Los habitantes del puerto chileno de Coronel fueron sorprendidos por el estruendo de los cañones a las 16:30 horas de un día domingo 1º de noviembre de 1914. En esos momentos una poderosa Escuadra alemana, al mando del Conde Graff Von Spee, se enfrentó en batalla a una Escuadra inglesa al mando del Almirante Sir Christopher Cradock. Un dramático acontecimiento que ocurrió en aguas territoriales chilenas durante el transcurso de la Primera Guerra Mundial.
La historia, que hoy recordamos con muestras de admiración y respeto por los participantes, se desarrolló un domingo como hoy hace 95 años, protagonizada por los cruceros acorazados germanos “Scharnhorst” y “Gneisenau”; los cruceros ligeros “Nuremberg”, “Dresden“ y “Leipzip”; y una Escuadra inglesa compuesta por los cruceros “Good Hope”, Monmouth”, “Glasgow” y el “Otranto”, los que luego de navegar por áreas marítimas frente a nuestro litoral, se enfrentaron frente al puerto carbonero del sur.
Después de 50 minutos de iniciada la batalla la suerte de la escuadra inglesa estaba decidida. El “Good Hope” luego de recibir entre 40 a 50 impactos directos del “Scharnhorst” voló en pedazos a causa de la explosión de la santabárbara, y luego desapareció bajo las aguas con sus 950 hombres, desde el Almirante Cradock hasta el último grumete de su dotación. Entre tanto el “Monmouth”, acribillado a tiros por el “Nuremberg”, destrozado y en llamas, se dio vuelta de campana y se hundió con sus 800 tripulantes. El “Glasgow” trató de apoyarlo por un tiempo, pero luego se retiro, mientras el “Otranto” escapaba hacía el sur.
Posteriormente al dar la vuelta por el Cabo de Hornos para atacar Puerto Stanley en las Islas Falkland, la escuadra alemana fue sorprendida el 8 de diciembre de 1914, por buques ingleses, cuyas tripulaciones se vengaron de la derrota de Coronel, hundiendo a las naves de Von Spee, con la única excepción del crucero “Dresden”, que huyó al sur y oculto en los canales chilenos, logró escapar momentáneamente del acecho inglés hasta ser hundido finalmente en Juan Fernández el 15 de marzo de 1915, poniendo término a un drama de coraje y heroísmo destacado por la prensa mundial de la época.

La batalla de Coronel o batalla del día de Todos los Santos fue un combate naval de la Primera Guerra Mundial que se libró en aguas territoriales chilenas a la altura de la Bahía de Coronel (Chile),1 entre la flota del almirante alemán Maximilian von Spee, compuesta por los cruceros acorazados Scharnhorst y Gneisenau los cruceros ligeros Leipzig, Nürnberg, Dresden y la flota británica compuesta por el Glasgow, el Crucero Monmouth, el paquebote convertido en crucero auxiliar Otranto y el Crucero Good Hope, al mando del almirante sir Christopher Cradock, en la que resultaron hundidos el Good Hope y el Monmouth el 1 de noviembre de 1914, muriendo el almirante Cradock en la batalla.
El 12 de octubre de 1914, a los cruceros alemanes SMS Scharnhorst y SMS Gneisenau se les unió en la Isla de Pascua el Leipzig, que navegaba desde la costa mexicana y el Dresden que procedía del Atlántico Sur. El 19 de octubre Von Spee dio la orden de partir e hicieron escala en las isla de Más a tierra, actual isla Robinson Crusoe, en el Archipiélago Juan Fernández. El 30 de octubre llegó a Valparaíso
Asimismo, el 14 de octubre de 1914, el contralmirante Cradock se hallaba con su flota, anclada en las islas Malvinas, cuando recibió la orden de interceptar y destruir la escuadra alemana que venía por el Pacífico. Cradock zarpó de Puerto Stanley el 22 de octubre y se dirigió con su escuadra hacia el Pacífico vía Cabo de Hornos, sin el veterano HMS Canopus, un viejo acorazado pre-dreadnought. Cradock pidió reiteradamente refuerzos al Jefe de Estado Mayor, Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee, ya que su escuadra no estaba a la par con la alemana, pero su petición fue rechazada recibiendo por respuesta: «Con lo que tiene es suficiente».
Cradock había enviado al crucero Glasgow a aprovisionarse nuevamente de carbón en Coronel y a enviar telegramas al Almirantazgo: de ello tuvo conocimiento Von Spee, quien se dirigió con sus navíos a ese puerto. El Glasgow sirvió involuntariamente de cebo, mientras Cradock buscaba al crucero alemán Leipzig, el cual radiaba insistentemente mensajes

Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher "Kit" George Francis Maurice Cradock KCVO CB SGM (2 July 1862 – 1 November 1914) was a British officer of the Royal Navy.
Cradock was born at Hartforth, Richmond, North Yorkshire. He earned a reputation for great gallantry.
He entered the Royal Navy in 1875, and saw action in the Mediterranean, serving with distinction.
In 1900 in China during the Boxer Rebellion, he commanded a mixture of British, German and Japanese sailors during the capture of the Taku forts and received the Prussian Order of the Crown with swords as a result.
Cradock was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1910. He was involved in the sea rescue of the passengers and crew of the SS Delhi in December 1911. He was awarded the KCVO in 1912. In 1913, he was given command of the North America and West Indies Station.
He was the author of three books, 'Sporting Notes in the Far East' (1889), 'Wrinkles in Seamanship' (1894), and 'Whispers From the Fleet' (1907) which contained advice for naval officers.
He was not married, but kept a dog which accompanied him at sea. He commented that he would choose to die either during an accident while hunting (this was his favourite pastime), or during action at sea.

Christopher D'Olier Reeve (September 25, 1952 – October 10, 2004) was an American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, author and activist. He achieved stardom for his acting achievements, including his notable motion picture portrayal of the fictional superhero Superman.
On May 27, 1995, Reeve became a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse in an equestrian competition in Virginia. He required a wheelchair and breathing apparatus for the rest of his life. He lobbied on behalf of people with spinal cord injuries, and for human embryonic stem cell research afterward. He founded the Christopher Reeve Foundation and co-founded the Reeve-Irvine Research Center.
Reeve married Dana Morosini in April 1992. Christopher and Dana's son, William Elliot Reeve, was born on June 7, 1992. Reeve also had two children, Matthew Exton Reeve (born 1979) and Alexandra Exton Reeve (born 1983), from his previous relationship with his longtime girlfriend, Gae Exton.
Christopher Reeve was born in New York City on September 25, 1952, the son of Barbara Pitney (née Lamb), a journalist, and Franklin D'Olier Reeve, who was a teacher, novelist, poet and scholar. His paternal grandfather, Colonel Richard Henry Reeve, had been the CEO of Prudential Financial for over twenty-five years, and his great-grandfather, Franklin D'Olier, was a prominent businessman, veteran of World War I, and the first national commander of the American Legion. Reeve's father was also descended from a sister of statesman Elias Boudinot, as well as from Massachusetts governors Thomas Dudley and John Winthrop, Pennsylvania deputy governor Thomas Lloyd, and Henry Baldwin, a US Supreme Court Justice. Reeve's mother was the granddaughter of Mahlon Pitney, another U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and was also a descendant of William Bradford, a Mayflower passenger.

El 12 de octubre de 1914, a los cruceros alemanes SMS Scharnhorst y SMS Gneisenau se les unió en la Isla de Pascua el Leipzig, que navegaba desde la costa mexicana y el Dresden que procedía del Atlántico Sur. El 19 de octubre Von Spee dio la orden de partir e hicieron escala en las isla de Más a tierra, actual isla Robinson Crusoe, en el Archipiélago Juan Fernández. El 30 de octubre llegó a Valparaíso
Asimismo, el 14 de octubre de 1914, el contralmirante Cradock se hallaba con su flota, anclada en las islas Malvinas, cuando recibió la orden de interceptar y destruir la escuadra alemana que venía por el Pacífico. Cradock zarpó de Puerto Stanley el 22 de octubre y se dirigió con su escuadra hacia el Pacífico vía Cabo de Hornos, sin el veterano HMS Canopus, un viejo acorazado pre-dreadnought. Cradock pidió reiteradamente refuerzos al Jefe de Estado Mayor, Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee, ya que su escuadra no estaba a la par con la alemana, pero su petición fue rechazada recibiendo por respuesta: «Con lo que tiene es suficiente».
Cradock había enviado al crucero Glasgow a aprovisionarse nuevamente de carbón en Coronel y a enviar telegramas al Almirantazgo: de ello tuvo conocimiento Von Spee, quien se dirigió con sus navíos a ese puerto. El Glasgow sirvió involuntariamente de cebo, mientras Cradock buscaba al crucero alemán Leipzig, el cual radiaba insistentemente mensajes

El 12 de octubre de 1914, a los cruceros alemanes SMS Scharnhorst y SMS Gneisenau se les unió en la Isla de Pascua el Leipzig, que navegaba desde la costa mexicana y el Dresden que procedía del Atlántico Sur. El 19 de octubre Von Spee dio la orden de partir e hicieron escala en las isla de Más a tierra, actual isla Robinson Crusoe, en el Archipiélago Juan Fernández. El 30 de octubre llegó a Valparaíso
Asimismo, el 14 de octubre de 1914, el contralmirante Cradock se hallaba con su flota, anclada en las islas Malvinas, cuando recibió la orden de interceptar y destruir la escuadra alemana que venía por el Pacífico. Cradock zarpó de Puerto Stanley el 22 de octubre y se dirigió con su escuadra hacia el Pacífico vía Cabo de Hornos, sin el veterano HMS Canopus, un viejo acorazado pre-dreadnought. Cradock pidió reiteradamente refuerzos al Jefe de Estado Mayor, Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee, ya que su escuadra no estaba a la par con la alemana, pero su petición fue rechazada recibiendo por respuesta: «Con lo que tiene es suficiente».
Cradock había enviado al crucero Glasgow a aprovisionarse nuevamente de carbón en Coronel y a enviar telegramas al Almirantazgo: de ello tuvo conocimiento Von Spee, quien se dirigió con sus navíos a ese puerto. El Glasgow sirvió involuntariamente de cebo, mientras Cradock buscaba al crucero alemán Leipzig, el cual radiaba insistentemente mensajes
