Writing a Summary - http://www.singlishtoenglish.com/writing-a-summary/ - writing process for kids
In this video. I give you 5 easy steps for writing a summary.
1. Do a quick read of the passage, taking note of the story content as you do this. Understand what the story is about.
2. Read the passage again, highlighting ONLY the main points in each paragraph and the main characters. Minor details and explanations should be left out of summary writing. It might be a good idea to highlight the main characters in a different color from the main points of the passage. Less confusing.
3. Take note of the what, when, where, and who of the passage.
4. Write out your summary based on these notes.
5. Check your summary, make changes as needed and if there is a word count, check you are within the word limit
If there is a word count, then you must not go over that at all. It's best if the word count for the summary is as close to as possible to the maximum number of words given. This will mean your summary content is accurate. Eg: Word count is 120 words. Your summary should not exceed this or fall way short. Best is to have a summary of around 115 to 118 words.

What? (What happens in each paragraph of the passage?) :
Beginning - On the first day, the chambermaid saw one of my mice in my hotel room and shrieked loudly.
Middle - I was reported to Mr Stringer, the hotel manager. There was an unpleasant scene with Mr Stringer, Grandma and me.
End - Mr Stringer would not allow mice in the hotel. Grandma said the hotel was full of rats. Mr Stringer said there weren't any rats in the hotel but Grandma said that she saw one that morning.
The full summary as written:
On the first day, the chambermaid saw one of my mice in my hotel room and shrieked loudly. I was reported to Mr Stringer, the hotel manager. There was an unpleasant scene with Mr Stringer, Grandma and me. Mr Stringer would not allow mice in the hotel. Grandma said the hotel was full of rats anyway. A summary condenses the author’s main purpose and support so that someone else gets the information as it was intended. Plus, you avoid sounding as if you’re making it up.
Step 1: Scan the text
Scan the text and make notes on paper. Read closely to absorb the author’s tone and central ideas, and then comb back through to clarify points.
Step 2: Outline the idea
Outline the main idea of each section in your own words. Include only meaningful details and proofs, organizing them from most to least important.
Step 3: Develop your thesis
Develop a thesis, summarizing the main points of the piece. Be sure to include the author’s name and the title of the work right away.
Tip
Avoid using your own opinions or interpretations, no matter how familiar the subject may be.
Step 4: Arrange information
Arrange the information to clearly support the author's points, adding details to each section. Improve the flow of ideas with transitions that connect sections.
Step 5: Cite properly
Be sure that sources are cited properly. Paraphrase and don’t use the author’s words if you can help it. Make sure you haven’t wandered off topic.
Tip
Ask who, what, why, when, where, and how questions to be sure you have represented the author’s work faithfully.
Step 6: Make final corrections
Correct your grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Dignify your work and that of your subject’s with the care good scholarship demands.
Step 7: Ask for criticism
Ask a hyper-critical friend to read your work. Be receptive and not over-sensitive – if they can’t identify your main points, you need to revise.

Huckleberry Finn
Huckleberry "Huck" Finn is a fictional character created by Mark Twain who first appeared in the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and is the protagonist and narrator of its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (taking place after The Adventures of Tom Sawyer). He is 12 or 13 years old during the former and a year older ("thirteen or fourteen or along there," Chapter 17) at the time of the latter. Huck also narrates Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective, two shorter sequels to the first two books.
Huckleberry
Huckleberry "Huck" Finn is the son of the town's vagrant drunkard, "Pap" Finn. Sleeping on doorsteps when the weather is fair, in empty hogsheads during storms, and living off of what he receives from others, Huck lives the life of a destitute vagabond. The author metaphorically names him "the juvenile pariah of the village" and describes Huck as "idle, and lawless, and vulgar, and bad," qualities for which he was admired by all the children in the village, although their mothers "cordially hated and dreaded" him.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (or, in more recent editions, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Set in a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about 20 years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing satire on entrenched attitudes, particularly racism.
Perennially popular with readers, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has also been the continued object of study by literary critics since its publication. It was criticized upon release because of its coarse language and became even more controversial in the 20th century because of its perceived use of racial stereotypes and because of its frequent use of the racial slur "nigger", despite strong arguments that the protagonist and the tenor of the book are anti-racist.

1. Do a quick read of the passage, taking note of the story content as you do this. Understand what the story is about.
2. Read the passage again, highlighting ONLY the main points in each paragraph and the main characters. Minor details and explanations should be left out of summary writing. It might be a good idea to highlight the main characters in a different color from the main points of the passage. Less confusing.
3. Take note of the what, when, where, and who of the passage.
4. Write out your summary based on these notes.
5. Check your summary, make changes as needed and if there is a word count, check you are within the word limit
If there is a word count, then you must not go over that at all. It's best if the word count for the summary is as close to as possible to the maximum number of words given. This will mean your summary content is accurate. Eg: Word count is 120 words. Your summary should not exceed this or fall way short. Best is to have a summary of around 115 to 118 words.

What? (What happens in each paragraph of the passage?) :
Beginning - On the first day, the chambermaid saw one of my mice in my hotel room and shrieked loudly.
Middle - I was reported to Mr Stringer, the hotel manager. There was an unpleasant scene with Mr Stringer, Grandma and me.
End - Mr Stringer would not allow mice in the hotel. Grandma said the hotel was full of rats. Mr Stringer said there weren't any rats in the hotel but Grandma said that she saw one that morning.
The full summary as written:
On the first day, the chambermaid saw one of my mice in my hotel room and shrieked loudly. I was reported to Mr Stringer, the hotel manager. After a rather quiet winter, the war erupts into action in 1917. Not only do the United States join the war after weeks of unrestricted submarine warfare and the uncovering of the Zimmermann Telegram. The British and French launch their own spring offensives. In the East, chaos spreads in post-revolutionary Russia and Lenin returns from exile. And in Mesopotamia the British take Baghdad.

In this video. I give you 5 easy steps for writing a summary.
1. Do a quick read of the passage, taking note of the story content as you do this. Understand what the story is about.
2. Read the passage again, highlighting ONLY the main points in each paragraph and the main characters. Minor details and explanations should be left out of summary writing. It might be a good idea to highlight the main characters in a different color from the main points of the passage. Less confusing.
3. Take note of the what, when, where, and who of the passage.
4. Write out your summary based on these notes.

A summary condenses the author’s main purpose and support so that someone else gets the information as it was intended. Plus, you avoid sounding as if you’re making it up.
Step 1: Scan the text
Scan the text and make notes on paper. Read closely to absorb the author’s tone and central ideas, and then comb back through to clarify points.
Step 2: Outline the idea
Outline the main idea of each section in your own words. Include only meaningful details and proofs, organizing them from most to least important.
Step 3: Develop your thesis
Develop a thesis, summarizing the main points of the piece. Be sure to include the author’s name and the title of the work right away.
Tip
Avoid using your own opinions or interpretations, no matter how familiar the subject may be.
Step 4: Arrange information
Arrange the information to clearly support the author's points, adding details to each section. Improve the flow of ideas with transitions that connect sections.
Step 5: Cite properly
Be sure that sources are cited properly. Paraphrase and don’t use the author’s words if you can help it. Make sure you haven’t wandered off topic.
Tip

Step 6: Make final corrections

In the midst of tripping out about everything
