"Little Darlings" : A 15 Minute Tribute To The 1980 Film Starring Kristy McNichol & Tatum O'Neal

The summer of 1980 saw the release of this hugely popular coming of age comic drama "Little Darlings'. The film showcased the talents of Academy Award Winning actress Tatum O'Neal ("Paper Moon") and inparticular Kristy McNichol (of television's "Family"), who turns in a particularly remarkable performance. Two girls one rich Ferris Whitney (Tatum O'Neal), and the other streetwise Aggel Bright (Kristy McNichol), strike a bet while away at summer camp. Whoever loses their virginity first......wins $100.00. Matt Dillon (in his second big screen role), plays McNichol's love interest. Armand Assante plays a counselor and the target of O'Neal's. Music rights are most likely the culprit in the failure of this rare film's release on DVD. It remains up in the air as to if and when this will ever be released. Look for a very young Cynthia Nixon from "Sex in the City" as "Sunshine" the teenage hippie with the long blonde hair. I hope you enjoy this tribute to "Little Darlings".

The first film to be released in the decade of the 1980's was the highly controversial "Windows". It starred Talia Shire (of "Rocky" and "The Godfather" fame) and Elizabeth Ashley. Directed by Gordon Willis; the Academy Award winning cinematographer of "The Godfather", the film promised to be an interesting one. Surrounded by controversy due to the portrayal of the lesbian character in the film, and also for the violence at the beginning (during the rape scene), the film garnered some of the worst reviews in the history of cinema. It's actually a pretty good, though somewhat disturbing thriller with excellent shots of New York and superb cinematography.

Mini Biography A colossus among film lyricists, Sahir Ludhianvi was slightly different from his contemporaries. A man unable to praise Khuda (God), Husn (beauty) and/or Jaam (wine), his pen was at its best pouring out bitter but sensitive lyrics over the declining values of society, the senselessness of war and politics, and the domination of materialism over love. Whenever he wrote any love songs, they were tinged with sorrow, due to the realization that there were other, starker concepts more important than love. He could be called the underdog's bard; close to his heart were the soldier gone to fight someone's war, the woman forced to sell her body, the family living on the street and other victims of society. Born in March 8 1921 as Abdul Hayee, Sahir was the only son of a zamindar. The separation of his parents and the event of partition caused him to shuttle between India and Pakistan ...and also brought him face to face with the struggles of life. He made a living as a journalist and editor in Pakistan, but an arrest warrant from the Pakistani government of the day after publishing some unflattering articles caused him to flee to Bombay in 1949, where he began to write film songs. Sahir made his debut in film lyrics with Naujawan (1951). His first major break came the same year when he wrote the lyrics for S.D. Burman's music in Baazi (1951). The movie, directed by Guru Dutt, and its music was a success and together S.D. Burman and Sahir went on to create some of their work in Jaal (1952), House Number 44 (1955), Munimji (1955) and the immortal classic Pyaasa (1957). And although they parted ways after Pyaasa (), Sahir was now a stalwart in Bollywood and during the 1960s and 1970s he wrote outstanding lyrics for films like Hum Dono (1961) and Taj Mahal (1963). However, he mostly composed lyrics for the Chopra brothers, before and after they separated, and some of his best work was in Kabhi Kabhi (1979), which went on to break all records. He died in 1980 of a heart attack, in the midst of a card game. It was ironically appropriate; while the poet's heart bled for others, he never paid enough attention to his own life, and had a card-player nonchalance about life and death. The Young Master (Chinese: 師弟出馬) is a 1980 Hong Kong martial arts action film directed by and starring Jackie Chan as Dragon. The film is notable for being the first that Jackie Chan worked on for Golden Harvest, and despite being his second film as director (his first was The Fearless Hyena), this is often incorrectly credited as his directorial debut. It was co-written by Chan and King Sang Tang and produced by Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho. As is common with Jackie Chan's films, the fight scenes involve the use of many different weapons including poles, a rope, fans, benches and swords. Dragon Lord is supposedly the sequel to The Young Master and was even originally called Young Master in Love, as confirmed by Jackie Chan in his book.

This is the alternate version of "The Way We Were". This upload is the actual LIVE recording of this, which Barbra performed in 1980 at a Tribute for Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Another cut of this alternate is on Barbra's retrospective album (4-CD set), Just For The Record, but it was dubbed and "cleaned up". I live this live version better! More notes are below if you'd like. I also added some pictures from the film just for something to look at while you listen. *When Barbra says "Sydney", she's referring to Sydney Pollack (who is in the audience), the Director of The Way We Were. He is also pictured around :35 (I think) along with Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand (a picture of the three of them). *Barbra and the Bergmans preferred this alternate version rather than the original, but Marvin Hamlisch (the composer) preferred the one we all know so well. Marvin won when they decided to play each version against the last scene of the film. The one we all know...the one that "made it" was a better fit. Everyone agreed in the end! *Barbra was signed to the film before a leading man and she desperately wanted to star with Redford. But Redford read the script and hated it, refusing to agree to play the role. That's when Sydney Pollack was brought in as the Director specifically because he and Redford were friend in real life. Sydney "beat him down" and they even changed the script to make the character of Hubbell more to Redford's liking. At the VERY last minute, Redford agreed. Barbra was in Africa filming "Up The Sandbox" and thought that all was lost in getting Redford. But her agent sent her a telegram with only two words... "Barbra Redford" and she KNEW what it meant and was ecstatic. People say this pairing of Streisand and Redford was one of the best because their chemistry was beyond almost any other onscreen couple. I agree!
