La Soufrière (volcano)
La Soufrière (Vincentian Creole: Soufray) ("The Sulfurer") or Soufrière Saint Vincent is an active volcano on the island of Saint Vincent in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. Many volcanoes in the Caribbean are named Soufrière (French: "sulphur outlet"). These include Soufrière Hills on Montserrat and La Grande Soufrière on Guadeloupe, the subject of Werner Herzog's 1977 film La Soufrière.
Geography and structure
At 1,234 m (4,049 ft), La Soufrière is the highest peak on Saint Vincent as well as the highest point in the island country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Soufrière is a stratovolcano with a crater lake and is the island's youngest and northernmost volcano.
Eruptive history
La Soufrière violently erupted in 1718, 1812, 1902, 1971, and 1979. The eruption of 7 May 1902, just hours before the eruption of Mount Pelée on Martinique, killed 1,680 people. The death zone, where almost all persons were killed, was close to entirely Carib. This last large remnant of Carib culture was destroyed, the island of Dominica's Carib Territory being much smaller in comparison at that time.

An "explosive" volcanic eruption has blanketed the Caribbean island of St Vincent in ash and smoke and forced thousands of people out of their homes.
La Soufrière, which has been dormant for decades, first started showing volcanic activity in December, but that increased this week.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves urged more than 16,000 residents in "red zones" to evacuate.
The volcano has since spewed dark ash plumes 6 km (3.7 miles) into the air.

After decades of inactivity, La Soufriere volcano first erupted on Friday and continued erupting for five days now, spewing dark clouds of ash some 10 km (6 miles) into the air and prompting an evacuation of residents living nearby.
Satellite imagery shot before and after the volcano eruption on St. Vincent showed ash covering the nearby communities, that destroyed crops, contaminated water and devastated infrastructure.
Meteorologist Ross Hull discusses the impact of the volcano as satellite images show. Officials have warned it could continue to be active for months.

The Caribbean island of St Vincent has been rocked by a huge explosion, as the La Soufriere volcano fired a huge plume of ash and hot gas into the skies. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Officials said it was "destroying everything in its path", amid fears for the safety of some residents who have refused to obey orders to evacuate.
The series of volcanic explosions over the last few days have disrupted food and fresh water supplies, wiping out forests and farmland. From St Vincent, Kenton Chance reports.
