"I am impressed by the number of phone calls and e-mails, and then the conversations, how many people in
Israel in these days they told me 'we went to the synagogue to pray for the health of the
Pope', but I have to tell you that I received the same messages from many Muslims. Of course those who are more linked in this moment and who are living with great emotion this moment are the

STORYLINE
Cardinals meeting in Jerusalem on Friday afternoon said their thoughts and prayers were with the ailing pope
John Paul II, as the pontiff remained gravely ill in his papal apartments in the Vatican.
Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, Archbishop of Vienna, called
Pope John Paul II "one of the most impressive Christians of the 20th century".
At the meeting, Monsignor Pietro Sambi, Vatican ambassador to Israel and Cyprus, said he was touched by the many phone calls and emails he had received - from Christians,
Jews and Muslims alike - expressing their concern for the Pope's deteriorating health and saying they would pray for him.
Meanwhile in Bethlehem in the
West Bank, prayers for the Pope were held at the Church of the Nativity.
Pilgrims visiting the church expressed concern over his deteriorating health.
A special mass for the pope will be held on Saturday at the church.
