In physics, tension is (magnitude of) the pulling force exerted by a string, cable, chain, or similar solid object on another object. It results from the net electrostatic attraction between the particles in a solid when it is deformed so that the particles are further apart from each other than when at equilibrium, where this force is balanced by repulsion due to electron shells; as such, it is the pull exerted by a solid trying to restore its original, more compressed shape. Tension is the opposite of compression.
As tension is the magnitude of a force, it is measured in newtons (or sometimes pounds-force) and is always measured parallel to the string on which it applies. There are two basic possibilities for systems of objects held by strings: Either acceleration is zero and the system is therefore in equilibrium, or there is acceleration and therefore a net force is present. Note that a string is assumed to have negligible mass.
A system is in equilibrium when the sum of all forces is zero.

Plastic response of materials is important in a wide range of problems in our industry, from the slip crushing of drill pipes and steam well casing cycling to sand production and casing compaction in depleted reservoirs. The Klever-Stewart tension burst limit in the ISO TR 10400 and API 5C3 are based on some of the principles of plasticity. The brittle burst equation and the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) in these standards are based on principles of fracture mechanics.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Walkthrough Gameplay Part 35 - The Crones

The world is in chaos. The air is thick with tension and the smoke of burnt villages. The fearsome Empire of Nilfgaard has struck again, ravaging the hapless Northern Kingdoms. The once-mighty who tried to use Geralt for their own gain are now gone. In these uncertain times, no one can say what fortune holds in store, who will bring peace to the world and who will cause it only misery. But a force darker and deadlier emerges. The petty men and women commanding tin-plated armies fail to understand that their conflict is child’s play compared to the Wild Hunt, the otherworldly threat which now looms. These ghastly spectral riders have for ages plagued humankind, bringing misery to the world. Yet this time the Wild Hunt seeks one person in particular: the one individual Destiny itself bestowed upon Geralt, the one soul Geralt considers kin.
The climactic third game in the fantasy RPG series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a unique combination of a non-linear story and an open world -- a character-driven, non-linear story experience focused on player choice, tactical combat and a rich, living environment. This world is populated with intelligent inhabitants and animated by new mechanics that make it a dynamic, living, breathing place. As players travel the world, witnessing many a sunrise or sunset, enduring torrential rains or sweltering heat, they see predators hunting their prey, villages defending themselves against monsters, lovers meeting by moonlight. The new in-game economy system varies the price of goods based on surrounding conditions or their place of origin, encouraging players to seek out through hunting and collecting items that are in demand. With a re-envisioned approach to the narrative, the game will be accessible to both newcomers and old time fans, and a tutorial eases players into the game. Combat has been redesigned in order to combine traditional RPG elements with the speed and precision of a dedicated fighting game. All of these gameplay features are integrated into a robust RPG system at the heart of the game.

Stability Lecture by Paul R Paslay, P.E.
Mechanical Engineer
Manatee, Inc., Houston, TX, USA
Plastic response of materials is important in a wide range of problems in our industry, from the slip crushing of drill pipes and steam well casing cycling to sand production and casing compaction in depleted reservoirs. The Klever-Stewart tension burst limit in the ISO TR 10400 and API 5C3 are based on some of the principles of plasticity. The brittle burst equation and the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) in these standards are based on principles of fracture mechanics.
Dr Paul Paslay presents the principles necessary to analyze and understand these problems in a set of 9 hour multi-media lectures. To pay a tribute to Rice University professor emeritus Dr. Paul Paslay and his contributions to both academia and industry, Blade Energy developed this multimedia lecture series on the subject, as presented by Paul.
Dr. Paslay is a renowned expert in the field of Plasticity, and many at Blade are proud to call him both a mentor and a friend. Paul received his education from LSU , Rice University, and MIT (1947-1955). After four years at General Electric’s General Engineering Laboratory he held faculty positions at Rice U., Brown U., Oakland U. and U. of Illinois at Chicago (1959-1978). Since 1978 he has provided technical expertise to oil and gas companies such as Shell, Exxon, BP and Apache.
Paul has made lasting contributions to almost all the major areas of mechanical engineering, from applied mechanics and elasticity to heat transfer of non-Newtonian fluids. In the oil industry, his work on the stability of drill pipe is considered a classic. It is used by well designers, almost on a daily basis.
