Train station

A train station, railway station, railroad station, or depot (see below) is a railway facility where trains regularly stop to load or unload passengers or freight.

It generally consists of at least one track-side platform and a station building (depot) providing such ancillary services as ticket sales and waiting rooms. If a station is on a single-track line, it often has a passing loop to facilitate traffic movements. The smallest stations are most often referred to as "stops" or, in some parts of the world, as "halts" (flag stops).

Stations may be at ground level, underground, or elevated. Connections may be available to intersecting rail lines or other transport modes such as buses, trams or other rapid transit systems.

Terminology

In the United States, the most common term in contemporary usage is train station. Railway station and railroad station are less frequent; also, American usage makes a distinction between the terms railroad and railway.

In Britain and other Commonwealth countries, traditional usage favours railway station or simply station, even though train station, which is often perceived as an Americanism, is now about as common as railway station in writing; railroad station is not used, railroad being obsolete there. In British usage, the word station is commonly understood to mean a railway station unless otherwise qualified.

Matunga railway station

Matunga is a railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. It should not be confused with the nearby Matunga Road railway station on the Western Line.

History

The Carriage Repair Workshop was built in 1915 in the area between the tracks of the Western and Central Lines. It was set up as a repair workshop for coaches and wagons of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway. It now carries out Periodical Overhaul (POH) and heavy corrosion repairs of main line and EMU coaches; in 2009/10 it attended 3182 coaches. In 2011 it had 7719 staff.

The neighbouring station of Matunga Road experienced terrorist bombings in 1993 and 2006 which were often described as being at "Matunga station".

Matunga

Matunga is a locality in the heart of Mumbai City towards downtown Mumbai. It is serviced by the Matunga Road station on the Western line, Matunga on the Central Line and King's Circle (officially named, Maheshwari Udyan) on the Harbour Line.

History

Matunga formed a part of the seven original islands of Mumbai with Mahim, then known as Mahikavati.

Matunga was among the first well planned localities of Mumbai. The Dadar-Matunga-Wadala-Sion plan of 1899-1900 was formulated to evenly distribute population as well as provide better living standards. Matunga has a juxtaposition of Irani cafes and Udupis and houses one of the oldest residents of Mumbai.

Educational institutions

Matunga houses the Institute of Chemical Technology (erstwhile University Department of Chemical Technology), Guru Nanak Khalsa College, R.A. Podar College, South Indian Education Society's School, Ramnarain Ruia College are some of higher education institutions located in Matunga, which are accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
