that complaints from Bush supporters were an attempt to "get away with ... renewed efforts to win the election by destroying Senator Kerry." When the conservative web site the Drudge Report published this message, many Bush supporters viewed it as "smoking gun" evidence that Halperin was using ABC to propagandize against Bush to Kerry's benefit, by interfering with reporters' attempts to avoid bias. An academic content analysis of election news later found that coverage at ABC, CBS, and NBC was more favorable toward Kerry than Bush, while coverage at Fox News Channel was more favorable toward Bush.
Scott Norvell, the London bureau chief for Fox News, stated in a May 20, 2005 interview with the Wall Street Journal that:
"Even we at Fox News manage to get some lefties on the air occasionally, and often let them finish their sentences before we club them to death and feed the scraps to Karl Rove and Bill O'Reilly. And those who hate us can take solace in the fact that they aren't subsidizing Bill's bombast; we payers of the BBC license fee don't enjoy that peace of mind.

He gained international recognition for his Fox News interview that went viral, and more recently, Aslan’s nuanced response to Bill Maher’s rant.
After a sold out event at last year’s Indian Summer Festival, Aslan returned to Vancouver to unpack the arguments around religion and violence. Touching on a range of topics from identity to ISIS, Aslan argues that no religion exists in a vacuum. Every faith is rooted in the soil in which it is planted.

Israel is facing a global image problem - and once again the state is blaming the media.
Over the past month, the Knesset has summoned foreign journalists to defend themselves against accusations of bias, particularly around their coverage of the protracted violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
For the domestic media, there has also been a tightening of controls since Arielle Ben Avraham was appointed the new chief military censor. Avraham recently issued a directive ordering news organisations, digital outlets, bloggers and even certain Facebook users to run stories about national security past military censors before publishing or posting.
All of this is happening while Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doubles up as communications minister, showing how the Likud Party sees controlling the media narrative as critical to the wellbeing of its government.
Talking us through the story are: Lahav Harkov Levine, a reporter at the Jerusalem Post; Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, the editor-in-chief at +972 Magazine; Uri Blau, a journalist; and Luke Baker, the Reuters bureau chief and head of the Foreign Press Association.

Almost 22 years after the end of the Apartheid regime in South Africa, transformation of the country's media is still a work in progress.
In terms of numbers, the media sector has done relatively well compared to other influential sectors in redressing inequalities. However, questions of ownership and the way the country is reported on remain.
The Listening Post's Nic Muirhead went to South Africa to investigate the transformation issue in the country's media.
Finally, President Xi Jinping's state media tour was TV gold - but one of the most theatrical moments didn't take place on camera - it came after the president visited the newsrooms of the Xinhua news agency. A deputy editor at Xinhua, Pu Liye, posted a poem in praise of the president on his WeChat account and Chinese web users had a field day with the poem long after it went viral. It was written in Mandarin, so we had it translated and read out, accompanied by a few pictures of the president on his media tour.
