Specific impulse (usually abbreviated Isp) is a measure of the efficiency of rocket and jet engines. By definition, it is the total impulse (or change in momentum) delivered per unit of propellant consumed, and is dimensionally equivalent to the thrust generated divided by the propellant flow rate. If mass (kilogram or slug) is used as the unit of propellant, then specific impulse has units of velocity. If weight (newton or pound) is used instead, then specific impulse has units of time (seconds). Multiplying by the gravitational constant (g0) converts it from the weight basis to the mass basis.
A propulsion method and system with a higher specific impulse uses the mass or weight of the propellant more efficiently in creating forward thrust, and in the case of a rocket, the less propellant needed for a given delta-v, per the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation. In rockets, this does necessarily mean the engine is more efficient at gaining altitude, distance, or velocity. This is because if an engine burns the propellant faster, the rocket has less weight for a longer period of time, which makes better use of the total force times time that was acquired from the propellant. This is much less of a consideration in jet engines that employ wings and outside air for combustion to carry payloads that are much heavier than the propellant.
I tell you all about rocket impulse and explain specific impulse.
I get asked why specific impulse is measured in seconds, and why many of the equations using the value have a factor of 'g' in them - the factor is used as a conversion so that engineers working in different units can all correctly agree on the value of specific impulse.
Tutorial on types of rocket fuels, solid vs liquid, specific impulse, and proper units of measure of physical quantities. Roughly parallels the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Aerospace Education Module 4. See www.midnighttutor.com for a larger format video.
Specific Impulse is a measure of the efficiency of jet and rocket engines. So why does it have units of seconds? I show you where specific impulse comes from, what it means and why it has such funny units. I also give some rough values for different kinds of engines.
To get a better understanding of the rocket performance I conducted some experiments to figure out how to convert the specific impulse displayed on the parts into a specific impulse I can use with the Rocket Equation.
This video was created as a part of my high school senior year project in May 2012 with an accompanying lab report and a paper on different rocket propulsion methods. I will think about uploading the documents onto Google Drive if requested. The experiment was meant to be a proof of concept, and not necessarily for accuracy. Please let me know if there are any errors, thanks. The music in this video is Strobe by Deadmau5, and I do not claim to own it.

The "Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket" is an electromagnetic thruster for spacecraft propulsion. It uses radio waves to ionize and heat a propellant, and magnetic fields to accelerate the resulting plasma to generate thrust. It is one of several types of spacecraft electric propulsion systems. The method of heating plasma used in VASIMR was originally developed as a result of research into nuclear fusion. VASIMR is intended to bridge the gap between high-thrust, low-specific impulse propulsion systems and low-thrust, high-specific impulse systems. VASIMR is capable of functioning in either mode. Costa Rican–born American scientist and former NASA astronaut Franklin Chang Díaz created the VASIMR concept and has been working on its development since 1977. VASIMRs units...
The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR®) represents the future of translunar and interplanetary transportation as well as propulsion within Earth orbit. Its superb efficiency compared to that of a conventional chemical rocket allows double the payload mass for lunar delivery and half the transit time to Mars. Its robust design allows much greater power levels than existing electric propulsion systems and promises longer lifetimes.
This is a montage made before Specific Impulse was made, it isn't very good, but meh, it looks cool.

It is apparent that chemical rocketry and propulsion systems clearly lack efficiency and the power needed to get to fast enough speeds. Project Orion was a study of a spacecraft intended to be directly propelled by a series of explosions of atomic bombs behind the craft (nuclear pulse propulsion). Early versions of this vehicle were proposed to take off from the ground with significant associated nuclear fallout; later versions were presented for use only in space. A 1955 Los Alamos Laboratory document states (without offering references) that general proposals were first made by Stanislaw Ulam in 1946, and that preliminary calculations were made by F. Reines and Ulam in a Los Alamos memorandum dated 1947. The actual project, initiated in 1958, was led by Ted Taylor at General Atomics and physicist Freeman Dyson, who at Taylor's request took a year away from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, US to work on the...

Since the 1970s, starting at MIT and then for 25 years at NASA, astronaut Franklin Chang Díaz and his team of scientists have worked to develop a faster propulsion technology for space travel. The result is the VASIMR engine, a plasma rocket that can travel 10 times faster than a chemical rocket, uses 1/10th the amount of fuel, and can transport cargo more economically than any existing space technology.
