Genome sequencing of myxozoans has determined that the parasitic creatures are microscopic jellyfish—challenging our definition of what an animal is.
A common aquatic parasite, long-studied for its devastating impact on commercial fishing, is essentially a microscopic jellyfish.
Researchers from the University of Kansas, or KU, sequenced the genome of myxozoans and discovered the parasites are "highly reduced" cnidarians—belonging to the same phylum as jellyfish, sea anemones and corals.
The team also discovered that myxozoa have an extremely small genome, several orders of magnitude less complex than typical jellyfish.
One thing they do have in common is their stinger.
Paulyn Cartwright, the project's principal investigator, explained, “Because they’re so weird, it's difficult to imagine they were jellyfish. They don’t have a mouth or a gut. They have just a few cells. But then they have this complex structure that looks just like stinging cell of cnidarian.”
Originally considered single-celled organisms, myxozoa, are rewriting the biological textbook.
That’s because the parasites lack a certain type of gene previously believed necessary for animal development.
But Cartwright is adamant, "Myxozoa is definitely an animal because its evolutionary origin is shared with jellyfish, and we use species’ ancestry to define them. But animals are usually defined as macroscopic multicellular organisms, and this is not that. Myxozoa absolutely redefines what we think of as animal.”

MADRID.- Una medusa que vive dentro de otros animales ha evolucionado a organismo microscópico de unas pocas células. Un descubrimiento sorprendente que puede redefinir el significado del término animal.
La secuenciación del genoma confirma que myxozoans, un grupo diverso de parásitos microscópicos que infectan invertebrados y vertebrados anfitriones, son en realidad una versión "muy reducida" de cnidarios, la familia que incluye medusas, corales y anémonas de mar.
"Este es un caso notable de la degeneración extrema de un plan corporal de los animales", dijo Paulyn Cartwright, profesora asociada de Ecología y Biología Evolutiva en la Universidad de Kansas e investigadora principal del estudio. "En primer lugar, hemos confirmado que son cnidarios. Ahora tenemos que investigar cómo llegaron a ser de esa manera".

Over 1300 species have been described and many have a two-host lifecycle, involving a fish and an annelid worm or bryozoan. The average size of a myxosporean spore usually ranges from 10 μm to 20 μm whereas that of a malacosporean spore can be up to 2 mm. Myxozoans can live in both fresh and marine habitats.
While the evolutionary history of myxozoans is still an active area of research, it is now understood that myxozoans have undergone dramatic evolution from a free swimming, self-sufficient jellyfish-like creature into their current form of obligate parasites composed of a mere handful of cells. As myxozoans evolved into microscopic parasites, they lost many genes responsible for multicellular development, coordination, and cell-cell communication. The genomes of some myxozoans are now among the smallest genomes of any known animal species.

MADRID.- Una medusa que vive dentro de otros animales ha evolucionado a organismo microscópico de unas pocas células. Un descubrimiento sorprendente que puede redefinir el significado del término animal.
La secuenciación del genoma confirma que myxozoans, un grupo diverso de parásitos microscópicos que infectan invertebrados y vertebrados anfitriones, son en realidad una versión "muy reducida" de cnidarios, la familia que incluye medusas, corales y anémonas de mar.
"Este es un caso notable de la degeneración extrema de un plan corporal de los animales", dijo Paulyn Cartwright, profesora asociada de Ecología y Biología Evolutiva en la Universidad de Kansas e investigadora principal del estudio. "En primer lugar, hemos confirmado que son cnidarios. Ahora tenemos que investigar cómo llegaron a ser de esa manera".
Esta medusa microparasitaria no sólo fue resultado del desarrollo de un plan corporal reducido de sólo unas pocas células, sino de una simplificación drástica de su genoma. "Es de 20 a 40 veces más pequeño que el genoma promedio de las medusas", dijo Cartwright. "Es uno de los genomas de animales más pequeños jamás reportados. Sólo tiene unos 20 millones de pares de bases, mientras que el promedio de los cnidarios tiene más de 300 millones".
A pesar de la eliminación gradual radical de la estructura del cuerpo y genoma respecto a la medusa moderna durante millones de años, Myxozoa ha conservado la característica esencial de la medusa - su aguijón, o "nematocistos" - junto con los genes necesarios para hacerlo. "Debido a que son tan raras, es difícil imaginar que fueran medusas", dijo. "No tienen una boca o un intestino. Tienen sólo unas pocas células, pero luego tienen esta estructura compleja que se parece a los tentáculos de las medusas".
Si bien el dramático cambio de animal macroscópico a parásito microscópico parece totalmente único, Cartwright piensa que podría revelar una estrategia en la naturaleza que podría ser más extendido de lo que conocía anteriormente. "Si puede ocurrir una vez en la evolución, sin duda puede volver a ocurrir", dijo.
