Deep Ecology | A New Future For Nature | George Monbiot
Every day, in newspapers and on television, we read and hear about the ongoing destruction of the environment: the greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion, deforestation, and air and water pollution. Deep Ecology offers a solution to the environmental crisis through a radical shift in human consciousness—a fundamental change in the way people relate with the environment. Instead of thinking of na

From Ecocriticism to Deep Ecology
Geoff Berry, of White Fella Dreaming, describes the shift from being an ecocritic to becoming a deep ecologist. The key to this shift is around the lives we lead; being true to Deep Ecology means taking action, as well as accepting an idea, and hence using philosophy as the medicine with which we constantly remake ourselves as 'sacred animals.' While ecocriticism gives us great tools to deconstruc

Synopsis: On 1500 metres above sea level, on the slope of the mountain Hallingskarvet, stands "Tvergastein', the cabin of Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess. In his life he has spent nearly 12 years in this hut, where he wrote several books and essays on philosophy and ecology. In this film, Naess tells about the concept of 'deep ecology', which was first introduced by him in 1973. One of the basic tenets of deep ecology is that nature has a value in itself, apart from its possible use value to humans. Next to being a famous mountaineer, Naess has been a longtime activist in the environmental movement.
He gives an inspiring account of his participation in blockades to prevent the Alta river in northern Norway (the area of the Sami, an indigenous people) from being dammed.
With contributions by Helena Norberg-Hodge, Vandana Shiva, Bill Devall, George Sessions and Harold Glasser.

Arne Næss (27 January 1912 – 12 January 2009) was a Norwegian philosopher who coined the term deep ecology and was an important intellectual and inspirational figure within the environmental movement of the late twentieth century.
In 1939, Næss was the youngest person to be appointed full professor at the University of Oslo and the only professor of philosophy in the country at the time.
He was a noted mountaineer, who in 1950 led the expedition that made the first ascent of Tirich Mir(7,708 m).
The Tvergastein hut in the Hallingskarvet massif played an important role in Ecosophy T, as "T" is said to represent his mountain hut Tvergastein.

Geoff Berry, of White Fella Dreaming, describes the shift from being an ecocritic to becoming a deep ecologist. The key to this shift is around the lives we lead; being true to Deep Ecology means taking action, as well as accepting an idea, and hence using philosophy as the medicine with which we constantly remake ourselves as 'sacred animals.' While ecocriticism gives us great tools to deconstruct and decolonise our minds, it still leaves us outside our own stories according to Berry. As an example, an ecocritic analyses literature and film from ancient to modern, religious to scientific, to examine what it says about human relations with the rest of nature - while Deep Ecology asks us to take up the challenge of living as if we really were loyal to all aspects of nature.
Berry believes that by taking Deep Ecology seriously, we can regain access to wisdom traditions and experiences that enable us to live in accord with a higher, deeper, greater version of ourselves, which is always waiting to be birthed into life. This involves us in having our own practices as well as learning as much as we can from indigenous epistemologies and the ways of nature mysticism.

In this absorbing, and sometimes thrilling memoir, well-known eco-philosopher, Buddhist scholar, and deep ecology activist /teacher Joanna Macy recounts her adventures of mind and spirit in the key social movements of our era. Macy's autobiography reads like a novel as she relates her multi-faceted life experiences and reflects on how her marriage and family life enriched her service to the world. Macy's formative years with an abusive father and oppressed mother set her on an irrevocable path of self-definition and independence. A short-lived stint with the CIA exposed Macy first hand to the Cold War's darkest threats: the construction of the hydrogen bomb and the building of the Berlin Wall. With three children in tow, Macy and her husband traveled with the Peace Corps to Africa, India, and Tibet, where her encounter with the Dalai Lama and Buddhism led to Macy's life-long embrace of the religion and a deep commitment to the peace and environmental movements. In Widening Circles, the unique synthesis of spiritualism and activism that define Macy's contribution to the world are illuminated by the life-events and experiences that have paved her uncommon path. Widening Circles has been made available through New Catalyst Books. New Catalyst Books is an imprint of New Society Publishers, aimed at providing readers with access to a wider range of books dealing with sustainability issues by bringing books back into print that have enduring value in the field. How are deep incarnation and Divine immanence related?
Deane-Drummond aims to clarify this relationship and to argue for a grounded understanding of Christology that takes its cues from an expansive interpretation of theodrama, where the central act is the life, death and resurrection of Christ. In her view, other creatures are not simply the stage for human dramatic action, but join in the drama from the beginning of the creation of the world, thus offering a theological basis for valuation of other creaturely kinds.

Mardalsfossen is one of the ten highest waterfalls in Europe. It is located in the municipality of Nesset in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The falls are on the Mardøla river which flows into the lake Eikesdalsvatnet, about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) northwest of the village of Eikesdalen. The waterfall is depicted in Nesset's coat-of-arms.
The total fall is 705 metres according to SSB, 657 metres according to World Waterfall Database. It consists of two large drops and several smaller ones lower down. The highest vertical drop, which is 358 metres, is one of the tallest in Norway. It is on average 24 metres wide. It is a tiered waterfall. (Note: cannot find the translation for "tiered".)
*The water, which has been tapped for hydroelectric use, flows over the falls during the summer tourist season of 20 June to 20 August. At other times the water is channeled through the hydroelectric scheme. The highest rate of flow ever recorded in the falls is 45 cubic metres per second. Currently in the summers, the flow limited to less than 3 cubic metres per second.*

_Due to the immense success of the project, the exhibition has been extended to 20th August 2015._ The show is curated by Be Andr and is sponsored by Nesset Municipality, Nesset Sparebank, Nesset Kraft AS, Kverneland Bil and Galleri Opdahl. Accompanying the installation is a limited edition book which includes a foreword by Marit Wadsten focussing on the Mardøla campaign of 1970 and the development of resources in Eikesdal; an essay by Eckhard Schneider, director of the Pinchuk Art Center, Kiev, which explores the artist’s practice; and finally a conversation between Antony Gormley and the project's curator Be Andr.

Based on your reading of Part V of the textbook, how would you defineSpiritual Deep Ecology? How does this perspective affect our utilization of nature? In your opinion, what influence does this perspective have on contemporary environmental debates? Can individuals in capitalist societies still be deep ecologists?

Here's a sneak preview of David Rastrick's new live recording,
'Community’ – a ‘Jazz Reggae’ snapshot of ‘Deep Ecology’.
'Community' is the first track from David Rastrick's new live recording: 'RastaJazz - A Jazz Reggae Journey'. ‘RastaJazz – A Jazz Reggae Journey’ asks the question: “What is Jazz Reggae?” and sets about answering this question by merging musical characteristics of jazz and reggae styles.
The song – which was recorded entirely live in the studio - features vocal harmonies, a full brass section of trumpet, baritone sax’ and trombone, and a classic rhythm section of guitar, keyboard, bass and drum-kit. The musicians are mostly based in the Cape-to-Cape region of South West Australia, and are:
David Rastrick - Trumpet/Vocals
Michelle Spriggs - Vocals
Mike Wiese - Baritone Saxophone
Kevin Jones - Trombone
Marty Rotolo - Guitar
Sean Lillico - Piano
Kevin McDonald - Bass
Gary Larkin - Drum-kit
Lyrically, the song is a ‘snapshot’ of ‘deep ecology’, expounding succinctly upon value and interconnectedness of all beings.
Musically, ‘Community’ merges a ‘roots reggae riddem’ with ‘modal ‘, ‘minor blues’ and ‘contemporary jazz’ chord progressions over a modified classic contemporary structure which merges into a jazz ‘minor blues’ structure for the instrumentals.
‘Community’ was recorded live by Sean Lillico at Fur Real Studio's, Yallingup, West Australia, on Saturday 16th of May 2015. This un-mastered mix was the ultimate ‘take’ and the video features footage from this final ‘take’ and the previous ‘takes’. Filming was by Mira Clohessy, and editing by David Rastrick.

Deep Jungle reveals how technology is changing the nature of jungle exploration, providing scientists with the means to unlock secrets that enlarge our understanding of rain forests and the role that they play in planetary ecology. Filmed in the rain forests of Borneo, Peru, Cambodia, the Central African Republic, and elsewhere, this program follows researchers as they climb nearly 200-foot-high jungle canopies, confront unknown species, unravel mysteries of animal behavior, and explore hidden archaeological sites that harbor clues about lost civilizations.
Monsters of the Forest
If a nutshell is too hard to be cracked, how can it be indispensable to the existence of untold numbers of living things? That's one of the mysteries of rain forest ecology tackled in this second episode. It also shows that much of the rainfall in a rain forest is generated in part by the trees themselves, illustrating that even animals that live in rivers or flooded areas miles away from the rain forest depend on it.

“We can see from [the natural world], as though in a mirror, how perfection stems from variety in heaven as well, since things that happen in the natural world offer us a reflection of things in the spiritual world.” -Heaven and Hell 56
"These trees were laid out in a long curving row that extended and came around to form the arcing arm of a grand spiral. It was a perfect spiral of trees, in which one species followed another according to the relative excellence of its kind of fruit…The trees toward the center were the most excellent of all. They were covered in rich, sumptuous fruit. Called paradise trees, they were unlike anything that has ever been or could ever be witnessed on earth or anywhere in the physical universe...here and there along this long, spiraling line of trees there were living benches that had been crafted by bending and weaving together the branches of the tree just behind them; these were decorated with an abundance of the tree's fruits. Along the continuous arcing line of trees there were openings that led into flower gardens, and these led to lawns that were divided into grassy areas and flower beds." -True Christianity 741
"In a word, absolutely everything in nature, from the smallest to the greatest, is a correspondence. The reason correspondences occur is that the natural world, including everything in it, arises and is sustained from the spiritual world, and both worlds come from the Divine." -Heaven and Hell 106
