Alastair Sooke: the JMW Turner painting that launched modern art
JMW Turner is probably Britain's most famous painter. Constable might rival him for instant recognition, but it is Turner who each generation remakes in its image.
As Richard Dorment says in his review: "The phenomenon started in 1840 when John Ruskin, who was raised in the evangelical church, told readers of Modern Painters that Turner’s pictures should be read as moral allegories – to which Tu

The shared subject matter here makes for revealing contrast.

JMW Turner is probably Britain's most famous painter. Constable might rival him for instant recognition, but it is Turner who each generation remakes in its image.
As Richard Dorment says in his review: "The phenomenon started in 1840 when John Ruskin, who was raised in the evangelical church, told readers of Modern Painters that Turner’s pictures should be read as moral allegories – to which Turner replied that the critic 'sees more in my pictures than I ever painted.’
More than a century later another critic and painter, Lawrence Gowing, staged an exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in which he presented the great man essentially an abstract artist, thereby turning him into a precursor of Pollock and Rothko."
The new exhibition at Tate Britain, Late Turner - Painting Set Free looks at the way that Turner's health and his increasing infirmity may have affected the way he painted in his later years. It asks us to look hard at the paintings and question whether they are as the artist intended, or whether some that we most love are simply unfinished.
These are the themes that Alastair Sooke examines in this video, in which he looks in detail at Norham Castle, Sunrise, painted in 1845 and always regarded as one of the great examples of the painter's late style.
There's a lot of interest in Turner at the moment, with Mike Leigh's film Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall, about to be released on October 31. But ultimately it is in understanding the paintings and looking at them hard that we will understand a little more about the artist's intentions.
The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free, runs from September 10 until January 25. Tickets: +44 (0) 20 7887 8888; tate.org.uk

J M W TURNER, although renowned for his Oil Paintings, was also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as the "Painter of Light".
Turner travelled widely in Europe, starting with France and Switzerland, in 1802, and studying at the Louvre,in Paris, in the same year. He also made many visits to Venice.
As he grew older, Turner became more eccentric. He had few close friends except for his father, who lived with him for 30 years, eventually working as his studio assistant. His father's death in 1829 had a profound effect on him, and he was, from this time, subject to bouts of depression.
In his later years, he used oils ever more transparently, and turned to an evocation of almost pure light by use of shimmering colour. The intensity of hue and interest in evanescent light not only placed Turner's work at the forefront of English Painting, but later exerted an influence upon French Art and particularly the Impressionists, like Claude Monet, who carefully studied Turner's Techniques.

Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. Joseph Mallord William "J. M. W." Turner, RA (23 April 1775 -- 19 December 1851) was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.[1] Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.

The recent Hockney on Turner Watercolours, sponsored by B.P. at the Clore Gallery, Tate Britain earlier this year provoked strong interest -- an excellent time to recall the watercolor landscapes of Petar Tale, the Montenegrin born Norwegian artist. The shared subject matter here makes for revealing contrast.
J.M.W. Turner's work anticipates later 20C developments in art. The work of Petar Tale, often measuring 1 x 1.5 metres, demonstrates that the golden age of watercolor is alive and more to the point kicking. Visit http://www.talemuseum.com

Joseph Mallord William "J. M. W." Turner, RA (baptized 14 May 1775 – 19 December 1851) was an English Romanticist landscape painter, water-colorist, and print-maker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivaling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolor landscape painting. He is commonly known as "the painter of light" and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism. Some of his works are cited as examples of abstract art prior to its recognition in the early 20th century.

Has it been cold enough for you? Last week, a winter blizzard hit the East Coast of the United States, bringing with it record-setting snowfall. Extreme cold weather has also hit China nationwide, with many cities blanketed in snow. Here in Hong Kong on Sunday, the temperature plunged to the coldest in almost 60 years. Much of the world has been facing new extremes of climate, and those extremes and the possible role of climate change in creating them have been much on the minds of many artists, including the American artist and architect, Maya Lin. In part two, we’ll be looking at her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. And the answer, my friend, will be blowing in the hopefully not-so-chilly wind as the four members of local harmonica quartet Veloz, who’ve known each other since secondary school, will be in our studio with their harmonicas, and talking to us about their music.
But first, Britain’s Turner Prize, named after the painter J. M. W. Turner, is usually awarded to a British visual artist under the age of 50 for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of their work in the preceding twelve months. 2015’s prize went not to an individual artist but to a collective called “Assemble”. The 18-member group, made up of architects from East London, are the first “non-artists” to win the award. Assemble works on in-situ community projects with residents of specific communities. As one of their members has said: “Art is inherently political, and so are we.” Live in a city and you almost certainly live with pollution. But the pollution isn’t only in our air, water, or food. Even light can be unwanted. At Artistree until the end of this month, a a group of architects and designers is trying to encourage us to take a more natural approach to light, even in the cities that never sleep.
Architect and artist Maya Lin is best known for her 1982 design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. She grew up in rural Ohio, and says she’s been inspired by nature and the environment since she was young. Her work includes large-scale environmental installations, intimate studio artworks, and architectural projects. On show at Pace Gallery till the middle of March is Lin’s first Hong Kong solo exhibition. On show are “Disappearing Bodies of Water”, “Fractured Landscape” and “Pin River” series, and two new wall pieces.
The members of the harmonica quartet Veloz, who have known each other since secondary school, founded the group five years ago. Its repertoire ranges from folk to pop. They’re here with Ben Pelletier.

Andrew Graham-Dixon explores how a group of 19th-century architects and artists spurned the modern age and turned to Britain's medieval past to create iconic works and buildings.
Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA was an English Romanticist landscape painter. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.
Rain, Steam, and Speed - The Great Western Railway.
The scene is fairly certainly identifiable as Maidenhead railway bridge, across the Thames between Taplow and Maidenhead. The bridge, which was begun on Brunel's design in 1837 and finished in 1839, has two main arches of brick, very wide and flat. The view is to the east, towards London.

Henry Vaughan was a distinguished and generous Victorian collector of art, who had inherited a fortune from his father, a wealthy hat maker. Vaughan met JMW Turner in the 1840s and built a collection of the artist’s drawings and watercolours which spanned his entire career. Inspired by John Ruskin to bequeath artworks to public collections, Vaughan gave pieces to a number of museums and galleries across Britain, including the National Galleries of Scotland. Aware of the importance of conserving watercolours, which easily fade if over-exposed to light, he stipulated that the watercolours be ‘exhibited to the public all at one time free of charge during the month of January’. At all other times they were to be kept in a special cabinet in the Print Room.
In this video, Charlotte Topsfield, Senior Curator of British Drawings and Prints at the Scottish National Gallery, discusses the work of JMW Turner and his connections to Scotland.

Composer: Frédéric Chopin (1810 – 1849) | Painter: J. M. W. Turner (1775 – 1851) | Pianist: Vadim Chaimovich
The Prelude Op. 28, No. 15, by Frédéric Chopin, known as the "Raindrop" prelude, is one of the 24 Chopin preludes.
Some, though not all, of Opus 28 was written during Chopin and George Sand's stay at a monastery in Valldemossa, Majorca in 1838. In her Histoire de ma vie, Sand related how one evening she and her son Maurice, returning from Palma in a terrible rainstorm, found a distraught Chopin who exclaimed, "Ah! I knew well that you were dead." While playing his piano he had a dream:
"He saw himself drowned in a lake. Heavy drops of icy water fell in a regular rhythm on his breast, and when I made him listen to the sound of the drops of water indeed falling in rhythm on the roof, he denied having heard it. He was even angry that I should interpret this in terms of imitative sounds. He protested with all his might – and he was right to – against the childishness of such aural imitations. His genius was filled with the mysterious sounds of nature, but transformed into sublime equivalents in musical thought, and not through slavish imitation of the actual external sounds."
Sand did not say which prelude Chopin played for her on that occasion, but most music critics assume it to be no. 15, because of the repeating A flat, with its suggestion of the "gentle patter" of rain. Peter Dayan, however points out that Sand accepted Chopin's protests that the prelude was not an imitation of the sound of raindrops, but a translation of natures harmonies within Chopin's "génie". Frederick Niecks says that the prelude "rises before one's mind the cloistered court of the monastery of Valdemosa, and a procession of monks chanting lugubrious prayers, and carrying in the dark hours of night their departed brother to his last resting-place... Toronto-based agency The Collective put together a fantastic pitch for the AGO to launch their upcoming JMW Turner Exhibit and reached out to us to bring the storyboard to life through graphic animation.
The Challenge
Stand out from the noise! Broadcast commercial spots need to draw audiences in right from the start and quickly divulge all the necessary details.
The Q-Lution
Design custom graphic animations that would ensure this 15 second spot grabbed eyeballs. In conjunction with a powerful VO and dramatic music, this spot clearly and quickly conveys the messaging, while still being memorable.

Joseph Mallord William "J. M. W." Turner, RA (23 April 1775 -- 19 December 1851) was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Mike Leigh and the cast of "Mr. Turner" discuss the film at a press conference during the 52nd New York Film Festival.
A portrait of the great painter J.M.W. Turner and his time, but also an extremely clear-eyed film about art and its creation, and the great human problem of sharing a life with other people. Featuring a remarkable performance from director Mike Leigh’s frequent collaborator, Timothy Spall.

Q&A; with Timothy Spall of MR. TURNER. Moderated by Tim Grierson, Backstage.
SYNOPSIS
The film explores the last quarter century of the great ifeccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies.
Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the countryaristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the RoyalAcademy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he canpaint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and byroyalty.

Timothy Spall is one of those faces and voices you know so well, but might night be able to recall his name... that is, unless you know Mike Leigh's work. They have collaborated for over 30 years.
