lRWlN COREY is a product of the night clubs, bistros and radio, where he has been practicing his special brand of surrealistic comedy under the soubriquet "The World's Foremost Authority." He is proud of the fact that he and his five brothers and sisters are alumni of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum, and that he is the former 112-pound boxing champion of the Civilian Conservation Corps. A minor role in "Pots and Pans," a borscht circuit production, whetted his appetite for the stage. Irwin's night club career began with an appearance at the Village Vanguard and the past master of the non-sequitor has broken records for long runs at the Ruban Bleu, The Cotillion Room, the Copacabana, and Chicago's Palmer House. On the radio, Mr. Corey has starred on the Edgar Bergen and the Ballantine Radio Shows. His first appearance in a musical comedy was in the U.S.O. presentation of "Oklahoma" in Europe, in which he took over Joseph Buloff's role as the peddler Ali Hakim, and he has subsequently been seen in "Heaven on Earth" and "Happy as Larry" on Broadway, and as the zany genie, Abou Ben Atom, in "Fla-hooley," by Yip Harburg ("Finnian's Rainbow" and "Over The Rainbow,") and Mrs. McThing. Off-Broadway he played the title role in The Good Soldier Schweik. In the 70's he played Marlo Thomas's father in the Herb Gardner play THIEVES and followed it by reprising his role in the Paramount film of the play.
In the words of internationally known theatre critic Kenneth Tynan, Corey is "a cultural clown, a parody of literacy, a travesty of all that our civilization holds dear and one of the funniest grotesques in America. He is Chaplin's clown with a college education."
Corey gained prominence in television on the talk shows of Steve Allan, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Ed Sullivan. On Jackie Gleason's show as a regular with Jayne Mansfield and Frank Fontaine. He did the Martha Rey Show, Sgt. Bilko, Andy Griffith, Andy Williams, "Doc" Bernard Hughs tv series, The Smother's Brothers, and Others in scripted shows. And all the rest of the Talk Shows from Dick Cavette, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Pat Boon (Co-host for 1 week) Woody Woodberry, Joe Franklyn, to David Letterman, and I forget the rest... In radio he was Charlie McCarthy's tutor, and some people believe he was hiding in Fibber MaGee's closet.
After a 10 year hiatus from the Broadway stage, the Professor was "Sylvester Sly" in TAMING OF THE SHREW and the Gravedigger in HAMLET for Zoe Caldwell (director) at the Stratford Shakespere Festival. COREY'S film carrer started again in the past few years with JACK, I'M
NOT RAPPAPORT, and most recently, THE CURSE OF THE JADE SCORPION.

"Professor" Irwin Corey (born July 29, 1914) is an American comic, film actor and activist, often billed as "The World's Foremost Authority". He introduced his unscripted, improvisational style of stand-up comedy at the well-known San Francisco club, the hungry i.
Lenny Bruce once described Corey as "one of the most brilliant comedians of all time".
Irwin Corey was born in 1914 in Brooklyn, New York. Poverty-stricken, his parents were forced to place their six children in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York, where Corey remained until the age of 13, when he rode the rails out to California, and enrolled himself at Belmont High School in Los Angeles. During the Great Depression, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and while working his way back East, became a featherweight Golden Gloves boxing champion.
Corey supported left-wing politics. "When I tried to join the Communist Party, they called me an anarchist." He has appeared in support of Cuban children, Mumia Abu-Jamal, and the American Communist Party, and was blacklisted in the 1950s, the effects of which he says still linger to this day. (Corey never returned to Late Night with David Letterman after his first appearance in 1982, which he claimed was a result of the blacklist still being in effect.) During the 1960 election, Corey campaigned for president on Hugh Hefner's Playboy ticket. Corey was a frequent guest on the "Tonight Show" hosted by Johnny Carson during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

This Break #1 from an unknown episode number features "Professor" Irwin Corey - from Mr. Kelly's He's a comedian who is still around! The musical directors at the club included Marty Rubenstein and Larry Novak. The location formerly occupied by Mister Kelly's is now Gibsons Steakhouse. This segment has the first reference to Berwyn by Svengoolie known to exist on tape! I'm thinking that "SYT Theater #1" as the clapboard person says, refers to the fact that it's Movie #1. (2 movies a night were shown for most of the run of SYT) According to the TV listings, the two movies shown this night were "Return From The Past" (verified by what Svengoolie himself says!) and "The Woman Who Came Back", so we can say that this aired during the former. The song you hear in the background was Svengoolie's theme song, the 1958 instrumental "Rumble" by Link Wray and his Ray Men. (with a loop of some screams added for good measure) Directed by Phil Doty. "That's to get the goyim in..." This aired on local Chicago TV on Friday, March 3rd 1972. lRWlN COREY is a product of the night clubs, bistros and radio, where he has been practicing his special brand of surrealistic comedy under the soubriquet "The World's Foremost Authority." He is proud of the fact that he and his five brothers and sisters are alumni of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum, and that he is the former 112-pound boxing champion of the Civilian Conservation Corps. A minor role in "Pots and Pans," a borscht circuit production, whetted his appetite for the stage. Irwin's night club career began with an appearance at the Village Vanguard and the past master of the non-sequitor has broken records for long runs at the Ruban Bleu, The Cotillion Room, the Copacabana, and Chicago's Palmer House. On the radio, Mr. Corey has starred on the Edgar Bergen and the Ballantine Radio Shows. His first appearance in a musical comedy was in the U.S.O. presentation of "Oklahoma" in Europe, in which he took over Joseph Buloff's role as the peddler Ali Hakim, and he has subsequently been seen in "Heaven on Earth" and "Happy as Larry" on Broadway, and as the zany genie, Abou Ben Atom, in "Fla-hooley," by Yip Harburg ("Finnian's Rainbow" and "Over The Rainbow,") and Mrs. McThing. Off-Broadway he played the title role in The Good Soldier Schweik. In the 70's he played Marlo Thomas's father in the Herb Gardner play THIEVES and followed it by reprising his role in the Paramount film of the play.
In the words of internationally known theatre critic Kenneth Tynan, Corey is "a cultural clown, a parody of literacy, a travesty of all that our civilization holds dear and one of the funniest grotesques in America. He is Chaplin's clown with a college education."
Corey gained prominence in television on the talk shows of Steve Allan, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Ed Sullivan. On Jackie Gleason's show as a regular with Jayne Mansfield and Frank Fontaine. He did the Martha Rey Show, Sgt. Bilko, Andy Griffith, Andy Williams, "Doc" Bernard Hughs tv series, The Smother's Brothers, and Others in scripted shows. And all the rest of the Talk Shows from Dick Cavette, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Pat Boon (Co-host for 1 week) Woody Woodberry, Joe Franklyn, to David Letterman, and I forget the rest... In radio he was Charlie McCarthy's tutor, and some people believe he was hiding in Fibber MaGee's closet.

Mister Kelly's was a nightclub on 1028 North Rush Street in Chicago which operated from 1957 to 1975 that specialized in live performances, notably by popular jazz artists. The musical directors at the club included Marty Rubenstein and Larry Novak.
The location formerly occupied by Mister Kelly's is now Gibsons Steakhouse.
This segment has the first reference to Berwyn by Svengoolie known to exist on tape!
I'm thinking that "SYT Theater #1" as the clapboard person says, refers to the fact that it's Movie #1. (2 movies a night were shown for most of the run of SYT)
According to the TV listings, the two movies shown this night were "Return From The Past" (verified by what Svengoolie himself says!) and "The Woman Who Came Back", so we can say that this aired during the former.

Gregory is an influential American comedian who has used his performance skills to convey to both white and black audiences his political message on civil rights. His social satire helped change the way white Americans perceived black American comedians since he first performed in public.
Gregory began his career as a comedian while serving in the military in the mid 1950s. He served in the army for a year and a half at Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Lee in Virginia and Ft. Smith in Arkansas. He was drafted in 1954 while attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After being discharged in 1956 he returned to the university but did not receive a degree. With a desire to perform comedy professionally, he moved to Chicago.[4]
In 1958, Gregory opened a nightclub called the Apex Club in Illinois. The club failed, landing Gregory in financial hardship. In 1959, Gregory landed a job as master of ceremonies at the Roberts Show Club.[5]
Gregory performed as a comedian in small, primarily black-patronized nightclubs while working for the United States Postal Service during the daytime. He was one of the first black comedians to gain widespread acclaim performing for white audiences. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Gregory describes the history of black comics as limited: "Blacks could sing and dance in the white night clubs but weren't allowed to stand flat-footed and talk to white folks, which is what a comic does."
In 1961, while working at the Black-owned Roberts Show Bar in Chicago, he was spotted by Hugh Hefner performing the following material before a largely white audience:

Last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant and this white waitress came up to me and said, "We don't serve colored people here." I said, "That's all right. I don't eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken."
Then these three white boys came up to me and said, "Boy, we're giving you fair warning. Anything you do to that chicken, we're gonna do to you". So I put down my knife and fork, I picked up that chicken and I kissed it. Then I said, "Line up, boys!"[6]
Gregory attributes the launch of his career to Hugh Hefner, who watched him perform at Herman Roberts Show Bar. Based on that performance, Hefner hired Gregory to work at the Chicago Playboy Club as a replacement for comedian Professor Irwin Corey.[7]
Gregory's first TV appearance was on the late night The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar.[citation needed] He soon began appearing nationally and on television.

Richard Claxton "Dick" Gregory (born October 12, 1932) is an American comedian, civil rights activist, social critic, conspiracy theorist, writer and entrepreneur.
Gregory is an influential American comedian who has used his performance skills to convey to both white and black audiences his political message on civil rights. His social satire helped change the way white Americans perceived black American comedians since he first performed in public.
Gregory began his career as a comedian while serving in the military in the mid 1950s. He served in the army for a year and a half at Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Lee in Virginia and Ft. Smith in Arkansas. He was drafted in 1954 while attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After being discharged in 1956 he returned to the university but did not receive a degree. With a desire to perform comedy professionally, he moved to Chicago.[4]
In 1958, Gregory opened a nightclub called the Apex Club in Illinois. The club failed, landing Gregory in financial hardship. In 1959, Gregory landed a job as master of ceremonies at the Roberts Show Club.[5]
Gregory performed as a comedian in small, primarily black-patronized nightclubs while working for the United States Postal Service during the daytime. He was one of the first black comedians to gain widespread acclaim performing for white audiences. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Gregory describes the history of black comics as limited: "Blacks could sing and dance in the white night clubs but weren't allowed to stand flat-footed and talk to white folks, which is what a comic does."
In 1961, while working at the Black-owned Roberts Show Bar in Chicago, he was spotted by Hugh Hefner performing the following material before a largely white audience:

Randy Credico was once active on the comedy circuit, and at the age of 27 he made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. During the appearance, he criticized U.S. foreign policy and compared Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick to Eva Braun; Credico was not invited back to the show, and some believe this is due to the Kirkpatrick impersonation. He was featured on the 1988 comedy album, "Strange Bedfellows: Comedy and Politics" along with Jimmy Tingle, Barry Crimmins, and Will Durst.
Credico spent four years in Tulia, Texas, bringing national attention to a racially charged mass drug arrest. The Kunstler Fund produced an award winning documentary on the subject entitled Tulia, Texas: Scenes from the drug war, written, directed and edited by Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler. Credico is the subject of the film Sixty Spins Around the Sun, directed by comedian Laura Kightlinger.
Credico produced, directed and wrote the radio program 60 Mimics, and is a frequent guest on Live from the State Capitol with Fred Dicker, a political talk radio program on WGDJ in Albany, New York.
At age 27, Credico began a seven-year campaign against New York state's Rockefeller drug laws, which he thought were too harsh, disproportionately affecting the poor and minorities. Small changes softening the stiffest penalties were passed in the state legislature, which Credico thought were insufficient. Credico is also alleged to have imitated political consultant Roger Stone's voice in a threatening phone call to the father of New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, which caused Stone to be fired as a consultant to the New York State Senate by then-majority leader Joe Bruno. Credico was able to clear his name by proving that he was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the day of the profane call to Mr. Spitzer.[2]
In 2009, Credico attended a meeting of the New York State Senate on Open Government dressed as the Greek philosopher Diogenes the Cynic, "seeking an honest politician.
Credico resigned his position with the Kunstler Fund in order to run as a Democratic primary challenger against Senator Chuck Schumer in 2010. Credico submitted petitions along with Jimmy McMillan and other candidates in an effort to get onto the Democratic Party primary ballot. The party chairman claims that Credico only submitted a few pages' worth of petitions to the state, far short of the 15,000 necessary, a charge Credico denies. Credico threatened to throw his support to Republican candidate Carl Paladino in the gubernatorial race.[3]
Credico's campaign was supported by several actors and comedians, including Seinfeld co-creator Larry David, Roseanne Barr, and "Professor" Irwin Corey. He obtained the endorsements of the Libertarian Party of New York and the nascent "Anti-Prohibition Party" of Kristin "Manhattan Madam" Davis for the same Senate seat, though those parties do not have permanent ballot access and were required to petition their way onto the ballot. Credico finished with 25,975 votes, in last place among four candidates; in most jurisdictions, Credico was only given one ballot line despite petitioning for two.
