In this video, I will be reviewing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore (42mm Stainless Steel) and the Rolex Submariner Gold (40mm Solid Gold). Both of these luxury watches have their unique differences in terms of look and status level. The Rolex Sub being reviewed sports a classic look taken up a notch – an all gold design. The AP is in the same price range as the Rolex (around $15 k), but its design is very unique and contemporary.
If you're venturing into the world of luxury watches for the first time, you'll probably favor the gold Rolex because it makes a louder statement. However, as time goes by, you may get a bit tired of it and decide that you don't want to wear something so flashy all the time. This is where the Audemars comes in. Constructed out of stainless steel, the AP is a more understated watch, but one with a lot more character – perfect the watch connoisseur. Nevertheless, you must take something into consideration about the AP. Being a watch that is prone to scratches, I would not recommend it for the first time wearer. You need to have to have some practice under your belt before you wear this watch.
The gold Submariner, on the other hand, is a beautiful watch, but not one you may want to wear all the time. A gold Rolex Sub is also a watch that's relatively rarer than other more famous Rolex models, like the President or Yacht-Master.
When it comes to investment potential, both of these watches are safe bets. AP is the next level after Rolex and before Patek Philippe. It can hold its value just as well or even better than a Rolex. After all is said and done, my personal preference is definitely the AP Offshore.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph. This is a watch that is so known to many of you, it may not need much of an analysis -- but this is HODINKEE and you can believe you're gonna get one. The Royal Oak Chronograph is a watch that has thousands of lovers the world over, and a few detractors, too. The ROC, as I'll call it henceforth, is something of a middle ground between two completely distinct Audemars Piguet buyers -- the collectors, and, well, everyone else. The Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore families often appeal to very different people, but I'll get to that shortly. In this review, I tackle a mainstay in the AP lineup, and an interesting piece of haute horology, though one without its own in-house movement. I will look at how this 41mm column-wheel, vertical clutch chronograph wears, and if the matter of where the movement came from is even something worth noting at all. Audemars Piguet (AP) (French pronunciation: [odmaʁ piɡɛ]) is a manufacturer of prestigious Swiss watches which compete with Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin.
The roots of Audemars Piguet date back to 1874, when the 23-year-old Jules Louis Audemars met Edward Auguste Piguet, then only 21, at Vallée de Joux, which is considered to be the cradle of prestige watch-making. Their hometown was Le Brassus. When they graduated from school they went to Vallée de Joux to start working in their favorite field of watch manufacturing.
Thus Audemars started producing component parts for movements and Piguet got the job of a repasseur, whose job it was to make the final regulation of the timepiece. In 1875 they founded a firm later known as Audemars, Piguet et Cie.
Since 1882, members of the Audemars and Piguet families have always been on the board of directors and have thus directly or indirectly run the company.
The business started with Audemars managing the production and technical part and Piguet focusing on sales, and success was not immediate. The Audemars Piguet trademark was registered in 1882, however it would be seven years later that the company was officially founded. At this point Audemars Piguet et Cie became one of the largest employers for watch-making in the whole of Vaud, southwestern Switzerland.

In this video, I will be reviewing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore (42mm Stainless Steel) and the Rolex Submariner Gold (40mm Solid Gold). Both of these luxury watches have their unique differences in terms of look and status level. The Rolex Sub being reviewed sports a classic look taken up a notch – an all gold design. The AP is in the same price range as the Rolex (around $15 k), but its design is very unique and contemporary.
If you're venturing into the world of luxury watches for the first time, you'll probably favor the gold Rolex because it makes a louder statement. However, as time goes by, you may get a bit tired of it and decide that you don't want to wear something so flashy all the time. This is where the Audemars comes in. Constructed out of stainless steel, the AP is a more understated watch, but one with a lot more character – perfect the watch connoisseur. Nevertheless, you must take something into consideration about the AP. Being a watch that is prone to scratches, I would not recommend it for the first time wearer. You need to have to have some practice under your belt before you wear this watch.
The gold Submariner, on the other hand, is a beautiful watch, but not one you may want to wear all the time. A gold Rolex Sub is also a watch that's relatively rarer than other more famous Rolex models, like the President or Yacht-Master.
When it comes to investment potential, both of these watches are safe bets. AP is the next level after Rolex and before Patek Philippe. It can hold its value just as well or even better than a Rolex. After all is said and done, my personal preference is definitely the AP Offshore.
