Because heaven forbid if children are exposed to evil and sin beyond the depths of our control. Of course, there is some practicality in censorship, as you don’t want children to be exposed to things that they aren’t ready to see and cannot understand. But, sometimes there are political motives behind censorship and it can reach ridiculous measures. In 1915, the Supreme Court in the United States ruled that movies were not exempt from the First Amendment and that they couldn’t show anything that would make people sway their preference to those who were sinful and immoral. So pretty much what that meant was, don’t make anything that will make people want to root for the bad guys. Sometimes censorship standards just got plain ridiculous, such as the topic of animal nudity. When Disney first introduced the character of Flossie the cow, she adorned only a cowbell and walked on all fours. Seems perfectly innocent right? Well, the FCC didn’t think so, and put strict rules on Disney. So, Flossie’s next appearance required her to walk on two legs and wear a full length dress. Because, you know, children can be corrupted from seeing a naked cow on their televisions. Let’s hope that the censors then proceeded to clothe all cows around the country, lest we get corrupted by animals in their natural state. But of course, we can’t talk about censorship without the 2004 Janet Jackson Super Bowl incident when the singer’s right breast accidentally popped out. The FCC went into overdrive of censoring anything that showed extra skin. The extent that they went to aggravated viewers to the point where they filed complaints, and the FCC became the butt of several jokes for the next few years. Comedians have been often plagued with censorship standards, and often found themselves unable to properly do their standup acts out of fear for being arrested for saying too many obscene or inappropriate words. Beloved comedian George Carlin was arrested after criticizing the FCC. The charges were eventually dropped. Lenny Bruce was also arrested for using the word, “Cocksucker” in his standup show, and would be arrested a few more times in his career. Sometimes censorship came out of fear. For example, the United Kingdom was fearful of an inevitable uprising of ninjas taking over the country. So when the cartoon of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” came out, the “Ninja” part was omitted and replaced with “Hero.” Because apparently watching fictional ninja turtles was going to contribute to the up rise of ninjas by corrupting and converting the British children. Finally, censorship was heavy in the classic film, “A Streetcar Named Desire” and had to be edited so that the characters didn’t come across as lustful. The original cut was considered to be immoral, sinful, and vulgar. Supposedly the reason behind the edits was to make the characters more relatable.
