With a 5.7 liter V8 and "Ultramatic" transmission, this 1955 Packard is a rarity for sure. It takes you back to a time before the BMW 3 Series set a precedent that luxury had to mean performance. While the Patrician is far from perfect, it's a great piece of history, and the ride really is sublime.

Rolls-Royce developed the legendary Merlin engine that held land, aviation and water speed records. It was unmatched but the Rolls factories were threatened during WWII and the company needed a partner in a safe country that could produce the engines as well. They also had to be able to produce them up to Rolls-Royce standards. Packard was the one.
Packard built Merlin engines for the Lancaster bombers, P-51 Mutangs and other airplanes during WWII in its Detroit Factory with American workers who served on the home front by transforming the auto factories into the Arsenal of Democracy. Many credit the industrial might of this country with winning the War.
These engines won the Battle of Britain and took the fight far into Germany. Other Packard engines were enlisted to power PT Boats.

Packard films are hard to find. In the Gone Autos Collection, I currently have only three TV commercials. And here's one of them.
This spot promotes three important Packard convenience features: power steering, Ultramatic Drive, and power brakes.
The Ultramatic shot is interesting, because you get a quick look at a hill at the Packard Proving Grounds in Shelby Township, Michigan.

Packard was an American luxury-type automobile marque built by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, and later by the Studebaker-Packard Corporation of South Bend, Indiana. The first Packard automobiles were produced in 1899, and the last in 1958.
Packard was founded by James Ward Packard (Lehigh University Class of 1884), his brother William Doud Packard and their partner, George Lewis Weiss, in the city of Warren, Ohio. James Ward Packard believed that they could build a better horseless carriage than the Winton cars owned by Weiss (an important Winton stockholder) and, being himself a mechanical engineer, had some ideas for improvement on the designs of current automobiles.
In September, 1900, the Ohio Automobile Company was founded as the manufacturer, while the cars were always sold as Packards. Since these automobiles quickly gained an excellent reputation, and there were more automobile makers that produced — or at least planned to — under the label "Ohio", the name was changed soon: On October 13, 1902, it became the Packard Motor Car Company.

James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno /ˈlɛnoʊ/ (born April 28, 1950) is an American stand-up comedian and television host.
From 1992 to 2009, Leno was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time, UTC-5), also on NBC. After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010.
James "Jay" Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1950. His mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), a homemaker, was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. Leno's father, Angelo (1910–1994), who worked as an insurance salesman, was born in New York to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and although his high school guidance counselor recommended that he drop out of school, he later obtained a Bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. Leno's siblings include his late older brother, Patrick, who was a Vietnam veteran and a lawyer.

Rolls-Royce developed the legendary Merlin engine that held land, aviation and water speed records. It was unmatched but the Rolls factories were threatened during WWII and the company needed a partner in a safe country that could produce the engines as well. They also had to be able to produce them up to Rolls-Royce standards. Packard was the one. Packard built Merlin engines for the Lancaster bombers, P-51 Mutangs and other airplanes during WWII in its Detroit Factory with American workers who served on the home front by transforming the auto factories into the Arsenal of Democracy. Many credit the industrial might of this country with winning the War. These engines won the Battle of Britain and took the fight far into Germany.
